I'm of 2 minds on this.

One is he could show a lot of unity with the guy that finished the job he started and presumably worked hard on but decided not to.

Two, he is letting Obama have his "moment"

Bush still has the right in this country to choose not to be there. His reasons are none of your business, unless he is willing to share them. My speculation is that Mr Obama's reasons are more political than spritual, and that is his right, as it is mine to think that.

RE-  bush.   We paid him- he punched his time clock, now he is gone.

How many of us would be asked to go to an old job site?         Bush is no longer our employee.

He is showing class by not taking any attention away from Obama and his accomplishment of getting Bin Laden. This is the kind of petty bullshit that gums up the issues. I wasn't a Bush supporter and I certainly wasn't a supporter of the Iraq war. But, let's concentrate on what's important and we'll have more credibility.

Bush can't take credit away from Obama, he canceled the hunt and disbanded the unit.  Bush gave bin Laden a free pass in 2005 . . .  which is when that house was built.

Have you seen what the news is doing to Bush?  Hell, MSNBC has an anti republican and anti Bush campaign running. They show clips of Clinton, Obama and Bush saying bin Laden is the #1 biggest terrorist threat.  Then cut to to a reporter asking Bush if he found bin laden.  Bush says bin Laden doesn't seem like the head of anything much and that he doesn't think about him anymore.  This followed by Obama issuing a renewed hunt and the sound bite where OBL was found and killed.

They are taking back to back clips of republicans making fearful predictions and a clip that refutes it as bullshit.  It's a mess out there for republicans right now.  I wouldn't want to show my face either.

I think he was right to decline.  This moment isn't about him.  I think Obama was right to invite him, but i think Bush was right to decline.  I don't know who Obama invited but if he wants to make this a political move, why not invite the senate as a whole?  Show they can be united over something.

He should be there. We always do these things with past presidents--despite the high cynicism displayed here.

I also understand why he might reasonably decline.

How is it cynical to ?? invite a murderer?   Over 4000 of our soliders died because 1 man killed 3000, not to mention the  1,000,000,000  Iraqis.

Not cynical.

Sorry-  but I am sick of Bush....  and Obama is wearing thin on me too. Tho Obama should go.

Well he was POTUS when the event happened. And he was there within days for the photo-op with the hero fire-fighters.And he did exploit the attacks for his own personal agenda.

At the very least he could do is show up for the not so photo-opy events and show his respects.

But I guess after all, bush avoiding the event will symbolize his whole administration.

Absent.

It would be unwise so close to the elections for the two to be photo oped in that place.

The bylines and breaking news would be all about the abject failure of Bush and the republicans vs the many triumphs of Obama and the democrats. Probably in a split-screen, with smoke and mirrors behind Bush and a shining sun and clear sky behind Obama....

He's done enough for his party without giving them that.
