The individual mandate is the cornerstone of this whole bill. Without it, the whole thing crumbles like a house of cards. If the individual mandate gets struck down, but the rest of the bill is allowed to stand (a situation that I think is far-fetched, since I'm under the impression that if one part/clause/aspect of the bill is found unconstitutional then the whole thing has to be thrown out. Maybe someone has insight regarding this?) then the whole system will collapse very quickly. If insurance companies cannot deny someone coverage based on pre-existing conditions, then there is no point in getting insurance in the first place; just wait until you get sick/hurt/injured and then buy the insurance and save yourself the cost of the premium. Of course, insurance cannot work this way since everyone would be taking out claims while putting no premium income into the pot.
