yep that's another good one -- i think my favorite thing about her is her hipwork; she has great articulations and shimmies, but without THROWING it all at you. =p hipwork is another thing i feel is slowly being lost in tribal fusion. =p

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94bNNMBL_FU you may enjoy this drum solo by Aziza as well; i love how much her personality shines through. personality and interacting with the audience are things that cabaret and traditional styles really have held onto; i love that about them. tribal doesn't have those qualities quite as much because that's a dance that just seems to be more for the dancers themselves. but with traditional styles, many dancers are humorous, coquettish, cute, and they really play it up for audiences which is all part of the fun. ^_^

to be fair, polynesian dances and belly dance have similar moves, but they shouldn't be considered the same thing. polynesian dance has a pretty in depth history that's totally separate from belly dance.

[:D] no worries! i can seriously talk about dancing for hours on end. =p so this has been fun! posting a video to the general CM populace would probably make me nervous (belly dancers deal with a lot of crap; i was once followed to my car by three guys and some of my dancerpals overheard them say that they planned to attack me -- we don't dance a particular festival anymore because of events like this), but i might share one if particular people are interested. =p

I've enjoyed talking with you about dance.I don't get out and do it as much as I used to but it's still something I'm passionate inside about. But boy did I do it at one time. Every weekend and sometimes during the weekdays for 6, 7, or more hours at a time. I couldn't get enough of it during my earlier years. Have a good night.

that's so cool ^_^ while there are a lot of male dancers, i haven't really gotten to hang out with any; i'd love to though. ^_^ it's been nice yammering with you, too! always nice to talk to someone who is also a dance maniac. ^_^

Can't say I've ever been inclined to take up belly dancing but I do love to watch it. [:D] My love of dance came out at a Rave event every Saturday and then some for around 2 years and many other avenues prior to that.

Can you explain your attraction to belly dancing? I find most of it too repetitive (although I dont mind some of the vids you posted of Samia since she has her own individual interpretation). Guess I would rather learn to pole dance and super hot lap dance. [sm=pole.gif]

you tend to get more repetition in performances that are geared more towards american audiences, or choreographies by american dancers. americans tend to go for symmetrical performances -- hip bump on the left, followed by an "obligatory" hip bump on the right. do combo 1 leading to the left, then repeat combo 1, leading to the right. traditional or native dancers are generally less repetitive.it's usually a difference of translation across cultures and traditions.

As "out there" as I am I prefer more subtle approaches. Samia is a wonderful example of what I mean. She has beauty, grace, playfulness all being displayed with her expressive dance. The dance in itself is wonderful to watch, combine that with all of that above and it's hard to pass over. that's one of the misconceptions about belly dance and the people who like it/do it -- it's somehow always about sex. pole dancing is fun, but not in the same way belly dance is. watch some videos of tito seif; a male dancer from cairo -- he's got excellent interpretation, and technical skill, and he's often very humorous. but he's male, doesn't generally wear revealing costumes (say like Ozgen, the fairly famous turkish male dancer), and has a really familiar quality to him. he'll do a duet with a female dancer and do the same moves without looking feminine or sexual at all. it totally CAN be sensual or as sexy as you want it to be (and i think one of the failings of tribal style is in trying to remove a lot of that), but that's not ALL it is.

I agree, it's not all about sex. I enjoy the dance in and of itself. I even enjoyed watching the vids of the men dancing. It does take, as with all types of taught dances, technique. I'm impressed with the amount of control they have over their bodies. Dancing is deeper than sex but I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a little excited by Samia and Sadie while watching them perform. Not in a crude way, just appreciative of their beauty and grace.[:D]
