That story does not surprise me...

Here is another example of inappropriate things done in the name of religion in the military

This part is just wrong:

Tops must be long enough to cover the midriff.

I would never get hard again if that happened.

perhaps down the line,as it has in the past,it will be the Republican Party.....but in order for that to happen they would first need to reclaim their party from the extremists who have co-opted it.

Well, but there's my point. It's not the Republican Party anymore. It just trades on that name. If some guy dressed up in a gorilla suit mugs you, you don't go off ranting about gorillas -- you report that you were mugged by a guy wearing a gorilla suit.

I could never live with shorts that long... it gets hot here.

It has changed though... it used to be sleeves had to be three quarter lengths... they eased up on the girls

A Republican led sub-committee, headed by David Dreier (R-CA) blocked a bill that would allow abortions to be covered by the health plan, when a servicewomen gets raped.

There are several increasingly powerful Christian movements in the US that have as their explicitly stated goal the subversion of the Constitution of the United States and the creation of a Christian nation with Christ as its King. They have targeted the Republican Party, and have largely (but not yet completely) co-opted it. I realize that some people enjoy being partisan bigots and shitting on the other party at every opportunity. But what we really have here is a Christian Taliban. And in my opinion, the sooner we start calling a spade a spade the better.

It's a miracle! [:D] Can I endorse your sentiments 100% please?

Wherever these people have attained power, they try to impose their beliefs on society. Look at the status of abortion in Ireland or Poland for instance.

The comparison to the Taliban is precise and totally justified. If one takes into account the murders of doctors who perform abortions and the bombings of abortion clinics, there's a convergence of operational tactics as well as outlooks.

Fundamentalism of any variety is fundamentally evil.

Interesting that right wingers here are not interested in defending the policy.

Yes, isn't it. Hold that thought. How could that be? Maybe because forbidding abortion, totally and completely, regardless of the circumstances, is not the position of those who are politically on the "right". Maybe because that kind of shit is only on the agenda of...

Well no, I don't want to give it away. [:D]

I think you were on to something when you said that the Christian Right had co-opted the Republican Party, and most within that party are pro life. I think there is a lot of fear on the part of conservatives to come out against anything remotely smelling of pro life agenda....

What was the unintended consequence? People certainly knew what was going to happen back in 1980 when Reagan hopped in bed with Falwell.

Nobody "knew" what was going to happen. Human beings cannot predict the future. Nobody "knew" we were going to end up facing the situation we have today. And given the disturbing growth of Christian Dominionism in the United States, it is as likely as not that we would be facing it with or without Reagan.

They are the tail wagging the dog of the Republican Party.  They are one of the few groups that you can count on to show up and vote in lock step.  That fact often gives them too much control in a primary.

They would love nothing more than to turn the US into a Christian Theocracy.

From what I've read, though I don't have any links at my fingertips, they've gone way beyond wagging the dog. They've actually been running "stealth" candidates, dressed up as "conservative Republicans," who unzip and attempt to pursue a Christian Dominion agenda after they're elected. In fact, if some of the shit one hears about these days is anything to go by, they're growing bold enough to not even worry much about being stealthy anymore.

Look, I'm not sure holding up the Mormons as an example of ANYTHING advances any discussion. With a Mormon, you KNOW what you're getting.

Kirata,

The Mrs family are far right fundies and I was dragged through it as a kid.

I have watched them become bolder by the year with how far they can push.  Her Grandmother constantly forwards us emails from some of the groups.  Mostly we just delete unread and keep quiet to keep the peace.

Every now and then we read one and they are eye opening to say the least.

I believe everyone should be free to pursue their religious ideas and beliefs.  I take issue when they wish to make the rest of us follow their path.

In many places republicans cannot get elected unless they profess the platform of the Christian Coalition, including the Christian litmus test....Pro Life, Pro prayer in public schools, pro Creation Science, pro abstinence education, pro US military to spread Christian values....

I have seen good hearted Christian people turned into a voting block by people that had agendas contrary to their own. The Republican Party has no intention of really ending abortion.... they would lose that all important wedge issue if they did... at the same time, democrats use it too.

That's been true for years.

Frothy Mixture was openly a Dominionist for example.

I'm a far right wing wack job. But I must say that all these religious issues don't make a hill of beans to me. Inflation is the priority. I would vote for the most religious of the religious right wing nut jobs out there assuming they are  fiscal conservatives. I don't believe for one second abortion will be outlawed or that we will have prayer in public schools. Not that I believe the constitution addresses abortion or it is somewhere written in it there is a wall of separation of church and state. It's just that if hyper inflation takes over, who the fuck is going to care about all this stupid religious shit ?  Once the inflation problem is under control, like that's going to happen, I can go back to being a left wing wack job.

What religious groups are so powerful as to be some kind of threat ? Inquiring right wing nut jobs would like to know.

"The comparison to the Taliban is precise and totally" *unjustified*  " If one takes into account the murders of doctors who perform abortions and the bombings of abortion clinics, there's a convergence of operational tactics as well as outlooks"

How often does this sort of thing happen ?  It seems to me it's a relatively few idiots and isolated instances, not some powerful religious conspiracy.
