ORIGINAL: Sanity Since releasing oil from the strategic reserve doesnt do us any good long term it was either to buy votes or it was meant to prop up Obamas failing poll numbers. Either way, it was a political move. You know, the sort of thing politicians do best, which is give the economy another short term sugar rush as opposed to what it really needs, immediate and long term access to all kinds of plentiful and affordable energy. Speculators have jack all to do with long term energy, thats justĀ a convenient whipping post for those who are oblivious to how markets really work. If we really want affordable energy (and a favorable economy) we need to construct some more power plants and drill here, there, and everywhere and build more refineries. There are 2 possibilities, First that supply really is short. In this case it is extremely unlikely, even if every even vaguely possible deposit is exploited, that supply will increase enough fast enough to bring prices down. In which case the days of plentiful and cheap energy from fossil fuels is over and the sooner we come to grips with those facts the better. Or the problem really is speculators and/or the oil companies gouging prices for their own profit. In this case putting oil from the strategic reserve into the market will dive down prices as supply will greatly exceed demand and no amount of market manipulation will be able to disguise that. In neither scenario does destroying the environment drilling after every drop of oil make sense.
