6. This is Spinal Tap (Excellent stuff, funny as hell)
5. Reservoir Dogs (Superb! One of my all time favourite films)

3. Taxi Driver (Excellent!)
2. Casablanca (Superb film making!!)
1. The Godfather (Hated it, one of the worst films ever, overly long, boring, and  inept...it just sucks - except the music).

Good Fellas--loved it!!

This is Spinal Tap--saw it several times so far. A classic!!

2001 A Space Odyssey--saw it when it was first released in whatever they called that really spectacular theater with speakers everywhere, sound bouncing around the room. I had taken a quad- hit blue flat, so I'm sure that's why I didn't find it boring.

Taxi Driver--I concur

Casablanca--seen it over & over & over. Superb indeed

The Godfather--don't really remember how I felt about it

I don't think I've seen any of the others, but I have black holes in my memory, so who knows? The other thing is that if I only see a movie once, unless there's something in it that really draws me in, I won't remember much of it. I'm fascinated by people who remember whole scenes line by line. Although when they insist on relating a scene to me, I find it incredibly boring & wish they'd just stfu & I'll go rent the movie.

I want the manpig back.

Status: offline 		Great topic man. I'm going to take these out of order, because that's how I roll and also because I want to pay special attention to Blade Runner.

I think Blade Runner is one of the clearest and most distinct examples of a film that is deeply dependent on the set and setting in which it is viewed. I dig the movie, no doubt. Like, if I sat down to watch the film with you, I'm pretty sure that would be an awesome time because we are both awesome dudes! But it's also a film where if you get sucked into watching it with either people who just don't get the film at all or who do "get" the film in a kind of creepy "Oh dear Lord this dude is going to try to lure me into his UFO cult isn't he?" way then sitting through this very good movie can feel like an eternity. There is an entire class of film like this, in my opinion (see: Every Python film) where the section of the fan base you happen to encounter while you're trying to watch it can make or break the experience.

I've yet to see The Great Escape, though I should, and though I did enjoy the completely unrelated Blur album of the same name.

Apocalypse Now was like fifteen kinds of awesome. When I was a kid Heart of Darkness was one of my favorite books and I think that when Coppola and John Milius (the inspiration for Walter from The Big Lebowski, apropos of nothing and everything all at once) worked incredibly well together on the adaptation. And of course Brando, oh God Brando. It's also so much fun to see such a young and callow Fishburne in the mix.

Spinal Tap is hilarious on its own merits. Come to think of it, it's another one of those "set and setting" films like Blade Runner.

I have a serious boner for Reservoir Dogs. It's like Blue Velvet's slightly friendlier cousin, and I have an even bigger boner for Blue Velvet.

Casablanca is just beautiful.

I honestly did not like Good Fellas or The Godfather. I know that's heresy, but there you have it.

I did enjoy 2001. I was uh...you know. I was 17 and it was summer break and it was a hot July night and we were all....uh you know. That's really the only way that film can be enjoyed, I think.

And of course Taxi Driver was aces.

Status: offline 		I don't understand pretending to have seen a movie. I love movies, G.D. and I share that.........though not always do we share a love for the same movies. Right now he is all engrossed in 'Patton'. We've seen it multiple times. I do not love it. No big hate, but definitely no love. I have to assume it is his previous 20some years in the military that causes him to love it so.

If I haven't seen a movie, I tend to ask about it, if the person/s I am talking to liked it and why.

Status: offline 		Blade Runner - good, but nothing like the book it's based on.  Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was dozens of times better.
 
Good Fellas - not bad, I'd watch it again if it came on but wouldn't rent it.
 
The Godfather - I endured it for the sake of being able to say I've seen it.  It was pretty boring, but Al Pacino made it bearable.
 
2001 - I've seen parts of this but not the whole thing.  I've read the book and it wasn't very good so I have no great desire to see the movie.
 
Casablanca - Again, I've seen parts but not the whole thing.  I'll get around to watching it one of these years.

Great Escape  excellent  particularly McQueen and Garner
Blade Runner   not bad but a little slow
Goodfellows   didn't like at all
Apocolypes Now other than I love the smell of napalm in the morning both boring and offensive
Spinal tap  never seen
Reservoir Dogs same
2001  read the book saw the movie cause it had to be better it wasn't

Agreed, though I do think it was the best PKD adaptation to date. I had high hopes for A Scanner Darkly but it just fell dreadfully flat. I think that as 20th century writers of deeply paranoid, surreal black comedy go, PKD may be the hardest of all to adapt. The only real response to trying to film one of his books seems to be to follow Scott's lead in Blade Runner and accept from the outset that your project will be inspired by, but bear only a limited relation to, the source material.

Honestly, of all the 20th century writers I love, I don't think any would be much more vexing to try to film than Dick. Lem, I suppose, and of course until recently Lem was around (and quite eager) to explain in hilarious, bombastic detail just how much he hated adaptations of his work.

Saw them all, the only one I didn't love was 2001 Space Odyssey. 

Godfather  LOVE!! Have seen it at least 20 times.

Reservoir Dogs  see above except maybe 10 times

Taxi Driver. One of my top 5 movies ever. Fucking love it.

Arpig...how can you *not* love The Godfather?

Anyway, most people I know have seen all of these movies. What I think most people do is pretend to read classic literature. All the time.

10. The Great Escape (yankee BS: go watch The 49th Parallel or Morning Departure)
9. The Blade Runner (Excellent, and in love with Rutger Hauer ever since; sadly the director's cut isn't)
8. Good Fellas (Started to watch, stopped)
7. Apocalypse Now (Quite good, but needs more editing and less Brando)
6. This is Spinal Tap (I'll give it an 11. Smell the glove!)
5. Reservoir Dogs (truly dreadful and unleashed the anti-human that is quentar)
4. 2001 A Space Odyssey (Boring and wankerish in a sci-fi way, unlike Eyes Wide Shut which was just wankish)
3. Taxi Driver (would only make 44 minutes on a CSI episode now)
2. Casablanca (Dated, but a touching classic, and worth watching over and over again: although imagining Ronnie Reagan as Rick gives me the heebiejeebies; if remade now, Rick and Ilsa would use the letters of transit for themselves and abandon her husband to his fate)
1. The Godfather (Hated all of them, three of the worst films ever and progressively bad, overly long, boring, and inept...even worse than the book).
So when someone says they 'loved' GFIII including Sofia Coppola, I know they haven't actually watched it.

For the International list, I would add: (first three in my top 25 of all time)

M [Truly chilling, and stands the test of time]
Metropolis [same: chilling and stands the test of time]
All Quiet on the Western Front 1930 [what Private Ryan should have been]
Rashomon [never saw, always intend to]
The Bicycle Thief [have never been able to finish]
Pan's Labyrinth [vastly overrated]
Life is Beautiful [vastly overrated]
Brief Encounters [sniff: also if remade now would end with the doctor and heroine running away]
The 400 Blows/Jules et Jim, or any French new wave [so wankerish now with all the spoilt bourgeousie]
Any Fellini or Italian neorealism: SCTV did it better

The Seventh Seal [More a cheap student film, although again introduced me to a lifelong crush of Max von Sydow: I prefer Wild Strawberries]

Status: offline 		Saw 10, 4, 3, 2 and 1. I liked them at the time. I don't think I would have like Godfather if I hadn't been with a really hot date.

However Taxi Driver came on tv a couple of weeks ago and my teen watched it, I felt no desire to see it again 30 years later. And at this time of my life, I'm sure I would dislike it.

5. Reservoir Dogs (I always seem to watch it in bits and pieces. Never seem to watch the entire movie so maybe I just don't get the full affect)

1. The Godfather (didn't like it.).

Many of these movies are mob/violent type movies and I just don't get into those types of movies. I find them rather boring or at most blase most of the time. There are some great quotes from them but otherwise they just don't do much for me.

  • The Great Escape -- Who doesn't like Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw rolling around in the trash bin? She's so sub to his dom, the movie is worth it just for that.
  • The Blade Runner -- Another great movie, but I'm a Harrison Ford fan.
  • Good Fellas -- Some great actors, but not my style of movie.
  • Apocalypse Now -- Great movie if you lived through the war in Vietnam. Youngsters might not get the significance. Fantastic sound track.
  • This is Spinal Tap (Excellent stuff, funny as hell) -- Agreed, only more so.
  • Reservoir Dogs (Superb! One of my all time favourite films) -- Agreed, but then I am a Tarentino fan.
  • 2001 A Space Odyssey -- Depends on how stoned you were at the time.
  • Taxi Driver -- Wonderful vintage DeNiro.
  • Casablanca -- I've probably wanted this film a hundred times, and I get sucked into it (and get a lil misty eyed at the end) every time.
  • The Godfather -- I'm not a fan of the Godfather movies, although there was a great group of actors in the first film, and I like Pacino in anything.
