Canada is to me just a version of the United States.
A lot of people think that, but they are mistaken. Canada is not America lite, we are a different people with a very different outlook and mindset. We have different values.

I used to think so AR,  but less so these days.   In some ways what you say might be true- but there has been a sell out and downward slide towards all things American.

Keep in mind tho that America is a big country- that just about anything can be found here- that we are not all Suburbs of New Jersey.

I always get along with people from Canada.   I do tho think you have more red tape there - that it would be harder to function there- and I would never become a homeowner in any other country.    Heck-  I could even pay my house off if I wanted to- but I don't.   (modest place- small town)

Canadians are a gracious people...  but at times- I do think youns are America light.       (G20 riots- Vancouver riot- police state type of ...)

My family used to go camping every summer. My parents loved the wilderness. As beautiful as all of our wild areas were (and are!), they were no more beautiful than Canada's when we went there (1973, maybe?).

I think it was 71. My Dad had recused himself from a huge case  and took the summer off. He decided to avoid the press and intrusions the old fashioned way... We piled into a Winnebago and headed to Alaska via the Canada... we crossed in through Maine and followed the secondary roads all the way across Canada. We even drove up the Al-Can when only the first hundred or so miles were paved. It was hands down, the BEST summer of my life.
And I will always remember Canada fondly cause of that... and of course the weed smoking cops at the dead in hamilton

Your view of Niagara Falls is so much better than ours.

I've not had the opportunity to visit anywhere else, but I really would like to. Vancouver and Nova Scotia especially interest me, as I hear they're really beautiful.

I found Vancouver Island to be quite beautiful and had lived there for several years on my late 20s. What draws a lot of people there is the very moderate winters and the lower part of the Island and lower mainland, they have a rainy season from October to March. One of the pluses is that it's a 90 min ferry crossing to Seattle.  Vancouver is a nice city though I've only travelled through it and haven't seen all it has to offer.

Two things come to mind.

Its a place where a halfbreed is a breed.
Its a place where one man armed with an eagle feather can stop an injustice the powers that be were determined to shove down our throats.

O Canada! Your home on native land.

I think Canada is fantastic because of its diversity as much as it is frustrating to have immigrants that don't speak English well it is important to be a country that is a a sanctuary and new beginning for so many people.  It never ceases to amaze me how different our country is where you go.  And I will never forget the small natural things how the 3 months of summer seem to be the warmest days in the world and what it feels like when you look outside after the first snowfall. Natural beauty never ceases to amaze.

Canada has been my neighbor all my life. With the exception of four years I have been only a twenty to twenty-five minute drive from Canada (and even then I was only about an hour away).

As I young child I watched Canadian television as much as American… The Friendly Giant was my favorite. During the summers we’d go on day trips to African Lion Safari and the wax museums in the Falls. We’d also spend a couple of weeks at my Grandfathers fishing cabin in Georgian Bay. You could only get to the cabin by boat and we’d spend the days catching pike or hiking and the nights cooking s’mores by fire on the beach. There was a store that was also only assessable by boat where I’d buy salt and vinegar potato chips. To this day I still associate the taste of salt and vinegar chips with Canada. Hell, on a clear day you could see the Toronto skyline from a spot in my back yard.

When I turned nineteen me and my friends would go to the Fort Erie strip clubs where they allowed full nudity (the American side only allowed topless) but the real draw of course was the drinking age. Around my parts a trip to Canada on your nineteenth birthday is practically a right of passage. The best part (after the naked chicks) was watching the Canadian guys get ticked off when we drew the girls away from them and toward us by flashing our American money (ahh, the good old days).

Today I like to go to Stratford for the plays (they do a fantastic job up there) and go for a week or so stint every year (I’ll be going in August this year).

What I like about Canada (in no particular order):

It is similar enough to the United States that you can feel comfortable and find your way around easily enough but different enough to make it interesting.

Canadians are cultured enough to have some vinegar on the table when they bring you your fish fry (although, for all I know, that may be a regional thing, not a national one).

Rush

Coffee Crisps

The Canadian border guards are a lot friendlier than the American border guards. I have come to believe that American border guards are under direct orders never to smile.

The beer… but only if you buy it in Canada. Canadian beer sold in the United States is just as watered down as American beer.

What I don’t like about Canada (in no particular order):

There is a streak of bigoted anti-Americanism running through the country born of a national inferiority complex. Don’t believe me? Just say that Canada is just like the United States and watch what happens. They will throw pouty little foot stomping temper tantrums. “We are not like you! We’re different! We’re different!”

Canadians are the most maniacal drivers in the world. You take your life in your hands when you drive the QEW.

Beating baby seals to death. C’mon! I mean, I’m no animal rights wacko by any stretch of the imagination but that is just sick! What’s next? Kitten stomping? Drop kicking puppies? As long as this practice continues, any claims to the moral high ground are moot.

They can’t make chicken wings worth shit. I have never encountered a decent chicken wing in Canada. I do not know why this is.

The Brock Memorial. I don’t care what anyone says… I am convinced that the thing was designed to look like it was flipping us the bird when viewed from our side of the border.

Its a sense of superiority that's behind it. We are simply better and it's annoying to be compared to a country that is such a pale imitation of Canada. In fact the U.S. sucks majorly in so many ways that its really hard to think of any country that wouldn't be insulted to be compared to the U.S.

I guess you'd prefer it if we just napalmed children, that's the great American pass time isn't it?

Well duh! That would pretty much be the intent, given the history.

Yeah... sure they're fine... if you think having a death wish is fine!

I don't know why but there is something about getting behind the wheel of a car that turns Canadians into homicidal/suicidal nutcases.

I will brook no dispute on this!

Canada is a truly lovely country, full of nice people, some of whom are my relatives.

Canada is special to me because it is the Country where my dear dad, much missed, was born. In fact he was born in the Prairies, close to a tiny place called Duff.

So, I am thinking of Canada with much warmth in my heart today. Oh yes, and thank you also for relieving us Brits of the tiresome burden of William and Kate for a while.

And where did we get some of that napalm? Who was the supplier along with other military equipment? Go ahead, do some research... I'll wait.

It must be wonderful being such a superior moral being living in a country that has never comitted a war atrocity, never pushed natives off of their land, never had slavery, never commited any injustices at all.. and where everything is sweetness and light.

Unfortunately, La La Land doesn't exist now, does it?

GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELF YOU ARROGANT, IGNORANT, BIGGOT!

Your post proves my point.

ETA: and learn to take a joke and some good natured ribbing.

I bear you no personal ill will but really now... How are you any different than any other racist bigot who thinks they are superior to others merely because of the circumstances of their birth?

post #31.  I cant believe I just read that.

Post #32, I dont think Canadian drivers are any worse the US drivers.  I am talking the 401 or 403 from Detroit to Toronto.   The road could be better designed...

Its where I was born, I dont need any more reason than that.

You put a smile on my face tj. I've always wondered when I hear about Russians say or others similarly reminisce about their 'once great country.' As for so many...just what the hell was so great about it ? Czarist Russia was poverty or death on a dusty road if you got in their way.

But many believe and I agree, that in some cases one is justified in being proud of a country and for more than just the fact that you were born in it. Canada does reflect greater values than most countries...including the US. And BTW, hasn't Canada now removed all of its military from both Iraq and Afghan. ? They were there based on an idea unlike the US presence...war profits.

Oh yes, Happy Canada Day, I am half Canadian. Does this mean I can have a shot and a beer ?

Shall we make a list ?

Then you have never driven the 400 from North Toronto to Pickering!
