But the US consumers didnt have to be sheeple/lemmings and so easily manipulated to go along with it. What ever happened to common sense? Same thing that happened to common sense in the Maritime provinces from what I can see. I am not disagreeing with you but it's a wider issue than just pointing a finger at consumers. And it sure as hell hasn't just happened here. And contrary to your belief that this is something that could be headed off with a consumer movement, it's like everything else to do with food production GLOBALLY. Just about all populations got sucker punched by globalization, tech-farming, fish wars, etc. These practices slipped in under their noses. And in some cases, information was even suppressed. It started with mishap regulatory practices in the fisheries which were seized upon by foreign fleets, fishing just outside territorial waters. While it became MUCH more costly to maintain a fleet towards the inland waters, floating canneries began taking ground fish more than the tuna and other school fish. And the big international fish companies got the edge over local fleets. And frankly, it's next to impossible to sell slightly more expensive, better quality fish to Americans who have a wall street-esque mentality of bottom lines and "tough luck if you can't compete". it's times like those when your local industrial mainstay (Like Gorton's Of Gloucester), becomes Japanese or whatever-ese. It's easy to offer a late to the table solutions like 'the consumers did it' ... of course they did. But middle men set the suckers up. Quickly and QUIETLY. And the fact of the matter is we here locally HAVE put solutions in place. They're just not enough to solve the problem (case in point): http://gloucesterseafooddisplayauction.com/ Ok ya got me on this one, I dont see what the US mortgage debacle has to do with fish. When I talk about commonsense, I am not advocating a consumer movement, just people to be responsible for themselves and their own actions.
