Long pig: a translation of a term formerly used in some Pacific islands for human flesh as food.

In vitro meat

In vitro meat, also known as cultured meat, is an animal flesh product that has never been part of a complete, living animal. Several current research projects are growing in vitro meat experimentally, although no meat has yet been produced for public consumption

...

In vitro meat should not be confused with imitation meat, which is a vegetarian food product produced from vegetable protein, usually from soy or gluten. The terms "synthetic meat" and "artificial meat" may refer to either. In vitro meat has also been described, somewhat derisively, as "laboratory-grown" meat.

Most meat is animal muscle. The process of developing in vitro meat involves taking muscle cells and applying a protein that helps the cells to grow into large portions of meat. Once the initial cells have been obtained, additional animals would not be needed – akin to the production of yogurt cultures.

...

On April 21, 2008, PETA announced a $1 million X-Prize style reward for the first group to successfully produce synthetic meat that is comparable to and commercially viable against naturally sourced meat products.

There are lots of other resources about in vitro meat production on the web, just Google it.

These two concepts brings up all kinds of ethical, moral, taste and sensibility issues.

If we can successfully culture different animals muscles for steaks, fish fillets, lamb chops, etc ... and this is seen as ethical and moral, and done without killing or hurting animals ... why couldn't we do the same for human muscle?

"Pork" loin could have a 'hole 'nother meaning.

Would this be "right" or "wrong"?

If it can be done, it will be done.  Are there any moral issues if someone cultures their own muscle tissue ... and then cooks up a "self steak"?  Or serves it to their friends (with permission)?

What about selling it in the supermarket?

Would you eat "long pork" grown this way?  Would you condemn others that did?  Why or why not?

Just musing ....

Would you like some thighs with that?

Thankfully, at least in my case, I'm glad this thread came along post-dinner.
All I can think of in this scenario is "But what if it's from someone I don't like?"

.....ewwww

I've started a "Let's Talk About" trend.

That is no surprise, as I am the most charismatic forum poster in the history of forum posting.  A sort of, living legend, if you will!

You don't understand… I've seen it. I've seen it happening. The ocean is dying, the plankton is dying… It's people! In Vitro Meat is made out of people. They're making our food out of people. Soon, they'll be breeding us like cattle—for food! You gotta tell 'em! Listen to me, Hatcher! You gotta tell 'em—IN VITRO MEAT IS PEOPLE! We gotta stop them! Somehow! Listen! Listen to me… PLEASE!!!

Of course there would be a market for the new book, "How to Serve Man."

You, NS, have a severe case of Mephoria.
I think Mr Spider may be very interested in your Long Pig.

There's room for a lot of funny comments, poise.  You've got the first two!

This came up at dinner conversation tonight, while eating steak at "Outback".

Sometimes we have interesting dinner conversations.  Sometimes Treasure doesn't like the subject matter.

Nah uh! You got the first one, with that Pork Loin comment.
I'm a very picky eater as it is now, and I really didn't want to think
too much on this topic. I hope you don't mind the humor.

Ehhh..Bon Appetit and all that!

No problem.  I figured humor is a good way to talk about it, although I will be disappointed if there is no serious discussion.

Some interesting concepts ....

"I'm a breast man ..." might get a new meaning ... and how would you order your portions?

Some women who believe in "cock worship" might have the opportunity to get a better "taste" of the subject ...

"Mountain oysters" are considered a delicacy in some quarters.  What would the be a name for this newly grown dish?

Imagine my horror as the waitress walked up on the conversation.  Worse yet, the elderly couple at the next table getting an earful.

I'll take my man rare and very juicy, please.

I'm not fussed about ethical issues, but eating human meat is really quite bad for you. I looked this up a while ago because I'd really like to try it one day (If I ever have to have a limb amputated I'm definitely nomming it). Apparently it'll make you really ill if you have too much (I forget why though), so it wouldn't make a very good food source for anything other than a novelty.

I wonder how one would qualify as prime on the meat grading scale.

My first answer, although with a bit of humor, was serious.
I have a hard time even thinking of eating some things that people eat everyday.
I wouldn't look down upon anyone who chooses this off the menu though.

I think there would be a market:

'Human Flesh Tastes Like Pork'

Armin Meiwes, the German cannibal serving a life sentence for killing and eating a man who begged to be devoured, has described how the meat tasted of pork and how he prepared an elaborate meal of human steak in a green pepper sauce with croquettes and Brussels sprouts.

...

Police estimate that around 10,000 people in Germany alone share Meiwes' fascination with cannibalism -- either eating human flesh or being eaten.

Anthropophagy is really only bad for you if you eat the brain. As it has been pointed out with other animals the manner in which "things" are cooked is what is important. What I would want to know is if they would be enineering the human meat to be more palatable.

Although I would not have a qualm about eating human flesh if that is what I had to do to survive, it's not something I would go out of my way to do. I just don't see it as the big taboo others do.

I would be a vegetarian before I would make cultured meat a part of my diet. As it is, I go out of my way to eat the most natural (hormone/additive free) meat, chicken and fish as possible, along with every other organic food I can get my hands on.

I go with the old adage, "you are what you eat." There just is no telling what cultured meat will do to you in a few years time or in the next generation, or generations after.

Geeze, there are times I do despair and think the smarter we are, the stupider we get.

Firm,

For a serious answer I would have to know WHY it is abhorrent to eat people. I know that it IS. I am not sure of the WHY though. I shared this topic with the other half and his response was the same. "It just is."

After all, the danger from it, disease transmission, can be dealt with by throughly cooking it. We donate organs from people who die. Why not donate the leg of Joe to a starving family? We just do not do it. But WHY do we not do it?

Once I figure that out, then I can give you an answer on how I would feel about eating In Vitro Human Meat.

Unless it is a disease caused by prions. That would be why eating the brain is a no-no.

Aylee- "I would have to know WHY it is abhorrent to eat people"

It is because man is an ego based animal that thinks he is better then the rest of the critters crawling around on this ball of dirt.

edit- because I screwed up Aylee's quote.
