Oy.

I did not say that I agree with what the internet says is "newsworthy" but it is a rather good gauge as to what the cable news outlets will be talking about, and what people are paying attention to... not perfect though.

I look through the top news stories on google just to see what is trending on there. I read news from all over the place.

MM loves and craves talking head news bubble beads.  Anything else is not news to him.  It must be packaged like an infomercial and have the trademark on it.

Not everyone has moved on from MSM like we have.

Oh. I didn't realize.

Thank you.

Poor Japan... I feel so sorry for their troubles. As someone that lives in the Ring of Fire, I am hyper aware of how it could happen here, and if things are not done to stop it, it probably will.

And what would you propose we do to stop a Ring of Fire sort of disaster, Julia? You can only take the building codes up so far. I'd rather not live in a concrete and construction foam igloo, thanks.

A friend and I had a great day once, getting lost on the roads and coastline of this part of Japan. It's a beautiful place. Anybody know the half life of the contamination?

Caesium 137 has a half life of about 30 years and Strontium 90 has a half life of about 29 years. So there will be significant quantties of both in the environemnt for the next 90 or so years. Uranium 235 has a half life of 700 million years so it will be around effectively forever.

I do not think that is a fair assessment.

Wanting a source that has a vested interest in keeping themselves "reputable" is not a bad thing. Google News isn't news, it is a collection of news articles that are rated by users, disseminated by major news outlets, hit by users, and searched for by users. This helps the algorithm select which news stories are trending, meaning what is hot on the interwebs.

I like to browse it to see what people are paying attention to, and I am often disappointed when it is something like Charlie Sheen, and not a no-fly zone over a shut down nuke plant.

The point is- that today- one has to look around online- rather then merely watch TV or read a newspaper.   With the Internet the world is at our finger tips- so any one of us can probe deeper into a topic and get answers.  Especially when the topic is fast changing and fluid.

I see this with my neighbor- she will phone call and look at papers- where as I will do a search.    My first instinct is to search- hers is to make a call.

The old ways have their place in 2011- but their influence is less.

I think the problem is that you often post stuff from highly unreputable sources. When we hit your links and it takes us to prison planet, I kinda role my eyes, because most of the time he has spun the story in a hyperbolic and unreliable way.

Thre is a report, from the equivalent of the National Enquirer, of Japanese children near Fukushima reporting symptoms of radiation sickness. I tried to find a better source but couldn't so take it with a big grain of salt.

I would rather do that - then the overly sanitized stories.  Once it is over processed it really is not of interest anymore.

There is a quest to control the Internet- and one day it will be just like cable TV.   That will not be a good day for a free exchange of ideas.   Not at all.

Take Huffington Post- not they are owned by AOL.   It is not the same place it was 5 years ago.  And it will slide into the corporate mode.

Dont underestimate the fringe sources-- because they prompt the MSN to be a tad better out of necessity.

-- the nuclear accident is more serious then the MSN lets on.  PP had a link on how gieger counters were going to be outlawed to own in NYC, in 2008, there are alot of things I do not post- because no one here is interested.

There are also things things I post that no one looks at- that other places reported long ago.  So  the corporate formula is anything but cutting edge.

If you want cutting edge you have to look deeper then the corporate echo chamber.

Prison Planet gets dismissed because it exaggerates and lies. How can you trust that?

Just as a point of interest, can you name any source of news which does not spin the story ?

But then maybe spin is a matter of perspective, it appeals to different readerships.

People gravitate to their own tastes, but right at the bottom, under any amount of spin and icing is a story told by all, so when is one person's spin any different from another's as any spin is getting away from the facts and creating something out of what might be in some cases, nothing.

The media exist to qualify their own existence, therefore they will appeal to as many buyers as possible to ensure their continued viability.

DomKen -> RE: Large areas of Japan are contaminated (6/17/2011 8:47:53 AM)

There are reasonably reliable news sources, BBC, Rueters, Al Jazeera and a few newspapers. Prison Planet distorts the news and flat out makes stuff up to fulfill the owner's agenda. This isn't a simple difference in quality but the difference between honesty and dishonesty.

pahunkboy -> RE: Large areas of Japan are contaminated (6/17/2011 8:56:50 AM)

No.

The exact same story could be on  pp- and also on  bbc, and folks here would scoff at the pp story- even when the same story is on  one of your sites.

juliaoceania -> RE: Large areas of Japan are contaminated (6/17/2011 9:05:34 AM)

Alex Jones reports real news, he exaggerates other news, he spins still other news, and he outright prints untruths. He never corrects himself, which leads me to believe that he is intentionally misleading his reader and viewership. He may have good intentions because he is a true believer, but that does not justify what he does, and it makes him not only a kook, but a lying kook.

For example, Rachel Maddow is highly biased in her spin of real events, but she always corrects her mistakes, and at the beginning of her show, not at the end. It does not mean she is less spinny than she is, but it does mean you can rely on her to be factual.

I am sorry you think this, perhaps if you were looking at the positive things happening, you might not believe this to be true.

I think the world is a beautiful place. I love life!

^  No.  A good start is restoring Glass-Steagall.      Nothing has been fixed- we did not get at the root of the problem.  Until the monetary problem is fixed- no other problem is fixable.

I think there maybe much truth to that, but there are many other people who think this besides Alex Jones, and if you use him as a source, expect people to dismiss you.

Almost every time you post a link from Alex Jones, it leads me on a massive wild goose chase to other links, like blogs, etc, and then by the time I find the original source, I find out that the story was completely bogus to begin with...

This has happened all but once...

That is a TERRIBLE track record

Musicmystery -> RE: Large areas of Japan are contaminated (6/17/2011 10:51:33 AM)

Rolling Stone did a feature:

Meet Alex Jones, the Talk Radio Host Behind Charlie Sheen's Crazy Rants

"The most paranoid man in America is trying to overthrow the 'global Stasi Borg state,' one conspiracy theory at a time"

DomKen -> RE: Large areas of Japan are contaminated (6/17/2011 11:09:23 AM)

Remember the completely made up story Jones was pushing about how some food safety law was going to outlaw growing food in people's backyards?

pahunkboy -> RE: Large areas of Japan are contaminated (6/17/2011 11:09:49 AM)

The other thing is on debt-  it can never ever be repaid.  because the interest can not be created to pay it.  the interest itself would have interest on it.   and thus it is not mathematically possible to ever pay it.
