No, it goes over your head. MAKING MAXIMUM PROFITS IS THEIR JOB. PEOPLE GET PAID FOR DOING A GOOD JOB.

Where's anybody mentioned profits? Lucy was talking about CEOs who are more interested in laying off staff than taking a pay cut themselves. That's 178.7 million the shareholders won't get a sniff of.

subrob1967 -> RE: 10 Ceos, have to cut 47,850 jobs!! (5/15/2011 2:50:40 PM)

I always thought people started businesses to make money, not to hire other people... Silly me.

If you don't like how much money a CEO makes, stop doing business with their company, it's that simple.

Its the unions and government regulations and red tape (environmental and otherwise) and taxes that make it unprofitable to keep plants open here, they have to go where their businesses can stay afloat.

They do have to compete globally Luce, so they stay here and go under or they can relocate and turn a profit

Unions represent only 15% of employees in the US, and most of those are in the public sector.  So, you're saying all layoffs in the US are due to unions?  Shit, how about all the outsourcing of non-union high-tech  jobs over the last 10 years or so?

There's not a single damn person in this country that can compete with China, India, Vietnam, etc. - and no conservative on this forum will answer that one. (Mexico's too expensive, too.  Maquiladoras moved their operations to China, which exacerbated the illegal immigrant problem.) Ready to go live in your car?  You can't compete either.  Even radiologist jobs are being outsourced to India.  Might want to check who's reading your next X-ray/MRI/ultrasound, etc.

When there's no one left with a job, how will corporations sell their products?

Lucylastic -> RE: 10 Ceos, have to cut 47,850 jobs!! (5/15/2011 2:57:10 PM)

So a ceo deciding he wants another mil a year can cut more jobs and say  sales are down due to boycotts, he fixed the fat, he tightened his pants and the cuts were needed badly...
Snort yeah silly you

Why did you ignore 2/3 of what he said and claim his point was "all layoffs....are due to unions"?

And no conservative will answer what? I dont see a question there.

Again, these CEOs cant cut jobs if the jobs are productive jobs and still make money from the production said jobs entail

Production halts once the job is eliminated... so all that CAN be cut is the fat, if the goal is indeed to increase profits

Why do you think businesses take employees on in the first place?

Explain to me why companies have managed to make a profit for years without relocating or cutting wages.

Then explain to me why executive salaries have skyrocketed in proportion to their employees.

Let me guess Sanity, it was the worker's fault they got laid off and the CEO's got the big bucks for what exactly.

Is it really that simple?

Have you noticed the lack of competition in many industries and that the policies the supposedly competitive companies adopt tend to be remarkably similar?

Travel on the airlines recently?

Brain -> RE: 10 Ceos, have to cut 47,850 jobs!! (5/15/2011 5:01:11 PM)

Unfortunately for Wal-Mart the poor decisions made by management recently have resulted in a decline in value of the company's stock, I believe it was 3%. And this decline may continue into the future when people choose to shop at competitor stores like Target. That's about all we can expect right now. At some point they may realize this CEO needs to be replaced.

Not over my head, but definitely beneath my contempt
Im sick of hearing their particular line of BS, their joy  about the trickle down theory and the laffer curve and the wonderful Private sector that provides the jobs needed, and outsourcing is good for the country etc, the govmnt should keep out and stop regulating etc puke etc puke
and the myriad of excuses to cover up greed on sensational scale.
All the while blaming the worker
I hope they get a big damn repulsive case of karma

Travel on the airlines recently?

That's what competitive companies do, market similar products, at similar prices...Der.
How else are they going to compete if they don't price their products like their competition.

Airline travel, really? 1) It's a luxury, & 2) it's heavily subsidized by the government, and heavily regulated by the same government too.

Hint 1: Nobody gives a fuck about your "contempt"
Hint 2: Nobody "blames" workers.
Hint 3: There is no such think as "karma"

WAY WAY WAY over your head. But don't feel bad, you have good company on this board.

They are a great bunch of people, compassionate, funny strange, different , crazy some of them, but they have souls. And thats why I like them.

If someone is tossed out of a job somewhere, someone is getting that job somewhere else, if there is to be any production

Yeah, ok.... but the someone getting a job in another country is being paid peanuts, while the person in this country tossed out of a job just lost all their disposable income, and therefore their purchasing power. People out of work don't generally buy new Harleys, you know.

What good is production if the collective actions of companies that outsource destroy their own customer base in the process?

Termyn8or -> RE: 10 Ceos, have to cut 47,850 jobs!! (5/16/2011 3:33:54 AM)

Lucy, despite the fact that I noticed that you're currnetly engaged in a thing with EEEEEEK !, I just had to mention that I got a chuckle out of the fact that a health insurer is cutting it's employees' health benefits.

I chuckled because it renewed my faith in humanity.

And you should be nice to little willie. I'll explain business to you OK ? I make 10 million bucks a year. I am worth every penny as long as we can fuck enough people to pay the dividends. I work hard for that piddly 10 mil, I put in a grueling three hours last month, I signed something and had to listen to the phone ring for almost a minute because my piece of shit secretary had to go to the bathroom. I told her she needs some Depends from now on. Then I got in my jet and forgot where I was going, damn good flight crew. They got me to the whorehouse just in time, and reminded me to forget my cellphone in case my olady called. Can't piss her off, she's the one who got me this gig. She also gave me three,,,no I think it's only two wondeful children. Their names are in my cellphone but I forgot that.

I have to take another shower this afternoon, I have a party over at Rushes place, he's got some really good meds. Totally AWESOME. Where is my car ? Fuck there's twenty of them here, at least ten of them must be mine. I have to go down to the boat, well this boat. What city is this ? I think my dingy little 62 footer is here. Fuck it, just fill up the tank and I'll drive it down to my real boat. Which way is south ?

See, it's not over my head.

SilverMark -> RE: 10 Ceos, have to cut 47,850 jobs!! (5/16/2011 3:59:27 AM)

You know folks, CEO's are pretty easy targets and although I have a tittle of COO of a small corporation as well as CEO of my own consulting company I'd rather fire people than ever lay one off.

Granted the companies I run are much smaller but still represent well over 6 million in revenues, so therefore I usually know the individual on a fairly personal basis but, not all business decisions are easy, palatable or fair. If you are willing to work hard enough to get there you deserve the pay.

I make considerably more than someone who works in one of the warehouses but, my ass is on the line with each decision, with each hours business, each day, each month and each year.

If a corporation wishes to hire a person that is in great demand, they have to pay the price, if he doesn't perform, he won't last. Do some of them get paid an excess amount, by all means, but

the system is set to favor those who can perform. Would he or she be there without having performed and produced in the past, NO. They make the wrong choices often but, the decisions are

rectified pretty damn quickly. Not always fair but, it is the way business works, there is no Democracy and it isn't always fair.

Termyn8or -> RE: 10 Ceos, have to cut 47,850 jobs!! (5/16/2011 4:35:46 AM)

"my ass is on the line with each decision, with each hours business, "

Well that's just fine. But the problem is that the trend in really big business has changed. It use to be fairly simple for those who could grasp it, make a penny every so many milliseconds with no effort, then lather, rinse, repeat. In fact forget lathering and rinsing. You can literally be in fifty places at once making that penny, and multiplication is a wonderful thing.

However it has changed. DECADES ago banking regulation was changed, and they always had the FDIC on which to fall back. People with money learned a new trick, and now it's played like a goddamnned poker game. Know why ? Because WE THE PEOPLE stake them. I'd like to stake them, but in a different sense. OK, your ass is on the line. I can respect that. But that's not generally true anymore. They can run the place into the ground and get a bonus. School superintedents who couldn't teach a dog to die with a fucking gun are paid hundreds of thousands in severence pay which is OBSCENE. You think mediocrity pays off ? Try failure, it pays even better.

The new trick is to socialize loss and privatize gain. Prove me wrong and I'll kiss your ass on Times Square and give you an hour to draw a crowd.
