I love, love, love the Netherlands. The people, the county, the whole mentality and way of life. In fact, The Guy has a standing order to look for, and accept immediately, positions his firm offers him there. It is our major holiday destination too. We go for at least two weeks in the fall and one week in spring. (Not to Scheveningen, though)

He's doing what we in the America's call "pulling your chain". Since we're on the topic of Holland, can you tell me what people over there are saying about the government's new plan to ban sale of cannabis to tourists? I know that while it's not a main part of revenues, it's GOT to be somewhat significant, so I am sure the opions are flying around. I would love to know what you've heard. As a person on the streets, so to speak.

the weedthing... yeah right.... Oke, they are planning to introduce permits to visit coffeeshops, so foreigners will fall of the wagon then. The general expectation of our politicians is, that they will stay in their own country to buy there illegal drugs. I do not think it will help that much, it is going to be out of sight imo. Streetselling and again being bothered on the highways again. If I look around in my town, I do not think there is to much trouble around coffeeshops for the neighbourhoods where they are. But if someone asks me, to get him/her something I will... we are known around the world for our tolerance to softdrugs. But I'm not really aware what the streetopinion is right now, I'll ask next time when I am there. [;)]

I have always had a great interest in the Netherlands, as a fan of European history, its very hard not to. That and the connection between Canada and the Netherlands from WW2 make it an obvious place of interest. I don't know about nowadays, but way back when I was in high school, when a Dutch classmate found out I was Canadian, he made a point of thanking me on the day they commemorate the war (early May, if I recall). As well, the Dutch military attache always places a wreath during our Remembrance Day ceremonies. An interesting story.... When the Nazi's overran the Netherlands, the royal family fled to Canada, they lived in Ottawa (that's why we get a shipment of tulips every spring and why we have a Tulip Festival). Anyway, when the present queen's sister was born in Ottawa, there was some concern about her potential citizenship status. So for the delivery, the maternity ward of the Civic Hospital was declared to be "not Canadian territory". So in the technical legal sense, she was born in international territory, and therefore not eligible for citizenship anywhere, except in the Netherlands (due to her parentage).

And having an addiction is never right. But then gambling is a huge income post for our state and so is alcohol. The problem on this war on drugs thing is, that the growers and the shops are not paying their taxes. That's why they're so harsh on it.

My experience has been that the coffee shops were friendly, and a really cool way to meet some of the locals. And it's a unique atmosphere. Thanks for your info.

Arpig, we learn in school that Prinses Margriet was born in Ottawa and the Canadian government declared the room she was born in to Dutch grounds... If you say, it was international then our schoolbooks are really wrong [:D] I love history, I was born in the city of Rotterdam, which took heavenly bombing during the first days of the war, just to force the Dutch to surrender. They started Rotterdam and then threatened the Hague and Amsterdam, so we'd give in. Our Queen fled to England and supported the resistence from Londen, our Princes fled to Canada, with her children, Beatrix and Irene. By the way, did you know our Queen has an American halfsister?

If you say, it was international then our schoolbooks are really wrong i've heard both versions, but according to the cbc arpig is right. http://archives.cbc.ca/society/family/clips/12821/ either way, its still pretty fucking cool i was in a bar once with some friends and we were bitching about canada and how our military was a joke and how the world never took us seriously, and this old guy came over and interrupted us. he was dutch and he'd immigrated here just after the war. he said he chose canada because he figured that a country that would send tens of thousands of its sons across an ocean to liberate a country that was so small and insignificant when they weren't directly threatened had to be a decent place to live. it all gave us pause, it was interesting to get that point of view, to see canada from the perspective of somebody who saw us as saviours and liberators. its not something they put a lot of emphasis on in our media and school. hannah lynn

Him emigrating to Germany was the single biggest disaster in twentieth century Dutch television. I loved his Dutch shows. Even though he had left The Netherlands, he often was in the news. Though in Germany he was every day in the news, of course, on just about every page of every Zeitung und Blätter.
