Words to live by:

"What's your safe word?" is not a pickup line.
"I do whatever the voices in Master's head tell me to do."

"Sometimes what seems like surrender isn't surrender at all. It's about what's going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain of not being true to it is far, far greater." -- Nicholas Evans

I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naive or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman. -- Anais Nin

I am your servant. I shall not be free. You will protect me; you will keep me safe; you will guard me. You will keep me sound; you will protect me from every demon. -- Ancient Egyptian woman's slave contract

To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you
don’t grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown.
Instead you relax, and float. ~ Alan Watts

Faith

When you walk to the edge of all the light you have
and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown,
you must believe that one of two things will happen:

There will be something solid for you to stand upon,
or, you will be taught how to fly

This one has always been interesting to me. I am a person who thinks in "try-speak." Long story but I have low self-esteem (and I _like_ having low self-esteem, it's quite useful in the goals I have set for myself and it helps me to learn) and the upshoot is I am never fully certain about my abilities. I will think (and less often, for obvious reasons, speak) that I probably can do something but I am not really certain, because I never am really certain--if I stop to think about it. The only time I do not think in terms of "I will attempt but I may fail" is when I'm directly ordered to do something. Whether or not I think I can do it is usually immaterial then. The point in those situations, obviously, is to make a full effort. But to me there is almost always a "try" in my mind in all other dealings I have. I honestly do not know if I can do something or do it right until after I do it. Because "try-speak" is closely related to other attitudes, such as humility (aka low self-esteem), that help me, I am loathe to get rid of it.

All of which is good, but I'm a type A results oriented driver so I'm all about getting things done...and getting them done right.
Not knocking your approach or your reasons why, just showing things from my POV.

Understood. I've been something of a "hired gun" for much of of my adult life, so I'm quite experienced, personally and professionally, with Type A's. Try-think doesn't affect the outcomes of my actions. It just colors my interior world. As an example, I always meet deadlines, no matter how heavy the workload. And my deliverables are considered exemplary by everyone--except myself. Being reliable is fairly high on my list of self-priorities. Nevertheless, the "you are shit" self-talk never stops. I just don't permit myself the indulgence of acting on it...except in those rare occasions where it is appropriate. :)

‘How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?’

Winston thought. ‘By making him suffer,’ he said.

‘Exactly. By making him suffer. Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own? Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.’

"do or do not" was part of my previous M's philosophy. i tend to be a "try-speaker," too, but he was very results-oriented and try-and-fail was still, ultimately, failing. (that sounds so much more drastic than it really was =p he was a realist, and realised that sometimes people DON'T succeed -- it was never held against me, it was just how he thought of the world.)
of course when he died, all i could think was that, no matter how hard we tried to save him, we still failed.

philosophy can become just as much of a trap as having no philosophy at all. always temper it with a good dose of realism.

Amen. We don't have absolute control over our environments, and that's what I always factor in when I think about whether I can accomplish something or not: those balls from out in left field that I cannot anticipate or plan against no matter what percentage of room I try to make for them in my strategy. Our environments affect us just as much as we affect them. Like you said, people die--no matter how very hard we try to prevent that. I'm fairly good at try-and-succeed, but I will almost never say flat out that I can do X unless it's something very simple that I can do instantly. There are just too many unexpected things that can happen between your plan of action and its realization.

Which reminds me of another pithy warning quote for slaves:

"There's many a slip, twixt the cup and the lip."

I'm sorry to hear your master died. Looks like we share something in common.

Thank you, Kaliko. :) I like yours, too. It's very practical advice, although I find it hard to believe there are people out there who reallydon't believe that it is raining. :^p

"I get up, I get down."
--Yes

"Many people in master-slave relationships insist that their relationships are just like any other relationships. I believe them, fully, because my experiences--in conventional or "vanilla" relationships, in master-slave relationships that can barely be distinguished from conventional relationships (except for the sex acts), and in a more concentrated form of enslavement--tell me this is unquestionably so.

"As in most conventional relationships, slaves who have entered the purest form of master-slave relationships feel happy at times and sad at times. But, unlike other relationships, including the many master-slave relationships that are more conventionally-based, these emotions feel very different to such slaves for the following reasons: (1) the sources from which these emotions emerge are vastly different; (2) the awareness of inescapability profoundly colors the emotions in unexpected hues; and (3) more than anything else, certain emotions/events/experiences that are culled from the slave's world and other emotions/events/experiences that are added to it by her master make happiness and sadness taste very differently than their more-common counterparts."
