Basically, PC defered the draft.  If more young men knew that at the time, Peace Corps offices would have been over-run with Volunteers - namely those that were going to Canada.
 
I was soooooo damn "straight" at the time!  Actually went for my physical with two, identical forms.  One Peace Corps, one for the draft. Living in Chicago at the time, was assigned the big Armed Forces intake "plant" downtown.  So, what the hell.  I remember the HUGE urinal area - lots of litttle plastic cups with every shade of piss you can imagine.  Must have been 60 or 70 guys in there at any given moment.  So, I had to fill two cups, one for each "form."  <I had NOT had sex with another person at this point.  I had NO clue as to my orientation.  And I certainly had NO idea that I was into water-sports. LOL!>

Any-who, continued with Peace Corps application - and again, was so damn straight - that I found out that to leave the US, one needed the permission of one's local Draft Board.  Kewl!  I fired off a letter typed on my electric typewriter that I had bought out of my high school graduation cash presents. <wow! this is 1971, mind you.>  I asked permission to leave so that I could serrve as a PCV.

In return mail, I was denied such permission.  I called PC headquarters in Wash., DC and they told me to ignore that.  CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!  /font=sarcasm/ And recommend by these . . . . . these. . . . . . evil people INSIDE our beloved government.  WHAT was WRONG with the Feds?  Why were the 2 parts NOT working together??? /font=Verdana/  As we left Philadelphia, I truly expected the plane to be boarded by draft "agents" who would drag me back to urinate more.
 
That's all for now, except to say that I would NOT give up this experience for anything.  I truly think that 2 years government service at age 21 or BS degree - whichever is first - would turn this nation on a new, better course.  There's a thing called VISTA - basically domestic Peace Corps.  So, take your pick = Peace Corps, Military, or VISTA = volunteers in service to America.
 
AND most do NOT know that you are NOT "really" a volunteer.  Salary IS paid - commesurrate with local economy - I was paid US$60.00 / MONTH - that's right - $2.00 per day! - and one may NOT have any outside source of income. (Paris Hilton would have a blind trust, for example.)

I would absolutely agree with this so long as the non-military options are plentiful. I didn't join the peace corps, but when I was in my early twenties, I worked for a privately funded organization out of RI that trained low income kids and young adults for maritime employment. Lots of hard work and basically a stipend like you. But something like 25 of the 100 or so kids I trained  went on to mass martime and are ranking officers on Merchant vessels.
   Volunteerism really does enhance the future prospects of a country

Status: offline 		My daughter was interested in joining the Peace Corps for a stint, so I wrote them and asked if non-US citizens were allowed to join, as it wasn't really clear from their website. They never replied. Does anybody know the answer?

They hire people in the native country to do things like be a secretary, etc. but no. However, there are other things that can be done. For example Doctors Without Borders, Engineers Without Borders, Earthwatch, etc.

I also looked into it.    No luck... and really I doubt I would have liked being on foreign soil.        Instead I joined the Americore.  


http://www.americorps.gov/  If I recall correctly- I did need to be a US citizen for that.

1) Maybe there are volunteer opportunities through your daughter's country of citizenship.  Where I was stationed, there were parallel organizations serving from Canada and Britian.  Oh, how it would piss 'em off that ALL volunteers (white or not) were referred to as "Peace Corps."  LOL!  Actually - One American Thanksgiving, we PCV's threw a traditional American Thanksgiving feast - YOU figure out how to keep a turkey frozen for a couple of weeks after its arrival on a boat.  Oh yeah, and then there's that whole cooking thing to deal with.  My assignment was a no-bake pumpkin pie using local squash.  I still remember getting the thing at market, paring it and cutting it into small cubes that would fit in the teeny pot on my Coleman stove.  [Carry empty tank down mountain side to the only 'dealer' on the island to re-fill.]  Then boil and sieve.  But I digress.  Do have to mention that they, in turn, threw a traditional English Christmas, complete with big roast beef and crackers.

2) There were a number of ex-pats who had "regular" jobs.  One gal in particular had written, looking for teaching posts in French and Spanish and was hired as such.  She was known as the French Mistress just as I was the Maths Master and we were THE hot topic in the market - but just for one week. After that, it was just a given that we were "doing' da t'ing."  AHHhhhh.... you never forget your first, right?  Well,  my first was when the French Mistress, Miss Mary Mercy threw me my first.  And better yet, it was on my 21st B'day when I related the fact that I'd never had sex with anyone else.  She took me by hand, had me lay down on my back and she climbled aboard.  How many can say their first was a "Mercy fuck" and MEAN it? LOL!

Status: offline 		I wish i would have taken a few years before starting college and joined the peace corp or some such concept.  I think it would have grounded me better into determining what i wanted to do with my life career wise.  But from the time i was 2 mom and dad were shoving college down my throat so that was the path i followed. 

I am not sure i agree with the demand for some kind of service or college for kids unless college was a free option for them.

You help out in your own neighborhood first.
Look at the countries that the peace corps was "helping" in the 60's, they're *still* getting "help" from us 50 years later!
That's not "helping" that's creating dependance.
The Peace Corps should have been disbanded decades ago!
Can I get a "Cum-Bay-Ah!"
This reminds me of the people who adopt "foreign babies" while there are tens of thousands of babies who need to be adopted in the U.S.
I wonder how many of those peace corps volunteers sat around campfires in third world countries singing "make you feel good songs?"
