When your poll numbers suck like Obama's do, and you are getting ready to run again...then you dump oil into the market to bring it back down. You notice he did not do this in the beginning when he should have.

My understanding is that it was done because OPEC refused to increase production.

OPEC has decided to keep its production output unchanged, defying market expectations for a production increase, which is driving up oil prices suddenly.

Nymex crude is now up nearly 2%, back above $100 a barrel, and Brent crude is up to $118. Both were down ahead of the OPEC news.

A meeting of oil ministers in Vienna broke up unexpectedly without an agreement to raise production. OPEC’s president said some members wanted three months to consider the issue.

Algeria, Angola, Venezuela, Iraq, Iran and Libya refused to consider a production increase, Saudi oil minister Ali Naimi told Dow Jones Newswires. Saudi Arabia already plans to increase production, according to reports yesterday, and it’s possible other OPEC members didn’t feel the need to join them.

Doing anything before this would have been bad policy.

Again, ken, where is the mention of all the grant money that the petroleum industry has given to all the various endowments, including those devoted to the environment?

Just one example, off the top of my head. For these two to find only gloom and doom as they did the authors were either inept or they have a pretty obvious agenda

That should be blatantly apparent, even to a far left ideologue such as yourself

Anybody could, that was a hatchet job.

It was? Could you explain how to put a good light on the disappearance of 4000 km^2 of wetlands? The wetlands that served as a buffer between New Orleans and gulf hurricanes? The same wetlands that provided habitat for a lage number of commercially harvested organisms?

How much grant money do you think it would take to recreate 4000 km^2 of wetlands? Do you honestly think the oil industry has donated anywhere near that much?

So, sanity, you're saying that 4000 square km of wetlands are NOT missing?

The oil companies are busy funding that bunch of Canadians called friends of science.

Thats beside the point, even if there were any truth behind those claims.

Dare to focus, youre all over the place.

Your original point is indefensible as well, the mere act of drilling for oil does not "destroy the environment"

Thats a pretty wild eyed claim. I dont care how many liberal professors say otherwise... there are many examples of extremely low impact (practically no impact) methods of recovery that are fairly widely known.

Dont believe me? Google it.

Sanity, have you ever been in "oil country"? Seriously.

Whether it's the arid areas of Wyoming and Texas or the coastal marches (I've hunted both places around oil wells). The roads, pads for the derriks, pumps, pipelines, incidental small spills, etc cause significant degradation.

You dont build a few hundred miles of gravel roads and pipelines along with a coupla thousand gravel and concrete pads and leave things looking all tidy.

Which the fields youre mentioning were probably opened in the 1800s, and were drilled using 1800s technology, essentially?

Step into the here and now, Hill. We are talking about the present, and thats the same problem with kens argument, he is arguing against the use of old technology.

Today the EPA is all over these guys asses... look at the fines Exxon had to pay to clean up the Valdez disaster. Look at the fines BP is paying.

And ask yourself if you are really willing to deep six the economy, and cause all the hardship that would accompany the abandonment of petroleum fuels.

As liberal newspaper headlines like to scream any time budget cuts are mentioned, with the poor, and women and children being the hardest hit

The fields I'm mentioning were active in the 80's and 90's when I was hunting there and they are still active today. I have friends that work there. That's how I got to go hunt. That degradation I am talking about is totally allowable within the law.

Sorry dude.

Again, "dude"

I didnt write "in use" i wrote "opened" and I brought up the technology used at those sites.

There is low and practically no impact technology widely available, and in use... and I call bullshit on your assertion that the EPA allows the spills you claim. This technology was developed for a reason, and that reason was to get the blessing to use it in more sensitive areas

OK, Sanity, they were opened in the late 60's early 70's.

They were and are using state of the art technology, not 19th century as you surmised. There is still degradation. It's unavoidable.

I mean, c'mon. Coupla thousand oil wells, 19th century tech (that's steam engines). You are REALLY grasping this evening.

Face it, nothing gets extracted from the ground without damage. The key is to minimize the damage and maximize production if possible. I'm not "anti oil" I just think our continued dependence on fossil fuels is the road to ruin for our culture and civilization. Those who point at Gore as a charlatan say "follow the money". I agree. Follow the money.

Gore made a few million. The oil companies make tens of BILLIONS.

They have vested interest in continuing their present business model and maintaining their profits without having to change their infrastructure.

If the gravy train ends in 50 years, who gives a shit? The directors and stockholders will all be dead and gone by then and fuck the grandkids. Let them figure it out.

Remember the catch phrase of Wall Street in the 90's "I got Mine"...what is unstated is a hearty "and fuck you and yours"

NOTE: that last quote isn't aimed at any person on these boards.

The statement is true. The Mississippi river delta is 4000 km^2 smaller than it was in 1900. Which is very bad since it should be expanding not shrinking.

It is not beside the point. Even when the oil companies drill cleanly they still destroy the environment where they drill. I will also point out the extreme ecological damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon.

As to your link low impact is not no impact and the energy industry has a long track record of lying about the environmental impact of their practices. For instance the natural gas producers are touting Hydraulic Fracturing which caused a drinking water well in PA to explode.

The U.S. has 3% of the world's oil supply and as a nation we consume more than 20% of the world supply. We could drill every drop of oil within our borders and we will still be dependent on foreign oil. That's a fact of geology, not politics.

Too bad its a deceptive geological "fact". We have 3% of the worlds PROVEN reserves. But we have 20% of the worlds RECOVERABLE reserves.

Total bullshit.

Oil is up despite Obamas weak, bullshit lip service he is paying to the current economy and job killing high energy prices

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=CLQ11.NYM

If he really wanted to bring the cost of energy down he would cut the red tape thats holding domestic oil companies back.

He wants it both ways though...

Can you cite a single new regulation impacting domestic oil companies who want to produce inside the US.

Sanity probably thinks there are tens of thousands of barrels of spent mud sitting in the basement at One Shell Plaza.

If I get time tomorrow or the next day I might hold your hand and walk you back through those threads

Just because Im such a swell guy

I asked for regulations not far right wing made up nonsense. Try to understand the real world and the right wing fantasies fed to you by FNC, drudge etc. are not even close to being the same thing.
