So yes, it's really happening, and it's more than just an annoying little poop pile from time to time.

I think the only time I have felt really threatened by an animal on my property was a feral tom cat that literally chased me out of the barn, and one of the roosters we had.... Although there was a white tail buck that gave me quite an attitude during rut two years ago. The biggest concerns I've had for my dogs have been other dogs running loose. It was more of a problem when we first moved there. Most recently we had a neighbour move in down the road that was not containing his dog (a smallish Australian herding dog). It came to visit. One of my dogs (a shepherd collie rescue that was quite odd and skittish) felt it was a threat to her happy home and wanted to tear into it. After the third visit in a week I grabbed it and tossed it in the truck to take it back home. I had to inform the owners that they needed to keep it home or it was going to get hurt. They just looked at me blankly and said something to the effect that, because they were now living in the country they didn't think it was a problem to let their dog run and get some exercise. I informed them that we have neighbours that will shoot stray dogs that bother their livestock and since their dog was a herding dog........ They were mortified. Then I informed them that if their dog continued to come to my yard, and if it got into a fight with my dogs, I might well dispose of it also. I haven't seen it since. It is pathetic that people just don't GET IT!

WOW! I just read this passing thru the thread...I shouldn't have posted after a 15 hour road trip and no sleep! What I meant to say in we have hawks, eagles and buzzards here in the city! And indoor cats are healthier and happier than ferals....they live long, healthy pampered lives, while the average life expectancy of a feral cat is about 4 years. My 3 "ferals" are well fed, but I can't get them to a vet becuse they won't let me put the habeus grabbus on them. Toby is the only one that I can actually pick up, he's a total lover, and I'd love to find a home for him! (Anyone interested?) Sissy would be fine once she got used to anyone who took her in. Unfortunately, Little mama is totally feral, so taking her in is out of the question. She tolerates my presence only because she can't operate the flip top lids on the cat food cans. MDA, that is a great place for your kittehs! I'd love to build something like that for mine, but I live on the second floor. I've thought about making a small one for them to go out, I'd have to take them to it, but I know they'd love it. And here in Jacksonville, for what it's worth, you have to license your cat just as you do a dog. I got ther shots and all, but didn't send the license thing in.....arrest me.....but I don't let mine out. Better safe than heartbroken! edited cuz apparently I can't type even after 4 hours of sleep!

And yeah, it really pisses me off about the amount of cats that were simply let go around here. I have my 3, but the lady next door is taking care of a colony...not just one or two ferals. She takes them to get them spayed/neutered, the Animal Control place has a trap and release program, but she can't get them all at once, so she gets the occasional litter. I'm getting the two females and Toby done here once I can get them caught. I hope there is a special place in hell for all irresponsible pet owners and those that simply abandon animals. Rat bastards.

How else are they gonna hold owners accountable? I have a friend who insisted her outdoor cat would be fine, since she lived in a cul-de-sac. Then one day driving home, she saw him flattened on the busy road around the corner from her. She didn't want her kids to see him like that, so she called the city to have him removed. They were going to charge $125, since it was her cat. She was appalled. I asked, why? Who else is going to pay for those city services? She ended up tearfully scraping him up herself and tossing him in a dumpster.

Maybe we try to get along with the others on the block--- somehow it works.
