I do not think there are many people who are being harmed by this, least of all tourists

PA, when was the last time you went to California to pan for gold?

I've been there a few times and not once did I try panning for gold. I was just taking care of business as fast as possible, so I could get the hell out of the state!

Never been to the Sierras... how unfortunate for you. But then again, if you don't know what you've missed, you can hardly be faulted for it.

^ California is nothing with out tourism.  If people think they cant play gold miner-  they wont come and spend money.

Yes, with our sucky weather, crappy beaches, ugly mountains, burned out forests, limited number of places to ski (water or snow), whale watching, deep sea fishing, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Rodeo Drive, LeBrea Tar Pits, Tinsel Town in general.. well, we would be just lost without those tourists who pan for gold ... both of them make regular visits here actually .. good ol' Fred and Hortense. I know them well.

As for the salmon.. GET IN MAH BELLY! MUHAZ!

No. I was always stuck in the city. The never ending city. At least that is always the way it felt.

You need to go to my California, which is the Sierras... and the foothills that lead to them. This is where they mined for gold. There are entire mountainsides that they eroded away with horrible mining techniques.

I am Yosemite Sam because my family homesteaded in that park... it is in my blood, and nary a prettier place can be found, although many equal it.

You should REALLY read the link before you post it

quote:

Up to 4,000 people in California use suction dredging to extract gold.
It involves motorised rigs which act like giant vacuum cleaners, sucking up mud and gravel from the bottom of a watercourse and then using gravity to sort tiny quantities of gold from the rocks and dirt.

A wet dry vacumn that most people own.  The law is onerous.

A vacuum dredge has no relation to a fricken' shop vac.  Jesus.

Hydraulic mining did terrible damage to rivers in California.

Now, as to the Central Valley, which problems are you talking about?  Kesterson Reserve?  Ground water contamination from rocket fuel?  Saline contamination of fresh water supplies due to decreased river water reaching the delta, allowing sea water to move up stream?

The only state in worse shape then CA is IL.

They just don't want you to own any gold.   Even tho it is the golden state.   Well - was.

BTW- you left the part out about the gangs and how only a small % of the people speak English.    Something like 15%

You are so far off the mark that it is beyond laughable, show me where only 15% of the population of any state speak English.
California's gross state product is 1.8 trillion dollars, by itself is the 8th largest economy in the world. I am certain that there are no gangs in Pennsylvania....right, none in Philly? none in Pittsburgh?...riiiiiiiiight.... Might be one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The Pacific Coast highway alone is breath taking, let alone the mountains, Northern California wine country, San Francisco and so many other unique places and things to see.

Suction dredges are not the only way to extract gold. I get mine with a shovel.

That is without a doubt the most ignorant thing you have ever posted.

Dude.. it's your thread. Connect the dots. We are talking about reasons why tourists come to CA and I PROMISE you, gangs are not one of the reasons!

I'm not going to call you a liar for making that statement because I believe it probably stems from your ignorance and whatever learning disability you have which accounts for your inability to comprehend the English language. You are backwards. 15% of Californians do NOT speak English... about comparable with the rest of the country. About 85% of us get along just fine here in our native language.
