Similar to Tazzy's topic; what are the three most important things you believe our elected officials should address?

Sounds fiscal policy (this is one that has many issues in it like balanced budget, tax reform, and stabilization of the economy)

Reduction in our role as a military power, so that defense spending can be cut.

Campaign reform

Well those are mine, what do others say? I thought maybe we could focus on some substance rather than the majority of the "neener, neener" topics.

I agree with the first two, but don't believe we should cut defense spending, at a time when Russia, and China, are rapidly increasing their abilities. We should not be the worlds police though, and should stay out of wars that don't really affect us. My third would be to rewrite the tax code.

We could cut a LOT and still retain our role as a military leader.

We bizarrely overspend in this area.

Yes we do. We spend as much of the rest of the world combined.

If we remove ourselves as the world's police force, then we can have a reduction in manpower, with increase in technology that actually gives a return on investment.

1.  not worrying so much about other countries and concentrating here back home.
2.  Helping not only the poor but the middle working class who has to deal with the expensive health care fees but seem to get pushed aside because it seems the poor are the ones who are always helped first
3.  Keeping the cost of gas and food down.

these may not be the big "political" issues many will mention, but i think if we don't start concentrating on what the middle class needs and work to maintain the majority of middle class, our country is not going to do any better in the future.

without the middle class being strong and healthy, the poor won't survive and the rich won't stay rich so to speak.  so instead of concentrating on the extremes in our country, we need to get back to focusing on the people who maintain this country in a thriving way -- the middle working class and growing that again.  but it seems like everything is focused on either the poor or the rich and that really isn't where the problems are right now.

Well, to establish a more perfect union, you'd need to establish a Constitution.

You mean something like this?

"$2,500,000,000 for the procurement of ten C–17 aircraft. In a floor statement on September 30, 2009, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) voiced his opposition to the C-17 funding: “That’s why the Administration ‘strongly objects’ to the addition of $2.5 billion in funding for these ten unrequested C-17 aircraft. The Department of Defense’s (DoD) own analyses shows that the 205 C-17s that the Air Force has or which are on order, together with the existing fleet of C-5 aircraft, are sufficient to meet the Department’s future airlift needs – even under the most stressing situations. So, I am absolutely convinced that we should not be having taxpayers put up $2.5 billion for these aircraft. Doing so not only misallocates procurement funds this year to buy expensive airplanes that are not needed, but it also imposes a continuing sustainment cost of $100 million dollars per year for every year thereafter for their operation.” This earmark was anonymous. "

Notice above that this earmark was anonymous.

1. Stopping any and all special treatment for selected businesses. As in no more grants, subsidies, special tax deal, low interest loans to any business, ever. Now, a person could probably think of a few instances where this wouldn't be so bad, but the problem is 99 out of a 100 times it isn't done for those reasons, and the tiny bit of possible harm, is by far offset by the good it will do, stopping these city state jumping corps, that threaten one locality for "Special deals" or they move to a new sucker locality for the next 10 years. It just doesn't help shit. What it does is keep the megacorps with lobbyist out the ass, bathing in your tax dollars. Then we come back and complain corps don't pay enough taxes. Well, shouldn't we stop giving some corps special treatment first, before we jack the rate, or else if you keep this system, well they will just return it, with special deals or what not.

So, this would seem to me to be the best place to start, as it won't harm businesses that are already doing their "Share", and it will stop the localities and states from this insane competition to attract corps that are already in the US to their little section of the country.

2. Stop this practice of granting special treatment to corrupt businesses ( I consider lobbying the government for special treatment corrupt). Whoops already said that.

3. Reduce the military down, stop all activity in all the present areas that we are engaged in "kinetic" military actions.

Or you can refer to my list in the other thread which is what we are already doing.

1) Corporate personhood needs to be eliminated.

2) Returning to a truly progressive tax rate.

3) Education in this nation must be improved dramatically. Year round schooling and dramatically higher standards should be implemented.

OMG, that is so open for interpretation, and that open for interpretation is what has gotten us some pretty horrible laws.

Do you have any specifics? Though I do like what you posted and support it.

If we can get a few more responses, maybe we can actually find some common ground.

Orion, in the mania for cuts, we need to distinguish expenses from investments. Education and research, for example, are investments, and cutting them is counterproductive.

We also need to abandon the myth that we are poor. We spent the last 30 years slashing revenue, and the economic argument doesn't wash, as we did this in good times as well as recession. Then we lament we can't afford stuff! Nonsense. We've just decided not to pay for it--and that's unrealistic, leaving massive borrowing.

I agree there is a big difference between expense and investment. The rational business model will work in almost every situation. Where the problem arises is when Corporate Psychopathy becomes rampant in many of the larger corporations, and especially in the financial businesses.

More on Corporate Psychopathy

An example I use often in business is marketing, and customer retention. These two areas suffer the most when a business is doing poorly, but they are the two main areas that attract and keep your revenue flowing.

Education, and assistance programs are essential to keep a country going.

From what I have seen, education and fiscal stability (jobs, economy, tax reform, etc.) seem to be big issues on the majority of people's lists.

When I get some time, or if someone else has time, research into better education and the effects it has on a society would be a good topic.

If we can remember these things that are the most important to us, when looking at our politicians, it will help sift through the little petty stuff at the bottom that is often used as smoke screens.

Thanks to all that contributed. It is not surprising that a topic such as this does not have as many posts as others. For whatever reasons, people are drawn to controversy and drama, more than solutions. I suppose it is just not exciting enough for many.
