They dont care about lengthy ultra extravagant vacations or if GITMO is still open...

None of that is important NOW

Spain has been led by the Socialists ever since the new constitution was ratified. I'm guessing 30 years is long enough in power. I do note that the winner was a European style center right party, which would be considered leftists by Sanity. Actually I'm thinking Sanity thinks Franco was a pinko.

Or maybe youre thinking of the way Barney Frank practically single handedly crashed the housing and financial markets...

Only problem with that is that Frank is and has been a Democrat for his entire political career

Does the name Phil Gramm bring anything to mind about the crash of the housing and financial markets?

Only problem is he is a Republican so he couldn't possibly have anything to do with it in your one-track mind.

Sanity -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 5:35:50 AM)

It never did bother me particularly because of the sunset clause

I knew someone who said the sunset clause didnt matter though, because (he said) Congress and whoever the next president was would just keep extending it, just like politicians do with temporary taxes

Idahos 6% sales tax began as a temporary 3% "sunsetted" sales tax back in the 50s or 50s and its "temporarily" gone up by a penny every so often

With a sunset clause attached to every raise, of course

Are you saying you are against it?

tazzygirl -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 5:37:24 AM)

So you are saying you expected it to remain in force, if I am reading what you posted right.

Sanity -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 5:41:03 AM)

Would you like to get back on topic 0

Dont worry

Theres a hell of a lot more on the Spanish Socialists in the Time article I linked to alone

I am just waiting for the leftists here to throw all of their derails and their name calling at the topic before I bring them in for discussion, and hit on the main points again

Lucky wanted to address the leftist hypocrite aspect for a minute, and considering how thick its been of late I agreed that it is indeed topical

We will address the topic of the thread very shortly though

Socialists getting the boot in Spain after thirty years in power

I promise you

I will even let you lead off if you would like

Do you have anything intelligent to contribute regarding the subject?

No, my friend did, I didnt suspect it would, I foolishly believed in the sunset clause

Who beside my offline acquaintance would have thought that a Dem Congress (or Dems in Congress) combined with  a Dem president would keep renewing it for example

DarkSteven -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 5:47:41 AM)

The shocking thing is that the Socialists held onto power for thirty years.  Evidently by living on borrowed money.

After the crashing entry of fiscal tightening, I'm not surprised they were ousted.  I suspect that the next few ruling parties will have to reconcile political reality and fiscal reality and will get ousted as well.

Austerity ain't fun or popular.

Sanity -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 5:54:07 AM)

I agree with you Steven with one additional point

Thats just like austerity here. It wont be popular, even though it is necessary and it is prudent

mnottertail -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 6:14:23 AM)

I remember trotsky quoting and high fiving a communist just the other day.  Seems like you guys are out of step all over the world.

I have learned to believe in little, regardless of who is in power, Sanity.

Arent Reid and Boehner behind this? And we are talking about a 4 year extension, if Im reading it correctly. While I have never been a big proponent of the act, I can see some merit in keeping it a few years more.

Considering that most EU conservatives and conservative parties are to the left of moderate/bluedog American democrats,it means jack shit.

Ah, but what if they'd won?
"A HUGE victory for socialists!"

mnottertail -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 6:39:35 AM)

Thats the sort of talk we would expect from people who quote them and independents.

geilematz -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 6:52:56 AM)

Within these 30 years Spain had a PP (Partido Popular/Conservative) government for one or two election periods too - just an umimportant fact considering that some of you seem to use every issue to discuss US party system - something nobody outside the US gives a fiddlers's fart for ...

get your political homework done at home

think about the role of US-based rating agencies trying to ruin state economies for someone's profits ...

I'll howl. It's Bush Light, and I hate it.

Cheney wanted to make the presidency stronger. Now we have to live with the consequences, whomever is in office.

As to the OP....

Spain is a complicated political mess, and has been for a century. Comparing it to U.S. politics is silly, irrelevant, and pointless.

As already noted, European labels/names mean very different things than the same terms in the U.S.

Owner59 -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 7:09:53 AM)

Some of us know the world doesn`t revolve around the USA.

True tho, using American political standards to analyze European politics is like using a water bucket to measure distance.

Again, the con-dopes see the word conservative and cheer but don`t realize that EU conservitives support and back socialized medicine.

Nonsense. Obama pushed to have it renewed. He didn't have to. Or do you think Cheny has some secret power of controll over him? we did get treated to lots of conspiricy nonsense by your side (not you that I recall) when Bush was in power.

The fact is it was necessary and good legislation. Needed to protect the country.

A lot of Dems just wanted to oppose it for nothing but political reasons and electoral advantage.

Which borders on Treason in my opinion.

Sanity -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 7:20:22 AM)

Are you seriously trying to tell us that there is nothing that may be learned by examining the world around us?

Im thinkin' youre hiding your head in the sand, metaphorically speaking. There are all kinds of lessons to be learned, all we have to do is open our minds a little bit

mnottertail -> RE: Spains Socialists Routed (5/24/2011 7:21:38 AM)

Nonsense  You can lie and pretend that each of the branches of government go in and clean house and prosecute the previous administrations for thier treason.

Some administrations in each branch net increase their power in the supposedly equal power structure, sometimes they strip power of another branch.

Having use of that power and extending it helps lock it in, for good or evil, and helps deny the slow undoing.........
