ParappaTheDapper -> Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 9:28:10 AM)

Here's the sitch: I play basketball in a local league a couple of nights a week. First let me say I'm a pretty awesome guard with a decent jump shot and a propensity for breaking the ankles of guys who try to guard me because my dribble is like my Indiana Jones/Magnum PI fanfic (it's always crossing over). But then let me add that this is a league full of mostly 30+ guys and even though some of us used to be pretty good jocks back in the day (captain of my grammar school basketball team right here) none of us are ever going to go pro or be recruited by Coach K. It's just goofs being goofy although sometimes shit gets taken seriously because we're guys and that's what happens when we play a sport and girls watch.

But that brings us to my question. There are a number of girls who show up week after week to watch their significant others ball. I've gotten to be pretty good friends with one of them, who has nearly completed her PhD in molecular biology. We talk a lot, and she's like a high school girl the way she gets enthused over how her boyfriend plays. The boyfriend is a nice guy too, and they're a cute couple. But recently it's begun to strike me just how sweet it is that she is so supportive of a dorky little pastime like a basketball league for a bunch of never-weres and knuckleheads like us.

Are you supportive of your S.O's dorky little hobbies? I usually haven't been in the past, but I'd like to think I will make more of an effort in the future!

Depends, if not moaning and complaining if he bought yet another guitar, amp, pedal or assorted stuff counts as supportive, then I guess I am. If it means sitting and listening to him and his friends practise - err nope, I value my hearing more than supporting him that much...

LOL harsh!

It's not harsh, we got 30+ guitars all over the house, some of them pretty damned expensive, lots of amps, a whole cupboard full of pedals, he spends a ton on strings and plectrums and I don't complain, it's his hobby and I rather have him happy than hankering after a new (usually vintage, new for him) Les Paul or Fender Strat, I'm much more bothered by the stupid Lord Of The Rings DVD collections and figures that take up lots of space and magically collect dust, or the complete cast from Futurama that takes up valuable book space on my shelves...

We got an agreement, I don't moan about that stuff, and he doesn't complain too much about my pets (canine and feline and a pet rat) unless they sit in his leather armchair...

In his younger days Generic Dude played on several softball teams at once, a bowling league and a dart league. Then the softball waned as the body aged. A golf league got picked up as did a pool league. Then the golf and pool waned and a Harley got parked in the garage.

I've always been supportive as long as there was still plenty of family time and he was able to pay his share of the bills.

With the women in my life, the relationships were different, D/s. One was very into her modeling and acting, truth be told, I was not thrilled. It was detrimental to her health both physically and emotionally. She did not need the money.

I encouraged my kids to 'Get involved!', always.

G. Dude has not always been supportive of all of my hobbies......especially those involving 4 legged creatures. He has become a lot more supportive of my photography now that it is actually making money and paying for some of the equipment. He is directly responsible for that. I suck at marketing myself and he excels at it.

It depends on the hobby and how much time they spend. If we're talking about playing computer games all night and ignoring me, then the answer is a big no (and yes, I speak from experience). If we are talking about something that helps them be a well-rounded person, then I'm all for it. I have hobbies myself and they are my escape from the world. I extend the same courtesy given to me when it comes to my partner's interests.

Icarys -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 10:32:34 AM)

Sure, why not. The last female with me liked to do beadwork. I wouldn't participate but I did enjoy watching her because she was enthusiastic about it. I'd ask questions so that she could tell her stories about the things she has made. I really didn't care about what she was doing so much as that she was happy doing it..Which I enjoyed.

Depending on what the hobby was, I have joined in with them.

Can't say that all of them returned it. [:D]

I'm not so much supportive as continually amazed by how she seems to be really good at pretty much everything.

In the interest of full disclosure I should point out that I've kept at least one girlfriend waiting for a few minutes while I finished leveling up in Fallout. But I mean, c'mon, it's the DC Wastelands!

The love is mutual, even if you are a ho.

Does that ever get on your nerves? I mean like no obviously you're proud and impressed and all that but on some level does it get under your skin?

I used to date this girl who could consistently beat me at table tennis and it drove me NUTS!

Yr profile pic is my all time favorite here btw!

I do support their hobby, as it is most of the time me.

BOOYA.

You seem like more of a full time job.

BAM!

I'm here all week. Tip the waitress.

MP pretty much goes from one hobby to another.  If it's something that I'm interested in as well, great.  I'll participate with him.  If it's something that I don't want to do as well, I'll encourage him to venture off on his own and enjoy while I'm doing My own thing.  I'm really not much of a 'sit in the stands and watch' kind of chick.  There's at least half a dozen fun things I could be doing instead that I enjoy that he doesn't.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 1:29:14 PM)

Oh he's a hobby collector type person. From trains to games to Napoleonic miniatures that he collects and paints and uses to reenact war battles. He has literally thousands of pewter military miniatures, along with ships, tanks, etc. -- all painted with historical authenticity. He even writes articles about war fleets and such for obscure magazines.

Last year I made a portable desert battle ground for him as per his specifications (he loves it). A few times a year his brother and his friends spend a few days at my house war gaming (he's the GM). Sometimes they let me play, but so far I have been undefeated, and you know how men can be at getting beat by a girl: not happy.

He plays games and has interests we do not share, and I am glad he is the type of person who has many different ways to entertain and enjoy himself. We have plenty of things like books, movies, hiking, camping, and many other interests that we share.

We're not bobsy twins, we're a couple.

tj444 -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 1:53:41 PM)

well, I am unattached at present so it doesnt really apply at this time, however, if my guy (once I get said guy) was good at basketball, yes i would watch, encourage, cheer, and ... ummmm... we could celebrate in our own special way after the game. [:D]

It would depend on the hobby, if it was something i could get into then i would join him, if not i would do my own thing. My ex's hobbies were drinking and watching hockey. The hockey was fine, i like to watch a good game and would join him on that. The drinking- no, not at all, that hobby was one of the reasons he became my ex.

When I am involved with someone I take an interest in what they do. If they wanted me to go with them, and I had the time, I would. At the same time, if they used that hobby as a way to get time to themselves, I would support that also. We all have different needs, so it would depend on what they wanted and my time constraints.

On the other hand, I am not into watching sports, so it is doubtful I would be attracted to someone that sports were tremendously important to them to the point I would feel the need to "support" it on a regular basis.

And thank goodness GD loves hiking and rock hounding as much as I do or I would be driving him batty with all the rocks all over the place.

When Sir was still doing covers in a rock band (He left to concentrate on songwriting), I went to every performance - and many rehearsals. I had to wear ear plugs because of the volume, but I still enjoyed being there and supporting Him- even the gigs that went to 4 in the morning.

As far as Him supporting me- although I have always sung in ensembles (a cappella jazz groups, mostly), this year, with much encouragement and coaching from Him, I have formed a light rock/jazz standards band where I am the soloist. I am really expanding myself as a singer and performer and Sir listens to the recordings of every rehearsal to give me feedback. He will also attend most, if not all of my gigs.

I don't know I this qualifies as a "silly" hobby, as we both are pretty serious about our musicianship. But it is an avocation and not our jobs.
