Arpig -> RE: Is it unethical to sexually objectify someone without them knowing it? (5/20/2011 8:48:24 AM)

quote:
And this is why I think it's wrong. Not that you imagining something about an actress will make her be attacked as in your imagination. No, I think the people we hurt when we do this is ourselves. By objectifying others, we get in the habit of doing so and this separates us from humanity. And men who do a lot of this, like men who watch a lot of porn, are men who become less socially competent and less likely of ever getting to happen in reality what they dream of. Karma comes back to bite us all on the ass, sooner or later. quote:
Men are more visual than women, so men are more likely to do this. Whether you believe in karma or a balance or just reaping what you sow is unimportant. We're talking about reducing other people to things, to denying their humanity. If it's okay to do so sexually, then why isn't it okay to do so because of their religion or skin color? Why isn't it okay to murder them? After all, they're not people really, they're sub-human things. It's a slippery slope and not one I propose to go down. YMMV. OK, You've posted a lot of crap in your time here, but this just about takes the cake. How the fuck you go from appreciating a good looking woman to murder is beyond me. What's next you going to pull a Godwin's on us? First of all, fantasizing about somebody is NOT objectifying them. Got it? Its NOT. So your whole premise falls apart right there. You are not reducing a person to a thing when you fantasize about them, well maybe you do...I don't know what your fantasies are like. Second, Fantasizing and enjoying porn is part of what makes us human, it makes you more human, not less. People have been making dirty drawings since the dawn of time for fuck's sake. If you are so repressed that you feel guilty about your fantasies, I'm really truly sorry for you, but to try rationalize it this way is simply stupid. Third, watching porn does not lead to social ineptitude. Its harmless, do you understand, its harmless. It causes no karmic backlash, or inability to get laid, or even to interact with people. And fourth, there is simply no logical connection between imagining somebody naked and committing murder. There is no slope, slippery or sticky, between the two. No connection, no slope. The idea is so ridiculous I can't believe somebody actually posted it.
