What's to answer, RML? I referenced the numbers Reagan pulled, on a thread about reelection. I responded to your request with about as simplified a display of what I was talking about, as a simplified display can get, and you decided to claim you knew my mind and intent better than I do. Yep. The RCP average is showing a solid and well-earned 6 point bump from the bin Laden mission, and it's still on a slow climb. Foreign policy bumps aren't going to have great legs in a down economy, but we'll see what he does with the goodwill he earned.

Besides, taking out bin Laden is an important job done well, with the best possible outcome (except for maybe the crashed top secret stealth aircraft).

Yeah. Pretty much, anyway. I saw that Sen. Kerry took care of that. Wouldn't you have loved to be a fly on the wall for that conversation?

On the other hand, that we had it, and what it could do, aren't secrets anymore. The photos I saw at the time showed kids carrying away pieces as souvenirs, and the skin and materials are important pieces of the technology.

The bump itself is temporary.  However, the mission does knock out two GOP arguments against Obama:

1. He's weak on terrorists and will let other countries and terrorists push him around.
2. He doesn't know what he's doing.

It also muffles some of the mutterers that he's a Muslim radical in disguise, or that there's something un-American about him.

While I agree with you about the economy being an important issue in 2012, the Ryan proposal makes the GOP look ridiculous.  The GOP needs to move beyond its focus on tax cuts and reductions in social programs as the solution to all our ills.

Well, the GOP field just broadened again.  Giuliani is dropping hints that he might run again, and Rick Perry, who once suggested removing Texas from the US, is also dropping hints.

Weird, I heard about Perry being a possible this morning and then later this evening it was squished as just rumour

Not only is Rudy Giuliani dropping hints, Steve, CNN has him as the frontrunner. I've been hoping for quite some time that he would get into the race. I've liked a lot about Rudy for a long time.
