why on earth does he say "polar bears are poor swimmers;" that's totally wrong. =p they can swim for hours at a time. =p polar bears need ice in order to get from place to place because they can drown after swimming 60 miles if there's no where to climb up and take a break. but i'd hardly say a terrestrial creature that can swim 60 miles is a "poor swimmer." =p

i love the leopard seal story at the end. ^_^

Rick Warren: http://www.ted.com/talks/rick_warren_on_a_life_of_purpose.html

sunshinemiss -> RE: TED thread (7/1/2011 6:03:02 AM)

Who is Rick Warren?  Why do I want to watch it?

GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (7/1/2011 6:13:17 AM)

He is the pastor at Saddle back Church.. also wrote a wildly best selling book .

Worth watching.

his views are drasticially different than most televised pastors

sunshinemiss -> RE: TED thread (7/1/2011 6:15:37 AM)

OH thanks sugar.  Hey, I think Tim asked about putting a blurb up.  Is that possible?  (I do after all put the link for the QOTD just for you!)  They have a blurb on the side.  It would make life soooooooo much easier.

*smooch... and now... bed~ (sadly alone.... more's the pity)

Blurb for Pastor Ricks talk:
Pastor Rick Warren, author of The Purpose-Driven Life, reflects on his own crisis of purpose in the wake of his book's wild success. He explains his belief that God's intention is for each of us to use our talents and influence to do good.

AMAZING puppetry!! http://www.ted.com/talks/handpring_puppet_co_the_genius_puppetry_behind_war_horse.html

"Puppets always have to try to be alive," says Adrian Kohler of the Handspring Puppet Company, a gloriously ambitious troupe of human and wooden actors. Beginning with the tale of a hyena's subtle paw, puppeteers Kohler and Basil Jones build to the story of their latest astonishment: the wonderfully life-like Joey, the War Horse, who trots (and gallops) convincingly onto the TED stage.

VERY entertaining talk!.. the Mola Mola:  http://www.ted.com/talks/tierney_thys_swims_with_the_giant_sunfish.html

Marine biologist Tierney Thys asks us to step into the water to visit the world of the Mola mola, or giant ocean sunfish. Basking, eating jellyfish and getting massages, this behemoth offers clues to life in the open sea.

(edited for a dropped letter..)

I have found the perfect man:

http://www.ted.com/talks/shea_hembrey_how_i_became_100_artists.html

This fellow has created a project in which he makes art as 100 different artists.  He is charming to listen to, and the work is really mind bogglingly diverse and GOOD!

GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (7/10/2011 4:55:34 PM)

loved that one, Sunny!  Sent in to my mom...

http://www.ted.com/talks/robert_hammond_building_a_park_in_the_sky.html

New York was planning to tear down the High Line, an abandoned elevated railroad in Manhattan, when Robert Hammond and a few friends suggested: Why not make it a park? He shares how it happened in this tale of local cultural activism.

For the Flowery types here: http://www.ted.com/talks/jonathan_drori_the_beautiful_tricks_of_flowers.html

"In this visually dazzling talk, Jonathan Drori shows the extraordinary ways flowering plants -- over a quarter million species -- have evolved to attract insects to spread their pollen: growing 'landing-strips' to guide the insects in, shining in ultraviolet, building elaborate traps, and even mimicking other insects in heat."

Jamil Abu-Wardeh: The Axis of Evil Middle East Comedy Tour

Jamil Abu-Wardeh jump-started the comedy scene in the Arab world by founding the Axis of Evil Middle East Comedy Tour, which brings standup comedians to laughing audiences all over the region. He's found that, by respecting the "three B's" (blue material, beliefs and "bolitics"), the Axis of Evil comics find plenty of cross-border laughs.

LadyRedRose -> RE: TED thread (7/21/2011 1:22:23 PM)
