Brain -> The Associated Press: US congressman wants Iraq to repay US for war cost (6/12/2011 2:45:40 AM)

This is the first idea I’ve heard from a Republican in a long time that I agree with.

The Associated Press: US congressman wants Iraq to repay US for war cost

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher spoke during a one-day visit by a group of six U.S. congressman. The California Republican said he raised the suggestion during a meeting with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that some day when Iraq is a "prosperous" nation it pay back the U.S. for everything that it has done here.

I doubt it'll fly.

Had Iraq invaded us and we beat the snot out of them, then there would be accepted precedent for demanding reparations.  Had we invaded them and simply grabbed spoils, there'd be precedent for that as well, and not good.  It would likely inflame the Muslim world, ad IMO rightly so.  Especially since our invasion was done under false pretenses.

Our Iraq policy has always been psychotic.  First we declared Iraq a threat on the basis of WMD.  Then we invaded, and the goal was a quick military victory.  After that, the justification for invasion changed several times - Iraq was behind 9-11, we would establish a beachhead of democracy in the Middle East and somehow democracy would spread naturally to the whole area, Saddam tried to kill Pappa Bush - until the idea of liberating the country from dictator Saddam was decided upon as the most justifiable.  We then used the armed forces for nation building and belatedly tried to figure out what the hell sort of government the Iraqis should get/was feasible to expect.  We still don't know what success will look like but are not leaving yet because we don't want to admit that we have no clue what we're doing and have or have not achieved our goal.

Analogy - you are in an old house that had the foundation shift and the resulting wall slippage is causing all sorts of problems.  Some contractor shows up unbidden and without consulting with you demolishes the old house and foundation, while you are still living there.  He thereupon tries to read some books on general contracting to figure out how to build a house, and ends up doing it with expensive sheets of copper and reinforced Kevlar for the building material.  While he does so, your kids steal some of the copper and resell it for cash.  He subcontracts with a security company to prevent the thefts....

The Arab world and Iran already are suspicious that we invaded for oil.  Frankly, they've never been given a justification that they understand.  If we demand reparations/conqueror's booty, I expect OPEC to jack up the cost of oil to the US and likely the rest of the world in retaliation.

Simply acknowledge that the invasion was one of the worst mistakes ever made in history, and suck up the cost.

An utterly offensive notion.

The US/West didn't invade Iraq to make it a better nation, they thought it had WMD's. They decimated the government infrastructures that were in place dealing with law and order as well as raw sewage and so they have a duty to make the country a prosperous place.

People are still being killed in Iraq the violence didn't end when the western media got so desensitised to the killing that the headlines stopped.

Close. They lied about it as an excuse to invade.

I thought Iraq was already paying, wasn't that the real reason for going there in the first place ?

Am just wondering when Afhanistan and Libya will start paying also.

That is like asking a rape victim to pay for the venereal disease her rapist contracted from the rape... seriously

ArizonaBossMan -> RE: The Associated Press: US congressman wants Iraq to repay US for war cost (6/12/2011 12:46:00 PM)

Great idea... that's exactly how it should have been from the start. It makes too much sense though. I remember brain dead leftists so concerned with war at the time versus now.. saying it was about oil. I answered I wish it were, then it would make more sense.

mnottertail -> RE: The Associated Press: US congressman wants Iraq to repay US for war cost (6/12/2011 12:48:33 PM)

So, we now invade countries on false pretenses and against everything they want in life, and expect them to pay for it.

Let's get some input from our friends the 'Inglorious (Limey) Bastards' on how that is gonna work for us.

Lucylastic -> RE: The Associated Press: US congressman wants Iraq to repay US for war cost (6/12/2011 12:58:56 PM)

Real well
NOT

mnottertail -> RE: The Associated Press: US congressman wants Iraq to repay US for war cost (6/12/2011 12:59:59 PM)

So, if you had imperialism to do all over again, how could you make it work (and pay)?

Lucylastic -> RE: The Associated Press: US congressman wants Iraq to repay US for war cost (6/12/2011 1:10:13 PM)

Me?
never thought about it, I always led to understand that after a war/ invasion of a country you helped in the rebuilding.
But my history may be wrong.
I look at it the same as Julia commented. but then Im a limey idealogue and too soft to be allowed out on my own
*sarcasm off*
MY great uncle lived his entire life as part of the empire in India as a child and then as a high ranking officer, He spent hours telling me his adventures and misdeeds of the ruling classes and was disgusted with his heritage and imperialism.
This was after he was invalided back to blighty. He spent the rest of his life, trying to help indian immigrants as a translator and advocate.
Empire while interesting historically and as heritage  is one thing. I dont agree with it as a RIGHT.
And probably why I get pissed when its used as a reason to police every country they have interests in.wether its france, the dutch, the spanish,  the english, the american, the chinese and the russians.
Might is not RIGHT
My two cents only
