Uniforms are uniformly sharp and pressed. Neat and clean. Very unlike the ordinary jeans and sweats people otherwise wear to relax in. Business suits are also with pressed creases.

Someone dressed that way makes us think they are focused and together whereas if you saw the same person in a tee and jeans you would view them as lazy and without any ambition.

That must be a New York thing... come to SUNNY LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA, where millionaires are routinely walking around in "jeans and sweats"!!! [:D] lol

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Uniforms (6/27/2011 11:01:23 AM)

i don't think i've ever thought of jeans and t-shirts as the clothing of laziness and lack of ambition.
i've watched guys work their asses off in jeans and t-shirts.

Madame4a -> RE: Uniforms (6/27/2011 4:46:20 PM)

It makes me incredibly hot to wear a uniform..and my boy loves it -- but maybe that's because she was in the service at one time.

Uniforms for many are a sign of authority...

it makes for a hot scene... I have three very different uniforms...

ControlImYours -> RE: Uniforms (6/28/2011 2:16:21 PM)

On a strange inverted note, my ex wife and Domme used to enjoy using/abusing me when I was wearing a German uniform, she herself is Polish. I think she enjoyed the idea that the uniform although symbolising power, she had complete control over the wearer.

DesFIP -> RE: Uniforms (6/28/2011 3:05:27 PM)

If you saw pictures of different men, all same height, weight, ethnicity. One in a suit, one in overalls, one in a stained tee and ripped jeans - which would you feel more comfortable taking a mortgage from? Which would you identify as an organic farmer? And which would you assume was working as a stock boy at the local supermarket? Basing it on nothing but clothing, with all other factors being equal.

Because people do these kinds of tests all the time, and it comes down to the fact that we judge people on first appearances. And what we see first is clothing choice.

With that said, I remember a housekeeper we had years ago who took one look at me when I was going shopping and said "You're not rich enough to dress that badly".

DecadentDesire -> RE: Uniforms (6/28/2011 3:46:20 PM)

Depends on the context. Uniforms can represent many things.

For example, organizations use uniforms as a way to promote themselves as a well oiled, fluid, singular machine.

Another context would be to help foster feelings of brotherhood or sisterhood between it's members.

In a D/S relationship, an uniform can by a symbol of conformity which is an underlying tone of submission.

And, of course, if you mean uniforms in terms of a french maid or cat girl outfit....well....that can have an entirely different context and purpose then what's listed above...

~fast reply~

I was in NYC a couple weeks ago and pulled up next to a motorcycle cop. He had these very sexy high leather regulation boots on...all glossy shine and snug. Two thoughts ran through my mind....1) I'll take 2 to go. (hey, it was my birthday!) and 2) I want a pair of those boots!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Uniforms (6/28/2011 6:38:23 PM)

gaaah those boots are pretty spicy. =p

Actually even Los Angelinos wear corporate uniform when in a corporate environment, unless whenever I attended meetings there the dressed up just for me... Flattering thought, but I don't think I'm all that special...

MsKittyValentine -> RE: Uniforms (6/29/2011 8:11:51 AM)

I am not turned on by men in uniforms nor do I like wearing them myself.

I equate uniforms with conformity. I don't find them sexy and the power which is associated with uniforms is not one that appeals to me.

I don't see men in suits as wearing a uniform in quite the same way as the armed forces or police. Suits are not just associated with work and so can be a social thing and maybe by some worn for pleasure not just to fit in with prevailing norms.

I'm the exact opposite, uniforms are HOT for me on all sorts of levels.   Be it the one who is supposed to be in control and uses that control in a non-vanilla way (police, military, etc.)   or one who is declared to NOT be in control and that lack of control is used in a non-vanilla way (school girl, school boy, prisoner, etc.)

I love uniforms.

Each industry/company sets their own "environment"... sometimes it's "corporate", sometimes it's not.  I've been to many dot-coms in Silicon Valley, production companies in Hollywood, and other businesses near Santa Monica (which is near the beach) where daily attire is jeans and t-shirts.   Heck, I went into one company just a few months ago where the employees were allowed to bring their DOGS into the office with them?!!  Thus, such a casual environment (with regard to attire) is not as unique as you might think.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Uniforms (6/29/2011 3:57:53 PM)

dot coms all over the world tend to be more relaxed and casual, and yes, even in Europe there are places where you can bring your dogs, mainly gaming industry on the techie level, if you're dealing with Microsoft on the EMEA level, you bet you encounter suits, in Redmond just as much as in San Diego or in Los Angeles. Same with the music industry, on the artist level and the people surrounding them there will be no suits, when it comes to contracts and endorsement deals, you'll have suits. So far the most relaxed company worldwide seems to be Google, where you stick out like a sore thumb if you do actually wear a suit, though I am willing to bet if you're meeting on a level where corporate lawyers are present, you will encounter suits.

Sure, and in truth, I don't believe we're in disagreement on this.  I would also add what you've addressed above is a matter of appropriateness -- i.e., while one may wear jeans and t-shirts on a daily basis, they'd know it'd be inappropriate to show up to a funeral dressed that way.

Recall my initial post that you'd responded to, which stated in part:

That is factually correct.  And note, I stated "walking around"... there wasn't even a reference to "at work", "at the office", "in a corporate meeting", etc.  I do think, however, that here in the U.S., the West Coast tends to be less formal in attire than the East Coast.  I can't comment on Europe... not enough experience there. (shrugs)

What I noticed is that the West Coast has a more relaxed way of dressing, as you said, even in a corporate environment, not informal but a bit more fashion conscious and a tad less strict (open suit jackets, you see polo shirts on occasion, etc.) Europe tends to be a bit more like the East Coast, especially when dealing with clients. Bear in mind I work mainly in PR where things tend to be a bit different as in banking and you dress according to the company you're dealing with. So in a relaxed geek atmosphere like the gaming industry, you don't want to show up in a suit as you'd freak out the guys (they tend to distrust "suits" anyway). It also depends very much what the mission is, for example if you're trying to figure out how things work (or what doesn't in the case of a consulting job), you blend in and try to not get noticed, when you report back to the people who hired you, you look sharp and professional and possibly a tad overdressed, because pretty often the way you look determines how seriously they take you. I absolutely agree with people who say it shouldn't make a difference if you do it in jeans or a suit as it doesn't change the quality of your work, but that's the ideal world and we're dealing with the real world who's not quite ideal and to a degree I understand. It's basically a sign of respect for the company who signs the check and if you want their money, you accept their dress code too. I've made an art out of combining clothes in a way that help to fit into different environments and don't mess with my luggage allowance. Mind you as a woman it's a bit easier and often a scarf, hair put up in a bun or worn open, shoes or a pair of glasses (mine have window glass) makes all the difference.

Not to mention that people in the know will know if the jeans are from walmart at $20 or Lucky at $150. You can see the difference.
As you can tell the difference between a cheap hoodie and a cashmere one.
As any LA millionaire will be happy to tell you. And the maitre d's in the top restaurants also.

XenoMaster -> RE: Uniforms (7/1/2011 4:54:05 PM)

They give you a chance to play with someone else. People adapt to what they are wearing. When I'm playing I'm a different person if I'm wearing a jockstrap then I am if I'm wearing fatigues.

Oh, and in answer to above, I think I'd rather have the elf then the french maid. :)
