By now they should have an awareness.   Maybe we should taze a cop-  because we might have to..just in case.

Every officer that carries a taser must be taser'ed as part of their training.

Diabetes is a serious medical condition.   It can lead to amputation,  blindness.   I am not diabetic, but I have been around people who are, as well as those with seizures.   Such people are not automatically drug crazed mad men.

With an aging population, and % who have disabilities- this must be considered by the LEO community.

Even more interesting, whenever you see statistics on the number of people taser'ed in a given year, that number never reflects the officers and trainees that get taser'ed. Wonder why.

But it's the same with OC spray or pressure points. The officers must endure them before they can use them.

I'm glad that's the case. OC spray isn't the same as pepper spray, is it?

Minor hijack - (re your sig line)

I have a caligraphied book of quotes of Lazarus Long (Heinlien). My favorite -

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."
— Robert A. Heinlein

Hijack over.

It is. Oleoresin Capsicum. I've seen officers spray it on their food.

Based upon what I read in the article and saw on the clip, it looks like it was an honest mistake. It sucks, but it happens.

An awareness of what?

Under those circumstances what was wrong with tasing him?  When approached he was aggressive and attempting to get back in his vehicle.

If it all happened the way it was reported, I don't see that the police officer did anything wrong. You weren't there. You don't know how threatened the officer felt. I have been with someone who was going into diabetic shock. She kept insisting she was fine, but she wasn't making any sense whatsoever. It took me a few minutes to realize what was happening & to get her taken care of & out of danger.

The police officer believed the man's erratic behavior posed a threat. He wasn't harmed in any way, according to the story. He's fine. Everyone is still alive.

Do you really believe that police officers should possess godlike qualities & be able to divine a person's actual mental & physical state from afar??? Sounds like something they did on Star Trek.

Really?  The story you linked claims otherwise.  Are you privy to information that wasn't in that article or did you just not read it as is usual with you?  Maybe you called the psychic hotline for this info?  How is Miss Cleo these days?

I see nothing wrong with how it went down. You have no way of knowing why he was so erratic, crazy hopped up on dope or something, or having a medical issue. I am just glad he wasn't hurt.

It says right there in the artical, the police man said he was. So how do you know otherwise?

Police say he got aggressive. He wouldn't put his hands up, he started rummaging through his car, he got out of his car and then tried to get back in.

Let's see...'how do we know we can trust the police? Police officers have lied before.'

That would most likely be pahunkboy's reply. All he needs to do is prove you wrong, by casting doubt on even the smallest part of this article. That's why I'm not bothering to reply to his statements about the article.

They are aware. The fact is that diabetic ketoacidosis can present like a person is very drunk, and an officer has no way of telling which it is if the person is acting aggressively. The man got out of the car then tried to get back in. How was the officer supposed to know that he was dealing with a diabetic emergency and not a pissed off drunk with a gun in the car?

So what should we do? Shock anyone and everyone that's acting a little funny?

There was a story on the news a while back where a guy who was at a mental health clinic was tasered to death cause the cops thought he was too erratic.

My brother is a Detective for a Sheriff department in Florida and has often commented that it was more or less joked about as funny to taser someone. It was the norm as far as he could tell.

Acting erratic doesn't necessarily mean aggressiveness. And for all we know..Their idea of aggressiveness might have been raising your voice. Then you have the possibility of a cop lying to cover his ass..not like that last thing happens really.

At least they didn't kill him.
