I am going to bring her in soon.    Maybe when I go to the store- I will have to put her on the porch each time.

PA,

IF this is atypical of her then I would suspect one of 2 things: either her box was dirty or she is ill.

I've had a series of female cats, all spayed, and one neutered male, and every one of them has been meticulous about using the litter box. There was one exception, the one who would go into a closet and pee on shoes, but both times that happened, we had just moved to a new house and life was all in an upheaval. As soon as we settled down and she knew where her box was, she never did it again.

She may not like the litter you're using, maybe try another brand that's different from what you're using? Also, some cats are so meticulous that they won't go in the box once it's been used a few times. Also, you might try putting a second litter box someplace. Sometimes they just like variety. Cats are weird.

Please don't rub the nose in it anymore. She doesn't have a clue why you did that, you didn't teach her anything other than "he's mean don't trust him", and there's a good chance now that she'll just retaliate by pissing somewhere else.

Hello all.

I have calmed down now.

I went to the store- I wanted to buy another litter box so that she has 2 of them.   But they were all out.  I bought some flea spray, some food and some litter.    I sanitized her litter box-  washed it out real good. It was somewhat dirty.   Not bad to me- but maybe to her it was.  I really should have 2 boxes.   I sprayed rubbing alcohol on the pee area.

Good for you Hunky. And yes, get a 2nd box and put it near where she pisses.

Look here, I've lived with cats continuously since 1968 (do the math, that's 43 years); male, female, fixed, unfixed, indoor, outdoor, from birth to 21 years old, anywhere from 1 to 6 at a time. That's a fuck of a lot of cats over a fuck of a long time, and a fuck of a lot of consults with vets...I've come across just about every problem you can with cats at one point or another. What you've been told is true. Keep the boxes clean, and if that doesn't solve it, get ye to the vet.

Oh and with regards to punishing a cat, there is no point doing so after the fact...they won't make the connection. And the best way to "punish" a cat is to make a loud noise to startle them when they are doing something wrong (I prefer smacking a table or my leg with a loosely rolled up magazine), or use one of those plant spritzer bottles to zap them with a mist of plain water. Hitting them, rubbing their noses in stuff, and other drastic physical measures just doesn't work.

And be careful about throwing them outside as well, they are clever beasts. We had one cat who scratched the furniture a lot, and my Mum would put him outside every time he did it...guess what? Yup, he learned to scratch whenever he wanted out.

ETA: To deal with the piss spot & smell, just wash it with hot water with some Mr. Clean type stuff or a bit of bleach in it.

True on reward-  she does not like the enclosed back porch so it is not a reward for her.

We have alot of interaction-  I fuss and talk to her alot.   I pet her, hold her,  she is pretty tuned in to me.

I will have to sanitize the box more often and get a 2nd box.  She is laying on the bed now...  across the room.

I can certainly second that one...I prefer the tiny wood cut pieces as they smell much less IMO (though they make a bigger mess with cats dragging it through the house)  but my birmans won't be having any of that one and refused big time

like the others--I've had cats in my house (spayed and indoor only, males and females) for a long time, and there have been only a few times when they have ever urinated outside the box-- it was a urinary tract infection in two cases--and a really dirty litterbox in the other. (my roommate failed to clean it while I was on vacation)

Cats LIKE using the litterbox. They are clean animals, and it makes them happy to have a clean, quiet place to go.  They do not like peeing outside the box any more than you do, but they are trying to tell you something--either they have a medical problem or there is something else that is upsetting them (dirty box for example, new cat in the house, etc.)

Yelling at a cat is pointless.  Putting her nose in it is counterproductive. Throwing her outside (if she is not an outside cat) is cruel and wrong.
Take the time to figure out what it wrong with your cat or her environment--that's what being a responsible cat owner is all about.  If you aren't willing to do that, perhaps you should reconsider having a cat in your home.

I am going to kill her.

Get a man sized dog . . . it will eat the cat and then no more piss on the floor.

Why do I have that old ditty about the old lady swallowing a fly running around in my head all of a sudden?

Tell that to our Newfoundland dog. The cat virtually owns him, eats out of his bowl, walks all over him, and he steps aside if she wants to drink from his water fountain.

Both mom and the neighbor think the cat was upset that I changed my routine that day.    They both know the cat.

Either way-- I need to sanitize the box more.

Well, by being lesbian, you're eliminating (unfairly I believe) half of us.

Now what would my sexual orientation have to do with my friends' knowledge of cat care?

That halo is a bit tarnished heather. You're claimed and therefore off limits anyway no matter what your orientation.
