now...I have no idea how I now managed to stumble into this link...

but some of the reading is hillarious IMO and whilst I do feel for those neighbours I just thought to ask for your views about cat owners, should they be in the same way responsible as dog owners...though of course that varies from country to country....so in the UK dog owners have to clear up the dog mess...meaning, should cat owners have to do the same? And how is it in your country? Do people have to clear up?

Just curious about your views or personal experiences as cat owner or as annoyed neighbour or even experiences if you know a friend or neighbour who was annoyed about neighbours pets.

Theoretically, yes, but the difference between cats and dogs is that dogs are walked on a leash (usually) so that the owner can be standing by with dooty bags for a clean-up, but try to walk a cat on a leash........mine would be rolling around on her back in terror, screaming at the cat gods, clutching at her throat.....she won't even wear a small collar, let alone a leash.

So, cats that go outside are usually roaming loose, and the owners aren't out looking for the aftermath to clean up.

i don't really think cats should be out roaming loose. they can bite just like dogs can, spread disease just like does can, and of course, shit all over your yard and tear up your trash like dogs can. it has always annoyed me that they get a special pass to do this just just because "they're cats." they don't have any more of a need to roam than a dog does, but, as a dog owner, you can't justify letting your dog roam free at night by saying "he's a dog, he needs to roam," you're expected to get a leash on him and take him out, and clean up after him when he's out.

the worst animal attack of my life came from a cat that was out roaming around the apartment we lived in at the time. my mom had bought me a bag of caramels and the cat decided to take it. it bit up my hands and scratched me in the face (i was 5 at the time). my mom whacked it with her purse until it went away, but i ended up getting so sick with something called "cat scratch fever," that i had to have surgery to remove a lymph node that literally EXPLODED from trying to process all the infection in my system.

cats don't need to be out at night, it's some weird cat-owner entitlement. cats don't need to shit in people's yards. cats CAN learn to walk on leashes, i know people who have taught their cats to do so. i know people who have taught rabbits and pet rats to walk on leashes.

Pet rabbits and pet rats are more compliant than cats. As with cats, you do not actually walk the pet, they are simply being kept from dashing off into the distance by the restraining leash. A few cats will follow along happily, but most prefer to meander at their leisure.

Many puppies freak out over leashes in the beginning also.

I keep my cats inside so they are not annoying my neighbors. I dislike neighbor cats who use my yard as a litter box or my porch as a place to leave their scent. I think if the cats are pooping in my yard, and I call the neighbor, he has an obligation to come over and clean up, just as he would if his dog used my lawn.

but most cat owners generally won't see that as an obligation. they'll say "you can't prove it was my cat." and if you can, they'll say "well he was just doing what a cat does, it can't be that much poop." (i know this because i've tried. =p)
you're very right, CaHeaven -- a lot of puppies HATE the idea of leashes in the beginning. they thrash around and go bananas, or try to drag you around the yard. but next time a dog owner gets a pass because "my dog just doesn't like leashes," well yeah, it's not going to happen.

a lot of the things dogs get blamed for, like tearing up garbage, are a neighborhood cat's doing. but everyone's first thought is a dog. it irritates me.

yeah, and the neighbours seem to be keen on digging it out again...to be able to whine...on my final day in the uk my neighbour bitch came near me and said "do you want cat shit in your garden"...I was really close to tell her "its biological."

But luckily my dad gave her with his shoulder movements a very cold shoulder where I was sure that she interpreted it as him telling her "so what" when in reality he was telling her that he can't understand her due to not speaking english

Don't get me wrong, if that is the case then I certainly agree with the neighbour who isn't happy and would not mind to put it away...but at the same time it doesn't hurt to approach that topic at first normally before getting pissy, even more so as I WISHED mine would actually do their business outside, as mine had the habbit to come inside for their litter box and then go outside again

The other neighbour (he was living in the same house than her) was annoyed about my cats due to the birds in his garden...now...my backdoor was open about 17 hours a day...and regularly when I went into the garden to "look for them" they were actually still inside and only went then outside to follow me...as quite frankly cats are nocturnal and prefer to be more active at night than during the day (doesn't mean excluding them from being active during the day, but mine were very lazy during the day).

Over here now, thankfully, they finally learned to use our garden instead, so no more fuss about the litterbox, and I do hope they mainly remain in our garden to do so...

So I do empathise with neighours who are annoyed, but I also do know how some do make false judgements due to jumping into hasty conclusions...

In that article I liked it actually that they named cats as free spirits (I think was the terminology)....

Personally, I think that if the poop happened in the garden, HEY! Free fertilizer, eh?
Then, find something more important and life-boggling to bitch about than a little unsolicited poop in your garden, where there should probably be poop in the first place so your plants will grow taller.

I have an indoor cat who runs out every blue moon, but always comes in to use his litter box. Cats pooping outside was not a concern for me UNTIL my neighbor upstairs amassed a clowder of cats of various ages, sizes, sex, etc. Some of the cats were pregnant and were dropping litters every few months. My front yard became their litter box. OH HELL NO!...The landlord ended up paying big bucks to get all the cats and kittens picked up and the yard treated for feces and FLEAS.

Have a heart trap, and catnip. Call the animal control officer. If your neighbor needs to pay to get his/her animals back, they'll keep them indoors in future.

Just for the record, in case my post gave the wrong idea, I agree with cats not being allowed to roam loose. Mine is a 99% indoor cat....the other 1% she spends out on the 2nd floor deck perching on the railing, pretending she's a buzzard.

since the poo of domestic, meat-eating animals can contain all kinds of terrible parasites and bacteria, it's never advisable to leave it in a food garden. there's something called toxoplasmosis that's common in cat feces that can cause fetal death and birth defects in humans (there's a reason they tell pregnant women to stay away from cat boxes). so no, it's not free fertilizer.
and seriously, nobody takes a cavalier attitude like that with dogs. =p

You make a good point- one or two cats is not a problem, a galaxy of them would be.

A cat will bury its poop- this so the enemy cant find the cat.

I am a full believer of keeping cats indoors - it's safer for the cat and it doesn't hassle neighbors. Cats are as domestic as dogs, and we don't leave our dogs out to roam around, do we?

I read somewhere that an outdoor cat has half the lifespan as an indoor cat.

I constantly hear (at work, and elsewhere) about people who are pissed off about cats pooping in their yards, and they talk about poisoning them, to stop the problem and teach the owners a lesson. I don't know if outdoor cat owners realize that people are plotting to kill their cats...maybe they'd think differently, eh?

My little guy never goes outside, unless I take him to the patio. He's getting harness-leash trained so I can trust him out there without holding him. He is an indoor only cat.

Yes, I know that they are a thread in that respect with e.g. regards to pregnant women, but (to be honest) never thought about it in regards of when they do their business outside...
