People have been commiting terrorists acts since the dawn of time, sometimes people justify it by calling it, fighting for civilisation.

A bigger percentage of the world's population is probably more materially satisfied now, than at any other time in world history. Through most of human history, a human life has been short, brutal and wretched.

If you are American, then your gas prices are dirt cheap. However, one of the reasons your gas prices have risen, is that you over consume. That is economics, not the end of the world.

However, we ignore global warming to our cost and believing in god won't get us out of the dilemma, god has never intervened before where people have destroyed their habitat and suffered the consequences. But then we wouldn't destroy the world, just make it unliveable to us.

Praying to god will make little difference. Life has materially improved on the planet through human endeavour. Now mentally, spiritually and psychologically, it's doubtful we've improved it all.

ykdnme -> RE: End of Days. (5/11/2006 2:32:59 AM)

The end days are certainly comming for this planet, but they are not due for at least 4.5 billion years,so we have a long wait. Our species would have evolved further by then and may well have colonised other worlds in other galaxies.

Equally our species may well have become extinct by then, since everything is finate and only the universe itself is infinate.

Much money is made by people who recycle the same religious dogma and associated garbage. 1000 years ago they were professising the end days which they expected at the turn of the first millenium.

There is also a fixation with 2000 years which never changes. One of my great grandfathers, born in 1846 recalled being told Christ died 2000 years ago. A century later I was told the same bullshit. My nephews and neices are being told the self same bullshit today. My greatgrandfathers own grandfather, was told the same bullshit about 2000 years and he was born in 1798. Doubtless his grandfather before him heard the same nonesense. Clearly the established churches that make a good living out of preaching mythalogical nonesense, are incapable of realising that time marches on and that has each century,or for that matter each year passes, that it is no longer 2000 years.

Terrorism, wars and natural disasters have long occured. There are cycles of time when they occure more frequently than others, but they are not the harbingers of the end times anymore than the mythical four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Nostradarmus. Many books have been written over many decades concerning his prophecies. I have to laugh, each new edition makes certain claims which never ever come to pass. But the next edition then claims such and such an event was profesised,a check back to the last editions by the various recycled garbage arthors reveils the truth. Stiill every 5 years are so adolesence become adults and start to take an interest in what to them is entirely new.so the cycle of gullibility continues.
There is one uncanny thing though, the profacies of the long dead monk Malachy, concerning the succession of popes, have all be astonishingly accurate.

meatcleaver -> RE: End of Days. (5/11/2006 3:34:57 AM)

Malachy doesn't give dates though or at least I can't find any and his descriptions of the popes you could fit to my cat.

um Meatcleaver
my flatmate begs to differ,, Malachy actually numbers the popes in their succession   and the last pope is number One hundred and Eleven, so either Malachy stopped writing  or the pope according to him is due to kick off about 2020.. and he calls this pope' De Gloria Olivae' ( from the glory of the Olive).
cheers

2020? I know my insurance company will do anything not to have to pay out my pension. But the end of the world seems like going a little too far!

gooddogbenji -> RE: End of Days. (5/11/2006 4:58:52 AM)

If the world ends, we will all die.

Therefore, If the world ends, I will die.

Therefore, if I die, the world will end.

Therefore, if I die, everyone dies.

I think it's about time people started showing me more respect 'round here.

Yours,

benji

Revelations is not about the end of the world.  That is a misinterpretation.  It was a coded letter written to the Jews by Paul warning them of upcoming persecution by the Romans.  It was written in code that only the Jews would understand because Paul was imprisoned by the Romans on the island of Patmos.  The only hope of the letter getting through was if it was encoded.

ArtCatDom -> RE: End of Days. (5/11/2006 6:15:17 AM)

I have thought about this thread and the OP a lot.

I believe that if the Apocalypse was coming in modern times, based on the hints of the Prophets Daniel and John of Patmos, it would have happened during the early part of the 20th century. The Great Depression and numerous famines. Two World Wars. Almost countless epidemics, pandemics and severe disease outbreaks. The reestablishment of Israel. The use of nuclear weapons. And so on.

It seems to me the world has gotten distinctly better since that frame of time. That leads me to believe the end of days is a ways off yet and the worst we've seen in our age has been nothing more than the ups and downs of human existance (enabled by technology and travel).

Just my thoughts.
