GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (7/29/2011 6:02:56 AM)

Another AWESOME talk from TED: http://www.ted.com/talks/a_robot_that_flies_like_a_bird.html

"Plenty of robots can fly -- but none can fly like a real bird. That is, until Markus Fischer and his team at Festo built SmartBird, a large, lightweight robot, modeled on a seagull, that flies by flapping its wings. A soaring demo fresh from TEDGlobal 2011.

http://www.ted.com/talks/thandie_newton_embracing_otherness_embracing_myself.html

Actor Thandie Newton tells the story of finding her "otherness" -- first, as a child growing up in two distinct cultures, and then as an actor playing with many different selves. A warm, wise talk, fresh from stage at TEDGlobal 2011.

Bohemian Rhapsody (on a ukelele!!!)
Jake Shimabukuro strums monster sounds out of the tiny Hawaiian ukulele, as he plays a cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." A sensational performance from TED2010 -- it'll send shivers down your spine.

http://www.ted.com/talks/aaron_huey.html

Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people -- appalling, and largely ignored -- compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson in this bold, courageous talk from TEDxDU.

what happens to our social media after we die?

http://www.ted.com/talks/adam_ostrow_after_your_final_status_update.html?utm_source=newsletter_weekly_2011-08-03&utm_campaign=newsletter_weekly&utm_medium=email

Many of us have a social media presence -- a virtual personality made up of status updates, tweets and connections, stored in the cloud. Adam Ostrow asks a big question: What happens to that personality after you've died? Could it ... live on?

MasterG2kTR -> TED: Nanotechnology: Cancer Cure & Energy (8/13/2011 7:40:39 AM)

Nanotechnology

In this TED talk it gets a bit diversified but all coherent and related.

The first half talks about how nanotechnology can be used to potentially cure cancer in the near future. This is something that may begin in the next decade!

The second half goes into nanotechnology to help solve energy problems, though that part seems to be only on the horizon at this time. Yet it shows a great deal of potential.

http://www.ted.com/talks/raghava_kk_shake_up_your_story.html?utm_source=newsletter_weekly_2011-09-13&utm_campaign=newsletter_weekly&utm_medium=email

Artist Raghava KK demos his new children's book for iPad with a fun feature: when you shake it, the story -- and your perspective -- changes. In this charming short talk, he invites all of us to shake up our perspective a little bit.

THAT was BRILLIANT! Thanks for spotting that one!

I thought this was a great talk, funny as well.. and INTERESTING! *runs off to check out the googlelabs site*

http://www.ted.com/talks/what_we_learned_from_5_million_books.html?utm_source=newsletter_weekly_2011-09-21&utm_campaign=newsletter_weekly&utm_medium=email

"
Have you played with Google Labs' NGram Viewer? It's an addicting tool that lets you search for words and ideas in a database of 5 million books from across centuries. Erez Lieberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel show us how it works, and a few of the surprising things we can learn from 500 billion words. "

GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (9/28/2011 4:43:50 AM)

Studio Schools

Some kids learn by listening; others learn by doing. Geoff Mulgan gives a short introduction to the Studio School, a new kind of school in the UK where small teams of kids learn by working on projects that are, as Mulgan puts it, "for real."

GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (9/28/2011 4:51:03 AM)

Doodlers, unite!!

Studies show that sketching and doodling improve our comprehension -- and our creative thinking. So why do we still feel embarrassed when we're caught doodling in a meeting? Sunni Brown says: Doodlers, unite! She makes the case for unlocking your brain via pad and pen.

(I KNEW the teachers should have left me alone, in school!! LOL)

GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (10/15/2011 8:41:35 AM)

This is GREAT!!

http://www.ted.com/talks/charles_hazlewood.html?utm_source=newsletter_weekly_2011-10-11&utm_campaign=newsletter_weekly&utm_medium=email

"Conductor Charles Hazlewood talks about the role of trust in musical leadership -- then shows how it works, as he conducts the Scottish Ensemble onstage. He also shares clips from two musical projects: the opera "U-Carmen eKhayelitsha" and the ParaOrchestra."

GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (10/15/2011 8:54:37 AM)

and another! http://www.ted.com/talks/mike_biddle.html?utm_source=newsletter_weekly_2011-10-11&utm_campaign=newsletter_weekly&utm_medium=email

"
Less than 10% of plastic trash is recycled -- compared to almost 90% of metals -- because of the massively complicated problem of finding and sorting the different kinds. Frustrated by this waste, Mike Biddle has developed a cheap and incredibly energy efficient plant that can, and does, recycle any kind of plastic."

GreedyTop -> RE: TED thread (10/21/2011 6:56:00 AM)

This is a GREAT idea!!

http://www.ted.com/talks/jae_rhim_lee.html

Here's a powerful provocation from artist Jae Rhim Lee. Can we commit our bodies to a cleaner, greener Earth, even after death? Naturally -- using a special burial suit seeded with pollution-gobbling mushrooms. Yes, this just might be the strangest TEDTalk you'll ever see ...
