...when you realise that da yoof have only heard of Isaac Hayes because he used to be in South Park.
In my day we'd only heard of him because he was in Escape From New York. [8|]

I remember him for the Theme from Shaft

LillyBoPeep -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 8:16:16 AM)

i never saw Escape from New York; i mostly remember Isaac Hayes from all of his ubiquitous Shaft-themed cameos in other shows.

mnottertail -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 8:19:53 AM)

I saw him doing it all....

can you dig it?

You see this cat Shaft is a bad mother--
(Shut your mouth)

Ya got to learn to make sweet love to the ladies, chilluns.

He's great in Truck Turner as well. No idea why that film has a bad rep...

Me too.  I know Isaac Hayes from his music.

mnottertail -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 8:43:02 AM)

I wonder how many people dont know he co-wrote the song Soul Man and Hold on I'm comin' (sam and dave) that was re-bigged in the blues bros?

I remember him mostly for being Rockfords cellmate.

Moonhead -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 8:47:44 AM)

He wrote a lot of stuff at Stax when he was heading the house band, didn't he? I think that was the only reason they let him start making his own records in the first place.

windchymes -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 8:57:08 AM)

Recently, I was trying to describe a telephone book to a 25-yr-old co-worker. She couldn't fathom why people would want to just give their numbers out to be published in a book that anyone could just look in.

Same co-worker, when I mentioned the days where I didn't have an answering machine. (Horrified) "How did you know when someone had called????" Uh, they called back?

"No call waiting!?!? What if you called someone and got a busy signal???" You tried again later?

I was going to tell her about rotary dial, but I was afraid she'd have to be hospitalized. [&:]

Remember charades? Where you started by pantomiming "movie" by pretending you were holding a camera in one hand and making a cranking motion with the other hand? We tried that once, and the young ones didn't know what that meant. They pantomime "movie" by pretending they're holding a dvd, dropping it in a drawer, and pushing a button.

I'm going with the "You know you're getting old" thread title theme......if this is really supposed to be about Isaac Hayes, I beg forgiveness for the horrible threadjack [:)]

Moonhead -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 9:02:03 AM)

Nah, I'm cool with the "getting old" thing. The fact that people fancied talking about Ike instead is cool, though.
(Supposedly the reason he left the $cientologists was because they billed him as "entertainer" not "bad mother*" on that recruiting film...)

I do know who Isaac is really.... he's a sort of American version of Lenny Henry?

Moonhead -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 11:54:26 AM)

You don't know who Brother Ike is is, sweetie.
Get onto Youtube and do some research. Theme From Shaft, Truck Turner, By The Time I Get To Pheonix, Black Moses, and probably everything else it turns up.
This is a man who stuck out an album so proggy it made Themes From Topographic Oceans* sound like Singles Going Steady* and passed it off as soul. A hero, no less. All Hot Buttered Soul was missing was Toyah's other half...

*(ask your dad)

poise -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 12:01:46 PM)

I have fond memories of performing in a dance recital to The Theme From Shaft.
I had no idea back then that the song contained such interesting lyrics as
Who's the black private dick That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
On second thought, maybe the recital was only the instrumantal version.
(They do say memory is the first thing to go, yes?

popularDemand -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 12:01:53 PM)

Ike & Truck Turner?

I know them too, must be old.
