Country music is huge in the U.S. so don't discount Carrie Underwood.  She's also had a couple of crossover hits.  She's not the crossover sensation that Taylor Swift is, but then she isn't trying to be.  Daughtry is the new Nickleback only with less booze and cigarettes.  Adam Lambert didn't win either but he's making music and getting paid.

Lady Gaga is this generation's version of Madonna.  As in, she's a carbon copy of Madonna, right down to her voice.  Katy Perry was a nobody until she ditched the gospel label and her overcontrolling parents and hooked up witih a good songwriting team.  She doesn't even create her own image - her publicist does it for her.  Katy Perry's only real achievement is marrying the horndog comedian Russell Brand.

Don't get me wrong, I like Katy and Gaga.  But don't make the mistake of thinking they're brilliant when the reality is they're just the current incarnations of something someone else did better 20 years ago.  Whatever you may think about the winners of reality talent shows, the simple fact is that they are making a living doing what they love.  That's the only thing that matters.

E2A:  It's too soon to tell whether the winner of The Voice will become the next music sensation.  This is the show's first season in this country and a lot depends on how good the ratings are.  If the ratings are good enough, the contestants who shine will have the opportunity to parley their exposure into a recording contract.  It will be very interesting to see how the hands-on coaching by some of the industry's leaders will affect their performance and subsequent success.

Huge?  I did a cross-country trip to California from Toronto last year and listening to the top music stations I could find, the only remotely country songs I heard were from Taylor Swift and even that is a bit of a stretch.  Most of it consisted of pop, R&B, hip-hop, rock, and a host of sub-genres underneath those categories.   There is a demographic that does like country, but they are still not big enough to have a sway on music to the point of dominating the charts.  A major amount of people, especially those my age when asked their favourite type of music I can guarantee that a majority will list country near the bottom.

Daughtry being comparable to Nickelback is an insult to any rising band, if you ask me.  Same chords, same sound, same blandness.

Granted that Lady Gaga is more of a "shock superstar" like Madonna but I don't see how her imagery can deny the fact that her songs are catchy.  Compare a song like "Telephone" to a Kelly Clarkson song.  Telephone is obviously much more friendly to the ears, more accessible, memorable, and you'll know it when it comes on who it is by.  Clarkson just tells us something that Avril Lavigne could.

As for Katy Perry, personally, I think she is drop-dead gorgeous so my opinion of her is biased.  Her songs are again, catchy beyond all belief.  Her image as of recent I think has been a bit of a diversion (especially with California Girls/ET) from her usual self to try and compete with Lady Gaga but as a pure singer she is much better.

If anything, Russel's crowning achievement was marrying Katy Perry.  A great media move for him, "the drugs/sex bad-boy gets tamed and put back on path."

If we think that way then everybody is just a wannabe of someone else.  Would you say Nirvana had a big impact on music?  Cobain was influenced by The Pixies.  Does that take away from his brilliance?  Not at all.  You'll have your "theatrical" performers like a Lady Gaga, or a Madonna because they enjoy expressing their music through visual.

It's great they can make a healthy living doing what they like to do most, but if they want to break through that glass ceiling in music then they have to have some sort of edge to them.  That's where an image can go a long way.  These winners need to have more than just a couple records underneath their discography before fading into obscurity.

I think she means he's one of the contestants on the Dutch version of "The Voice", which, apparently, is where the show originated.

Ahh thanks.

Well, American Idol gave us Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Jordan Sparks and Adam Lambert.  You may not think much of their music but they're all making it in the mainstream.  They also making more money and are more famous than you.

You forgot Jennifer Hudson. Oscar winner and all over the place right now, due in part to her weight loss.

I'm watching this week's battle round.  Xtina's proteges, Raquel Castro and Julia Easton, just did Rihanna's "Only Girl In The World".  Raquel killed it.  She's so adorable; I can't believe she's only 16.

Was anyone else surprised that Beverly was chosen by the viewers? I was!

As for Blake's team, I am actually glad of the choices made there.

But...

I think the best one out of all of the teams is Javier Colon. Still...it will be interesting to see how the next round goes.

They announced a search for the next season of The Voice. I wonder if the same coaches will be involved, or if it will be a new group.

I don't care for Beverly or Frenchie really.  But between the two i would have to go with Beverly over Frenchie.  But honestly, i don't think the talent in this show is all across the board great but i think the pickings were more narrow also.

I think the talent is in vicki and Javier and Nakia and oh what was her name -- the little 16 year old -- she rocked.  I was surprised at Adam's choice, i wasn't expecting that.  I thought he would go for the nerdie medschool looking guy lol.

I think Blake made a bad choice in senia.  Dia has a very odd sounding voice which i think is what gives her the notice so to speak - it will be interesting to see where she goes on the show -- she doesn't fit so to speak into a catagory lol.

I can't decide if i like this show really but i sure have opinions on it lol.  To me, its like American Idol when it hits the top 15, without allowing us to really become vested in the participants because it moves so fast.

I think it will come down to Javiar and Vicki.  grins, or at least i hope it will.  Well hell now i want it to be Nakia also.  Blah!  I am so undecided lol. I do have to say this, i could learn to like Adam Lavine lol.  He is a cutie.

lol Adam just said it best, i haven't heard that song before but you just forced me to like it lol.

Ack! barelynangel, I will respond later. Spoiler alert needed! I started reading and then realized you were referring to tonight's show! It's still 40 minutes away here so I haven't seen it yet. :(

I actually wasn't surprised by anyone's picks except for Christina's (last week).

Oddly enough, I prefer Frenchie over Beverly. But I don't see either of them winning.

I think you may have mixed up Xenia and Dia. Xenia is the one with the unique, raspy tone.

I voted for Frenchie, Vicci, Dia and Javier. If the choice were up to me, it would be between Dia and Javier. I really love how Dia does her own interpretation of a song, plus she has a wonderful voice. I feel like most of the other contestants have that belt it out and all that, but there is something missing. At least for me. Javier? Gosh, he has such a beautiful voice.

I think what I like most about Adam is that he has displayed more and more of himself as a genuinely caring person. And he's not bad looking, but I like a deep voice, so he doesn't do it for me. ;)

Oh, I know I like this show! I could never get into American Idol past the audition rounds. But for whatever reason, this show is different for me and I'm really enjoying it. And surprise of all surprises, I've become a Blake Shelton fan! :D

Three out of four of my picks went through! I guess the next show is the final one?? What a short season, if that's the case.
