Country music is huge in the U.S. so don't discount Carrie Underwood. She's also had a couple of crossover hits. She's not the crossover sensation that Taylor Swift is, but then she isn't trying to be. Daughtry is the new Nickleback only with less booze and cigarettes. Adam Lambert didn't win either but he's making music and getting paid. Huge? I did a cross-country trip to California from Toronto last year and listening to the top music stations I could find, the only remotely country songs I heard were from Taylor Swift and even that is a bit of a stretch. Most of it consisted of pop, R&B, hip-hop, rock, and a host of sub-genres underneath those categories. There is a demographic that does like country, but they are still not big enough to have a sway on music to the point of dominating the charts. A major amount of people, especially those my age when asked their favourite type of music I can guarantee that a majority will list country near the bottom. Daughtry being comparable to Nickelback is an insult to any rising band, if you ask me. Same chords, same sound, same blandness. quote:
Lady Gaga is this generation's version of Madonna. As in, she's a carbon copy of Madonna, right down to her voice. Katy Perry was a nobody until she ditched the gospel label and her overcontrolling parents and hooked up witih a good songwriting team. She doesn't even create her own image - her publicist does it for her. Katy Perry's only real achievement is marrying the horndog comedian Russell Brand. Granted that Lady Gaga is more of a "shock superstar" like Madonna but I don't see how her imagery can deny the fact that her songs are catchy. Compare a song like "Telephone" to a Kelly Clarkson song. Telephone is obviously much more friendly to the ears, more accessible, memorable, and you'll know it when it comes on who it is by. Clarkson just tells us something that Avril Lavigne could. As for Katy Perry, personally, I think she is drop-dead gorgeous so my opinion of her is biased. Her songs are again, catchy beyond all belief. Her image as of recent I think has been a bit of a diversion (especially with California Girls/ET) from her usual self to try and compete with Lady Gaga but as a pure singer she is much better. If anything, Russel's crowning achievement was marrying Katy Perry. A great media move for him, "the drugs/sex bad-boy gets tamed and put back on path." quote:
Don't get me wrong, I like Katy and Gaga. But don't make the mistake of thinking they're brilliant when the reality is they're just the current incarnations of something someone else did better 20 years ago. Whatever you may think about the winners of reality talent shows, the simple fact is that they are making a living doing what they love. That's the only thing that matters. If we think that way then everybody is just a wannabe of someone else. Would you say Nirvana had a big impact on music? Cobain was influenced by The Pixies. Does that take away from his brilliance? Not at all. You'll have your "theatrical" performers like a Lady Gaga, or a Madonna because they enjoy expressing their music through visual. It's great they can make a healthy living doing what they like to do most, but if they want to break through that glass ceiling in music then they have to have some sort of edge to them. That's where an image can go a long way. These winners need to have more than just a couple records underneath their discography before fading into obscurity.
