Oh for fuck's sake!

Can you possibly overreact more?

You didn't say ALL, I didn't say ALL, and I never accused you of saying ALL.

What you did say was this:

But I have yet to talk to a soldier that was in it for blood sport.

And I disputed that based on personal experience.

Why yes, I could over react........but I haven't nor will I. I simply refuse to allow you to twist my words to your own delight.

As per MY words that you've chosen to re-create in red......please note the part that says "I have yet to......."

Exactly what part of "I have yet to...." are you going to dispute? Your personal experience? How is YOUR personal experience in ANY WAY related to MY personal experience? Are you someone I know personally, that is hiding behind a computer monitor, neglecting to share the fact that YOUR and MY personal experience is some how interconnected?

Because only if we know some of the same individuals can you possibly find anything to dispute in my statement of "I have yet to......" and your personal experience.

It seems that while Sgt. 1st class Sean Gittens was good enough to risk his life, to ultimately lose his power of speech and use of his legs, for America; he still isn't good enough to live in the Lilly-white subdivision known as Knob Hill. Or should that be "snob hill"?
I find myself wondering how much anybody would care if he wasn't injured in Iraq, if he was just some guy who'd been paralyzed in a car accident?

Well a lot of people have replied in a heated manner, I'm not going to. You asked a question, and based it on an erroneous assumption.

The troops are NOT paid to kill, destroy, and torture. They are paid to do what they are told. They keep the peace in times of domestic disturbance (Oka), they assist in times of natural disaster (Winnipeg floods, Katrina). They defend our interests over seas, they defend key installations such as embassies and oil fields. They build roads, schools, houses, and bridges. They help restore peace in places like Cyprus, Kosovo, and Macedonia, giving the diplomats a chance to try work things out without bloodshed. They build and maintain essential infrastructure (Corps of Engineers and the locks, dikes and levees along the Mississippi). They do all those things and many more. They do what they are told to do, and yes sometimes they are told to go somewhere and fight. And then they will kill and destroy if it's required, but really it is a very small part of what they do.

That's why the troops should be supported, they are the ones risking their bodies, minds, and lives, but they aren't the ones responsible for the killing and destroying. The politicians who sent them there are.

The news source is left-slanted, but they have a point.  It's illegal to discriminates because of the guy's skin color or veterans' status, or his disability.  Pick any one.  He could have a slam dunk lawsuit if he chose.  But he'd have to live among the defendants.

I would personally not move forward with a lawsuit but I applaud the courage of those who do.

In the line of duty protecting and serving? No different than a soldier.

Don't be naive enough to believe there are not those that do.

I've met my share of them.

And I would hope you have read enough of my posts here to know I'm not prone to exaggeration.

Most recently I had the displeasure of meeting a friend's nephew on leave from Iraq who spent the night telling us in graphic detail how much he enjoyed killing Hajis.

I think Arpig did a masterfully job of responding, as did LaT, but I think it worth a few words as well.

rml, you've never served.  That's not a dig, that's a fact.

You have no real idea of the society of the military, especially at the likely level of the individual you say you heard speaking, nor what and where his head was, and why.

First, part of it could well be the masculine "I'm a warrior" ethos that young guys in particular are often prone to, in which bragging and making claims that are ... perhaps ... less than fully accurate or reflective of the facts.  Especially when making such claims or telling such war stories to men not part of the in-group.

Second, I've seen such braggadocio in men who really do not mean it, but are attempting to deal with the pain, fright and morally challenging aspects of some of the things that they have done, had to do, or seen.  It's often a protective assumption of "I don't care ... in fact, I like it" that is less real, and more psychological deflection.

Third, I've no doubt that there are a few soldiers in uniform that may be "blood-thirsty killers" who revel in violence, but - in my experience - such people do not fit in well in a structured, disciplined military environment and are either quickly relieved of their military status, or end up in a military jail or prison.

I think that as a percentage of the population, you have more "blood-thirsty killers" roaming the civil streets of the US than you do in the military.

There's more I could say, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Firm

It`s sad that anyone thinks this way. To even suggest people ( other than the odd nutter) join the forces to torture and kill is sick. God knows I have made enough posts complaining about how the military have acted at times, your post though, is something else. You should be ashamed to have posted it.

I am darn near speechless that this story comes from a place so close to where I called "home" for five years.  (There are several small towns that surround Augusta.)  The area certainly isn't anti-military.  Heck, it's one of the major hubs of the economy.

I seriously hope there is a happy ending on this one.

I don't blame this poor guy and his family for not wanting to live particular Knob Hill Hill Full of Knobs*. Who in their right mind would want to even associate with people who behave so callously?

I wouldn't want to be seen dead with them.

* I don't know if it's the same in the US but here 'knob' is used to refer contemptuously to people who behave like 'pricks' or 'total morons'

It doesn't have the same meaning here for most, but the irony is appreciated by those of us who are acquainted with the expression. [;)]

I was in the USAF and this was my experience - those who reveled in violence were kicked out or ended up in jail.
