Charles6682 -> Conservatives win majority in Canada (5/3/2011 6:01:11 PM)

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper, was able to convince Canadians on Monday to vote for a Conservative majority. What does this mean for Canada? What does this mean for the U.S.A.?After all,the U.S.A and Canada are the worlds 2 largest trading partners.Stephen Harper is the man in charge in Canada. Is this good or bad for America? What does Stephen Harpers huge victory in Canada mean for the rest of the world?History was just made in Canada.

Charles6682 -> RE: Conservatives win majority in Canada (5/3/2011 6:06:35 PM)

Interesting, the Liberal party lost big time. The "New Democrats" seem to won second place, which seems to be a big deal in Canada. What happened to the Liberals?I guess they weren't liberal enough, its seems.

Maybe the Canadian libs were too busy worrying about United States domestic issues to realize they needed to go vote on their own?

That multiple party business can really mix things up.Understanding it isn`t easy for the simple minded.

Don`t mind rich,he`s used to our two party system here and can`t count past two anyway...[:D]

It means the end of days in Canada. Harper has already closed multiple national museums and art schools.
Water, timber, electricity and minerals will be privatized and sold to the highest bidder.
The only bad news for America is that it will be the Chinese.

Lucylastic -> RE: Conservatives win majority in Canada (5/3/2011 6:28:17 PM)

Oh I am an unhappy camper believe me Tantriqu.

I fear becoming unemployed shortly [:@] or having my job trucked down to Indianapolis or Virginia[:'(], along with our potash and softwood lumber[:o].
All we get in return from down south is the emerald ashborer beetle and malaria[X(].
Good thing I got that spammail saying I could make $1200 for 2 days 'work' per week as a prodomme . . . [8|]

Arpig -> RE: Conservatives win majority in Canada (5/3/2011 8:16:00 PM)

We've had Conservative majorities before and survived them intact.
What does it mean for Canada, some steps backward over the next 4 years, then we'll kick the bums out and move forward again.
What does it mean for the US? Not to much different really, I expect the soft wood squabble will continue and other than that it will probably be business as usual, though there will be a serious effort by Harper to deregulate many sectors in Canada, so depending on where he succeeds it could make a big difference.

And you're right about history being made, but not in the way youthink. The historical aspect is that the NDP is now the Opposition, and has established a major power base in Quebec. A national party with a strong base in Quebec is in a serious position to make a run at being the Gvt. If the NDP can hold onto the affections of the people of Quebec through this Parliament, then they are in a good position to form a Gvt.

I thought the USA was being good to Canada?!I notice the leader of the Liberal Party lived in America before.Do Canadians dislike America so much that they voted the Liberals out, just for that?!
Here I thought everyone around the world just loved the USA![8|]

tj444 -> RE: Conservatives win majority in Canada (5/3/2011 8:28:02 PM)

With a majority now, Harpers hands arent tied anymore. In the US, to get laws passed, the politicians have to trade favors and you scratch my back i scratch yours so when that happens, good ideas get watered down and everything gets so convoluted that it all becomes almost unworkable. For Obama to implement the health plan it ended up being what, 1000 pages long??? Does anyone understand it after all the politicians have added and deleted and sliced and diced?

Even tho Harper has had a minority govt for 5 years, Canada's economy is the envy of many countries, and imo he deserves credit for that. Sure there are people that will disagree with me but even in the best economy there will be people that still bitch and want more. But comparing the Canadian economy with the US or various other countries that have had to go begging for $ from the IMF, Canada is doing pretty good, imo.

I dont see much if anything changing as far as the US or the rest of the world goes, Harper has been Prime Minister for 5 years, he has been meeting leaders of other countries all along. Why would anything change?

I also dont see this as history being made. Its not like there havent been elections in Canada for some time now. [8|]

Of course this is all my opinion and I dont speak for anyone else.
