Lately I have come across a few posts on this board regarding us regulars, and how we twist things, or how we are snarky, etc. This is not a new concept. I have often seen this over the years I have been posting here, people who come on, do a driveby posting about how flawed this board is (meaning those of us who contribute here) and then they fly away. Sometimes they post repeatedly, other times they depart, never to be heard from again.

For those of you who are "regulars" ( I guess you know who you are), do you feel responsible for the overall content of this board? If you have been posting on here for years, do you think this somehow makes your words have more gravity, and therefore you need to be more careful in how you post?

For those who have not been posting here for very long, do you look at the date someone joined and their number of posts when you reply to them? If someone has been around for awhile, has a high post count, etc, does this cause you to think that they somehow have more pull around here, and and you read their posts as being more representative of what you find on this side overall?

Briefly, just a smattering of my own ideas on this topic.... there are some of us that are real douchebags who have been around for awhile. While I am even fond of some of these people, that doesn't make them less repulsive when you first encounter them (as for you douchebags, you know who you are). I just never thought that an entire community would be judged by the opinions of a few, which seems to happen here.

Another thing, I am not saying anyone should care if others like us or not, I am just wondering what other people think when they come across a post that condemns the "regulars" on this board... or if they have any thoughts at all about it (and i am bored waiting for the pest guy to show up).

No, I do not feel any responsibility for any one other than myself. Whatever I post I let stand on it's own merit. If someone is going to get their panties in a wad because they've mistake my intent, it is on them, not me.

How new someone is to the forums is, to me, only partly relevant. We were ALL new at some point. Besides, there are many regulars that are douche bags with nothing of value to say ever. We either used the brain in our skull and figured shit out, or we didn't. I am not giving anyone any coddling just because they whine. Whining will only gain them the opposite.

well as a relative newbi to the boards.....

this site is no different to any other i have been on. the way i see it is like a room full of people at a party that you don't know. there is always going to be the 'clique' that everyone denies being part of or exists. there are those who have to be centre of attention, some alittle loud and over baring, someone whining the music is too loud and the bar too expencive, a welcoming crowd that asks if you are ok, the know-it-all, the gossip, and the reserved sat in the corner, and those with a stick up their backside being pedantic about how the food is set out.

here is just the same, the only difference is that being virtual can give some an attitude they may not have in person. at the party you'd get a better impression of what the person is really like.

so with that in mind i work like this; i know i won't agree with everyone, that they won't always agree with me, i don't mind debating but can't be doing with people who get petty and insulting when they can't get a point over, i will leave a debate in the thread it's in, i may well be in total agreement with that person in the next thread i visit, i accept that i'm strange and don't work the same way as others, so that may mean that they don't get me or me them, i may over time form a negative opinion of someone online, but i would always keep that in reserve if i were to meet that person in real life.

as for longevity holding more sway. no, not always. it can work out handy though. for instance; when i first joined i had a very nice person from here pm me and give me some pointers, including a list of people deemed alright and a few to take with a pinch of salt. it was good to have someone there that when i had a query i could ask for their imput as to whether i was right.

so now i've waffled my rubbish, i'll look forward to what others say lol

Kinda my experience here, although some people hold grudges longer than others

Shit, here I have over 18k posts, and I thought some day that would entitle me to be worshiped around here, and now you are telling me that was an utter waste of time!

I think just the opposite. You get a much better sense if who someone is from "anonymous" posts. Not in the sense of marital status or income level, but in how someone handles confrontation and differences of opinion. And that is perhaps the most important measure of character. People are much less anonymous on the internet than they believe.

This is not the only forum I have ever regularly contributed to. It is also not the only forum where I have encountered the "You people with high post counts suck!" phenomena.

I do think that people should be able to come to a forum and figure it out... but I suppose not everyone is willing to take the time to.

Depends really, if somebody has a history of posts with a lot of sense, is quite reasonable, then the opinion obviously counts more than somebody who comes on and just has a freaking whinge fest and tells everybody how things ought to be...

As for feeling responsible, not at all, sometimes I have a bit of free time on my hands where I like to visit the boards and sometimes I'm quite busy and won't post for weeks or months...

Agreed. I believe that some of the most combative people on here are the least so in person. Many of them I imagine, are very reclusive, have terrible social skills and are usually very passively aggressive, if not just purely passive, with anyone they feel has slighted them, or that they disagree with......in their daily lives. I imagine them coming here to have a release for those frustrations, constantly hammering all their pent up spewage, trying to verbally beat people people into submission. Basically attempt to do here, what they wish they could do in their daily lives.

They are the type of person I do not want to know.

Nope...I feel responsible for my own content, not for the overall content.

If you have been posting on here for years, do you think this somehow makes your words have more gravity, and therefore you need to be more careful in how you post?

No. For me the number of weeks/months/years someone is posting on here does not matter to me. The individual posting matters, not my overall opinion I might have based about that person so far... therefore within a debate the answers matter to me, not the posting count...

For those who have not been posting here for very long, do you look at the date someone joined and their number of posts when you reply to them?

No...except when someone whines how long s/he would be on here already and damning everyone on here...thats the only exeption. In other topics it is pretty irrelevant for me since how long someone is on here and how many posts have been made

If someone has been around for awhile, has a high post count, etc, does this cause you to think that they somehow have more pull around here, and and you read their posts as being more representative of what you find on this side overall?

No...after all everyone has different reasons for posting much or little, the content matters to me, not number of time...

That's what I would consider as part of life at times...that people get judged at times based on others behaviour or opinions...

Another thing, I am not saying anyone should care if others like us or not, I am just wondering what other people think when they come across a post that condemns the "regulars" on this board... or if they have any thoughts at all about it (and i am bored waiting for the pest guy to show up).

I couldn't care less what others think about me (or us) as some posters said in the past quite rightly at the end of the day most folks are just pixels on the screen as we will never meet them anyway...so why would I care what pixels think about me

In real life I do care but online, not really.

I love to get people going. Incite them.
And I think it's funny when some of the posters call me a conservative.

I can't believe my Mom let you into my basement.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!

Seriously, I have two thoughts
1-Like most forum boards, there is definitely a group meme that emerges from time to time. Think how folks(Myself included of course) react to aTwue Dom type post for example.
2-I am responsible for what I post. That's it. And that's a good thing too, because you folks are just flat out wingnuts, the lot of ya :-)

lol in real life in a room full of people i don't know? i'm going to be the reserved one sussing everyone out first. i'm like that in general though. then i'll say my bit and generally people look at me gone out because i don't say what they expect. i am strong on my opinions simply because for 18 years i wasn't allowed one, or certainly not to voice it anyway. but once i know people i'm pretty open about stuff but prefer to still just sit around chatting rather than being flamboyent and drawing major attention to myself.

don't they just. some could do with lightening up and realising that debate can be good, it doesn't mean you have to change your opinion though, just maybe understand the other person's point better. resulting to petty insult shows alot about someone's inner self though.

Too lazy for that, if somebody clearly is an idiot, I just press ignore, I mean why should I waste my time reading stuff from somebody I think is mentally a bit deficient?

IRL you wouldn't have a conversation with somebody who you think is clearly insane or just an idiot, so why do it here? It's a waste of time.

I used to be the one that debated things fiercely, now I just do not care much to do this anymore. I am the one that usually throws the party, and tries to get everyone else to talk, at least in real life.
