FelineFae -> By any other name... (5/7/2011 8:26:42 PM)

Do you like your given name ?
i don't care for our culture's method of naming people.
i'd much rather have a name that suited who i am, that all people had names that fit them,
rather than something auditorily pleasant to their parents .

littlewonder -> RE: By any other name... (5/7/2011 8:54:15 PM)

I used to hate my name when I was growing up.
I've grown into it though and don't mind it so much anymore
except when someone decides to use the two shortened versions of it
One makes me sound like a little girl and the other makes me sound like a dude.

I think my name pretty much fits me though so I can't really think of any other name I would choose except maybe one other...Michelle but everyone already calls me that because it's close to my name and when they can't remember my name that's the name they do remember. My mom was gonna name me that anyway lol.

Shoot me a message.  I prefer most people to know me by the more ominous nickname here. =)

sunshinemiss -> RE: By any other name... (5/8/2011 4:03:47 AM)

I have come to appreciate western names - here in Korea everyone has the same name. You can't turn around without running into a Park, Lee or Kim. There is a joke about ants and Kims but I can't remember it. Also, all the first and second names are basically the same - hyung, hyun, kyun, kyung, kwang, kwan, jong, jung, jeong, jeon, chung, chong, see, oh, un, na, ri, rim, lim, ye, he, hwa, hwang, and we are back to the beginning. They are all one syllable and I have too many students with the same or nearly the same name. I actually HAVE TO go by their student numbers. That kind of breaks my heart a little bit.

I love my name - it is a wonderfully beautiful, feminine name. I have a Korean name that is the same meaning (and yes, it fits with the ... "there are only 20 names in Korean" thing). I have a name stamp (that's how they do legal docs here)... and it is written in Chinese. I love using it. It's beautiful, and always surprises the Koreans when I pull it out of its little leather bag.

When I was younger, I considered changing my last name (from my adoptive mother who died soon after the adoption, and the name really wasn't anybody's - it was her ex-husband's family name). I went about getting the paperwork and such for the legal change when I had a realization - it didn't matter whose name it was besides me. It was MY name. And it is a beautiful name.

best,
sunshine,
(whose name means more or less - sweet, darling rose)

My real first name actually has two meanings:

Megan: Old Norse and Celtic. In the first, it means Power or Luck. In the second it means Mighty One

Last Name:
Whiteley: English. Dweller By The White Clearing.

So I am the mighty one who dwells by the white clearing.

Charnegui -> RE: By any other name... (5/8/2011 4:41:50 AM)

My names are Italian... With the habit of the Dutch to shorten every name whenever you come into the *care so much* circle, I used to hate what my Gran made of it. Therefore I hated my complete name and the fact that my parents were about 8 years ahead with what became "the most popular" at the beginning of the 70's. So it wasn't so out of the ordinary anymore.
But even then I was never called by my full name, exept for when people were mad at me, then my name was fully outspoken.

Nowadays I only use just the first part of my name, and it is suiting me, meaning Peace.....

And I love reading the stories

Always loved that name, in fact I reserved it back in the days should I ever have a daughter....Her full name would be Caitlinn Erin Megan.

DesFIP -> RE: By any other name... (5/8/2011 5:50:31 AM)

How can you know before you know the person what kind of name would suit them? Plus the name that suits a cute two year old might not suit who that person is 30 years later. Unless we renamed ourselves every few years, which would be confusing as all get out, we may not have names that suit us.

However what you aren't recognizing, is that by you having the name, you teach people what a person with that name is. So if you know a Susan who is bubbly and energetic and I know one who is dour, then our understandings of what a name is will be entirely different since they would be shaped by different experiences.

calamitysandra -> RE: By any other name... (5/8/2011 8:10:05 AM)

I like my name well enough as names go, however, my mother choose to follow a naming fad, which was unfortunate. Especially as a child it was frustrating that where ever I went, whichever class I took, there were always 2 or 3 other girls with my name. Led to a lot of being called by my last name, or having a number tagged onto the Sandra. GAH!

Taught me to pay heed to the current naming trends when choosing names for my sons, and to avoid at least the top 10.

Tantriqu -> RE: By any other name... (5/8/2011 9:00:49 AM)

Didn't really like my name growing up, but at least I was the only one in my year with it, unlike the poly-Dianes, Jans and Kathy's.
Then I found out the root meaning of my name, and thought it suited me, then yes, post-adolescence grew into my own identity, so all three of my names are mine, since and now.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: By any other name... (5/8/2011 9:29:36 AM)

it varies. most of my life i went by my middle name (lynn - actually lyndsay, but have never been called that), but nowadays i use both my names. i like the two together, they run together well and sound like a single name. it does not suit me at all...it means "grace".  yup that's me to a tee alright [:D]

Arpig -> RE: By any other name... (5/8/2011 9:56:31 AM)

My name is plain, but I've been Bob for 1/2 a century, so its pretty much how I think of myself now.

OK, lets get the pig man laid...cute story time again.
I was born in Japan, and according to my parents' plan I was supposed to be a girl (Ooooops, sorry Mum). My mother liked the name Mariko, and was going to name me that, thinking that growing up they could call me Mari or Mary. When I came out somewhat other than female, she said she almost named me Mariko anyway, thinking I could go by Mark. Thinking back, growing up I'm glad my name wasn't Mariko, especially having done high school in Japan. But now, as an adult, I sometimes wish she had of, it would be cool to have a totally different name that needed explaining.
