Brain -> Patriotic Millionaires Describe What Theyve Done With Their Bush Tax Cuts: I Built A Dance Floor (6/7/2011 12:35:49 AM)

It's unfortunate for unemployed Americans and their families Republicans are playing politics because they care more about replacing Obama and ending Medicare than doing what’s best for the country.

'Patriotic Millionaires' Describe What They've Done With Their Bush Tax Cuts: 'I Built A Dance Floor In My House'

"I do not know how much I've saved over 10 years but I'm sure it is several million dollars -- probably in excess of $10 million," said Egerman, founder of a medical transcription company called eScription. And what, HuffPost asked, have you done with all that cash? "I've kept it," he said. "I have not done anything with that money."

Egerman is part of a gang of self-described Patriotic Millionaires who wish the federal government would help itself to more of their money to address its big budget deficits. Nearly 200 millionaires have signed a letter asking congressional Republicans to consider healing budget gaps with increased revenue -- in particular, higher taxes on millionaires -- instead of just reduced spending.

"I got a bigger boat than I used to have," said Dennis Mehiel, the founder and chairman of cardboard box manufacturer U.S. Corrugated, Inc. He lamented that the construction of his 150-foot sloop didn't create any jobs for American workers. "The problem is, it was built in Italy."

My guess is there are at least 2000 millionaires who advocate reducing taxes. Who should the government listen to: the minority or the majority?

Fellow, I paid more taxes then General Electric this year. General Electric made a HELLUVA a lot more money than I did. They made $5.3 Billion, and I made under $100K. I think there's more people in this country who would like GE (and all the other companies) to pay their fair share of taxes. Yes, GE was 'taxed' at the 35% level, and yet, didn't pay a penny to Uncle Sam. In fact, we, the American people, paid GE just to do business in our country ($62.5 million in subsidies).

Many of those who are multi-millionaires can afford to hire a professional to figure out all the loopholes to save them big bucks. Those in the middle class (unless they are those professionals previously mentioned) simply dont have this knowledge to do the same thing.

We wipe out the Bush Era Tax cuts, eliminate the loopholes, cut $100-250 Billion and we balance the budget (no more deficit). We end operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and assuming no other wars for the next two years, and we'd see a surplus on the budget. And that surplus could be applied to the debt to help lower it faster. Of course, doing all this would make President Obama get his 2nd term in office without even trying. WHICH is why the GOP will fight tooth and claw and every milimeter to prevent this from happening.

But hey, its nice to know there are STILL some rich folks who know what it means to be American.

Let's say there are 100,000 millionaires who advocate cutting taxes. That means there are over 300,000,000 NON millionaires who would like to see them pay a bit more.

Who should the government listen to, the majority or the minority?

You inadvertently hit on the crux of the matter fellow. The government DOES listen to the minority. Money talks. The rest of us walks.

If that were true-we'd have lower taxes. The problem is that folks who dream of being a millionaires worry about the taxes they'd have to pay. There are lots of folks scraping by who think millionaires shouldn't have to pay more taxes- since it sounds like they pay more than they do. It's also the old argument- if a millionaire and you drive down the same road- why should he have to pay more money in taxes to do so? It's the same road.

The answer requires a bit of sophistications- the millionaire couldn't have made his/her money without the infrastructures- so that there are a bunch of people who've enabled the millionaire to amass his/her wealth- that's why the millionaire gets to pay more money in taxes.

If they want to donate their excess cash to the deficit, I am sure there is a way to cut a check. Why bother with a letter. Just give the money back and be done with it.

What about the ones who pay LESS than I do?

Your claim that people dont want to become millionaires because they would pay more taxes is just a lame assed excuse people use for their own failings, laziness and lack of ambition.

Aesop wrote about it in his fable of "The Fox and the Grapes"

My point was actually that the tax issue is oversold. There is no direct connection between the millionaires tax rates and how well the majority is doing. Perhaps the high end millionaires would like the tax rates (they do not pay anyway) increased to enhance their monopoly status and to shut down the competition (low end millionaires). The society where most of the population relies on (big) government handouts is not very pleasant to live in. I would force the large corporations to hire more American workers and pay fair salaries.

There is nothing stopping them from donating the money.

I dont know your financial situation but I highly doubt there are any millionaires that pay less than you do, unless youre a millionaire also.

Wow... that's pretty cool ... a guy who's made most of his money off the medicare and medical insurance process adding cost. Admits he's been just hanging on to the money without re-infusing it into the economy. The important thing being that if he is doing this and admitting same, what are the tight fisted fucks who have been making the really big cash been doing with it.

Maybe he can just take that money and find a way to infuse it back into the economy and start some kind of business that creates some jobs while he's at it. I am SURE there are people out there who have no shortage of ideas they can share with him. People who have great ideas and can't borrow to venture out and create thos opportunities.
Win/Win

Oh, then perhaps you can explain the mechanism whereby a private citizen can DONATE to the US Government's budget revenue. Cause as you know, I lack certain clues.
To be honest, I think that you'll find that there is no actual way to do that. And I think the point of these millionaires is that they want to have THEIR say about taxes. And they just don't want to do it under the table like the scofflaws that dump money into campaigns or hire lobbyists, fully expecting a return on their investment.

"Why bother with a letter" oh, now come on... stewie is smarter than that statement reflects

wilbur, I'm not a millionaire but I have a few friends with a net worth in 7 or 8 figures. Some pay less tax than I do. hell, General Electric with a net worth in the tens of BILLIONS pays less tax than My company.

willbeurdaddy did not touch my post (#2 above), Hill. He knows my post has some pretty clear facts regarding that I, who made under $100K this year paid MORE in taxes than General Electric, who made $5.3 Billion in the USA. Also, he did not touch what I suggested doing about the issue as well. Reason is, I believe he's a business man and understands the reason for taxes. He might not agree to what all it pays for, but than, neither do I.

If I became a millionaire tommorow (thanks to Powerball....), paying taxes would be the least of my worries. Anyone with real money that wants to keep their wealth, will have sat down with a financial planner by now and developed a plan. Paying taxes is simply an expense of doing business.

But rather than sit here, and BS about how multi-millionaires, and large, multi-national corporations are skipping out of paying their full 35%; why not devise rules that eliminate those very loopholes? So that General Electric ends up having to pay a few hundred times what I had to pay.

We have the best congress money can buy.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL What a stupid post!  I do not exist to "serve" my government.  My government was established to manage very limited aspects of overseeing a country; waging war, minting money, foreign policy and trade.  My State's government, which is supposed to be sovereign, obviously has more control over me; certain taxes, criminal laws, basic services, etc.

It does not make me patriotic to bail out a country that is hopelessly corrupt where nepotism and political favoritism directs the day to day affairs of Washington, D.C.  Paying more taxes than the ridiculous amount I already pay only makes me a quintessential DUMB ASS.

I'm glad the rich guy bought his boat.  It is unfortunate that it was built in Italy but if an Italian boat maker is making what he wants and a Hatteras will not suffice, well, so be it.  Unlike Brain and other liberals on this board, I'm not jealous of that wealthy guy.  He owes me NOTHING.

Liberals want higher taxes.  Why?  Because they are greedy pigs.  They would rather see the private sector, the non-unionized, non-government employees, pay more so THEY don't have to contribute to their health care or their pensions.  They worship this idiot fool O'scumbag that constantly seeks to grow government despite the fact that every government job requires 5 new private sector jobs to support it.

Well....I am happy to say with considerable relish that the days of working 25 years and then retiring with a pension that pays upwards of 2 million for the next 25 to 40 years are OVER.  I am also happy to say that the mechanics of Obamacare are not only unconstitutional but also impossible to support.  Some of the greediest little piggies are going to get hurt and hurt bad in the next few years and this country continues to spiral towards bankruptcy and lower ratings for its financial paper.  But those piggies DESERVE it. :)

lockedaway -> RE: Patriotic Millionaires Describe What Theyve Done With Their Bush Tax Cuts: I Built A Dance Floor (6/7/2011 11:55:23 AM)

Oh...and Hillwilliam,

If I am worth 300 million dollars due to my municipal bond portfolio AND that bond portfolio brings in an income of 20 million, triple tax free, dollars per year, do you have a problem with that?  Are you saying there should be no municipal bonds?  Do you know what the result of that would be? :) :) :)

mnottertail -> RE: Patriotic Millionaires Describe What Theyve Done With Their Bush Tax Cuts: I Built A Dance Floor (6/7/2011 11:56:13 AM)

LOLOLOLOL.  not.

SilverMark -> RE: Patriotic Millionaires Describe What Theyve Done With Their Bush Tax Cuts: I Built A Dance Floor (6/7/2011 12:08:35 PM)

Locked if what they are saying and what you are saying is true, doesn't that defeat the idea of how much money tax cuts will put back into the economy? Isn't that the Rights idea behind being so generous with tax cuts? Isn't the Yellow Brick Road to happiness that they all claim will fix the economic situation?
