It isn't just the actual presence of guns in the home, but simply the knowledge that they are out there. I'm always reminded of a story that made the papers that cover such things years back. A robber had murdered a store clerk, fled on foot, and hid in a garage a few blocks away. The occupant of the house then flushed him from the garage with a shotgun, straight into the arms of the police. Except it wasn't a shotgun, it was a broom, and she thought there was a dog in there, chasing her cats, when she went through the door yelling, and brandishing her "weapon." Personally, I think a couple good dogs are a better first line of home defense.
