Same question to you as JO, does a confession to a victimless crime past the statute of limitations make him unfit for office?

Simple yes or no answer.

Lying about them clearly would (imnsho).

Here is the thing, you will always twist it because it suits you in your partisan world....

You are basically a hypocrite.

Answer the question please. There is nothing to twist. Simple yes or no answer. FL answered that it would make him unfit for office. I accept that answer but disagree with it.

I do not think that a person's sex life belongs as a deciding factor of whether or not they belong in public office. I do not think lying about what one does with their sex life means someone is unfit for public office.

I DO think that if a person goes after other people on their sex lives (such as passing legislation against homosexuals, and then is found to be having gay illicit sex) that should disqualify them from public service. I despise hypocrites... religious wackos who are fucking their aid's wives, for example.....

What does any of that have to do with Vitter?

And Im assuming from this response that you dont agree with FL on my original question. That confessing to a victimless crime past the statute of limitations and not lying doesnt in and of itself make you unfit for office.

This.

The only relevance prostitution has to politics is whether or not it should be legal.

I mean, really.

Seconded. Thirded? At any rate, I don't care whether a politician is fucking or sucking, as long as they're not fucking me over somehow in the process.

As long as the "me" thats getting fucked over is the overall "me"...the taxpayers, constituents, supporters and contributors, I agree. When it does become an issue is when they lie about it, because it destroys not only their own credibility on issues they try to further, but their entire party.

So then your saying it's ok for a sitting Senator to break the law?

Senator Ensign's transgressions are so much worse than Vitter's on every level, including payoffs for his mistress, and hiring her son for the Republican fundraising office... which was a violation of the law and the rules of the senate...

He did not resign because he had an affair, he resigned because the pitchforks were aimed at his neck if he didn't

Im still having trouble relating any of these issues to Vitter and your first post "he broke the law", which presumably was support for the OP's opinion he should resign.

there are laws now which encourage pandering in DC?

Is that why so many republicans are in office there, for the time being?

I agree. The GOP promptly takes care of these things, instead of dragging them out hoping the issue dies down.

Ensign's failures were known for a long time before he resigned. He resigned just before the ethics committee report recommending he be prosecuted was released.

There was nothing prompt about Ensign and the enabler Coburn who was neck deep in the bribes and cover up is still in the Senate.

I agree. The GOP promptly takes care of these things, instead of dragging them out hoping the issue dies down.

quote:

Embattled Nevada Sen. John Ensign (R) announced Thursday night that he will resign from office in early May [2011], a move that comes amid an ongoing ethics investigation into his conduct.

“While I stand behind my firm belief that I have not violated any law, rule, or standard of conduct of the Senate, and I have fought to prove this publicly, I will not continue to subject my family, my constituents, or the Senate to any further rounds of investigation, depositions, drawn out proceedings, or especially public hearings,” Ensign said in a statement posted on his website. “For my family and me, this continued personal cost is simply too great.”

Ensign’s resignation, which was first reported by Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston, will be official on May 3 and comes six weeks after he announced his plans to retire at the end of his current term, which expires in 2012.

His departure comes as the Senate ethics committee is conducting an ongoing investigation into his handling of an affair with a former political aide -- whose husband was also a top legislative aide to the senator.

Earlier this year the committee hired an outside counsel to begin a more formal investigative phase of Ensign’s actions, which would have likely led to either a public hearing on formal allegations or the public issuing of its allegations against the senator.

Removed from the Senate, the ethics committee has no jurisdiction in the matter and likely will keep private the results of its 20-month investigation.(convenient, huh?

In June 2009 Ensign publicly admitted that he had an affair with Cynthia Hampton, who was his political treasurer and was married to Doug Hampton, Ensign’s administrative assistant. The Ensign and Hampton families lived in the same neighborhood outside Las Vegas and were considered the best of friends.

In 2008, when the affair became known to the other spouses, Ensign dismissed both Hamptons from his political and legislative payroll. Ensign’s parents, wealthy casino magnates, paid the Hampton family $96,000 in what was labeled gift income for tax purposes, the precise amount legally permissible without triggering taxes.

In addition, Doug Hampton returned to Las Vegas and began working as a lobbyist for a consulting firm run by Ensign’s top political advisers. Doug Hampton has alleged that Ensign helped him line up his first few lobbying clients -- all donors to Ensign’s political committees -- and that the senator helped arrange meetings for Doug Hampton with Obama administration officials.

A Justice Department investigation into possible criminal activity by Ensign ended with no charges. Hampton, however, has been indicted.

Ensign’s resignation will allow newly elected Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) to appoint an interim replacement until the 2012 election next November.

So.... there were other senators who knew about this affair (btw) in 2008 and SAT ON THAT INFORMATION. He actually INVOLVED THEM IN THE COVERUP. He didn't actually RESIGN until the eve of the hearing, which was started BY A DEMOCRATICALLY HELD SENATE.

You are either ignorant, or full of crap, Will.

The OP`s question is to his supporters. Not the general pop.

Why no calls for his resignation?

The answer is: because he`s a republican.

We don`t need fuck`n neo-cons to agree, to know that`s the truth.

Are you saying Ensign and Coburn didn't know what they did and had to wait for the ethics report before realizing what they did was so bad that one of them had to go?
