I don't even see why you're so ashamed of having criminals there...I mean, you could get sent off to Australia for theft. It's not like you have a bunch of serial murderers. Those went to the gallows.

Besides America got bloodthirsty conquistadors, entrepreneurs looking to make it rich, and super conservative Puritans. And look at us now. Lighting up the Middle East, putting corporate interests above human interests, and protesting against gay marriage and for teaching intelligent design in science classes.

Australians got the better end of that bargain. Seriously.

Don't confuse the term "overweight" with the term "obese." They are not the same thing. I see my share of obese people around but they don't come close to being one third of the population, at least not in my stomping grounds.

Incidently, we are NOT the fattest nation. Yeah, sure, being number three may not be nothing to crow about but still...

WERE NOT NUMBER ONE! WERE NOT NUMBER ONE! [sm=cheering.gif]

That report must be outdated, living in GB, it seems to me that people here are heftier than in the rest of Europe, I'm frequently in other parts of Europe and it seems that people in Britain are just a bit heftier than most European counterparts, I'm not so sure about rural areas but in big cities most definitely.

For example Britain recently started to have a size 6 in the highstreet shops (that would be a US 2) or a Continental 32/34, which most shops on the continent carry (or 36/38 in France and Italy), just like they carry the 2 in the US, however in Britain this is relatively new and possibly while the general trend is to getting bigger (what used to be plus sizes seems to be now available in every shop - which says a bit about what the demand is), the counter trend is some people are even more weight conscious - a bit like in the US where you have the extreme plus sizes and the extreme size 0 trend (which would be a UK 4 due to the different sizes and unless you have the bone structure of Kate Moss or a serious drug habit, rather unrealistic for most adult women).

In NYC there's a lot of sushi and healthy food available, same in London, Munich, Milan, Vienna or Paris, it seems that in most cosmopolitan cities are thinner, or at least more normal sized.

Agreed women in the U.K. are often very fat.

Comprehension problem? PEOPLE (not just women) in the UK tend to have a slightly sturdier build in average, I usually also see quite a lot of men that are heftier than European men from other countries. Part of it might be genetics, part of it might be the diet and a less active life-style. As far as I know there are quite a lot of obese guys in Britain, if you look at the studies, it's not just women that are obese, you see your fair share of moobs.

Not a comprehension problem but a biological one. As a population gets fatter in any country this will always affect women more as biologically they are the fatter sex.
You were talking about dress sizes and yes, some fat men are present in Britain, although far more in the North and Scotland per capita, with the women it's everywhere, although that is part of the oversized large and in charge 'empowered', overfed western woman, the type who constantly read magazines about fat loss tips etc.

Pardon me for forgetting about the clinical hatred you display for women whenever possible, maybe you need a nice Master?

But don't let your prejudices get in the way of facts...

In the UK an estimated 60.8 per cent of adults and 31.1 per cent of children are overweight. According to figures from 2009, almost a quarter of adults (22 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women) in England were classified as obese (BMI 30kg/m² or over).

2% more women than men, I wouldn't say that classifies your statement

as true, it would indeed point out that men and women in the UK are often very fat... Or does your hatred for women go so far that you will call an obese woman fat but an obese man only "portly"?

Termyn8or -> RE: Why is Australia so Athletic? and the U.S. so bad per capita? (7/6/2011 7:43:50 AM)

OK, I had to do it that way because of a lil PC error which has made my favorite graphics program unavailable at the moment.

But that's from wiki. They might not be gospel, but someone would ream them a new asshole if they put out something like this that was flat out wrong.

I was here in 1976, which was when the trend began, at least according to the chart. What changed ? I can't put my finger on it, and as such I don't think it was some shift that suddenly happened in people's eating habits. If that happened I wouldn't know, but it may have been some food additive or something approved around that time.

Research later. I have to go do something that APPARENTLY nobody else can do. Damn.

ETA : Phil, yup, that's the US, and now old are those who were born in 1976 ? But then the chart does not include those born in 1976, it starts with people born in 1970. But, the number of people overweight but not obese seems to have remained steady. More later.

T^T

Biologically women carry an extra layer of fat. 2% when you are dealing with sixty million people is 1.2 million more fat women.

So no real response then, based on anything but rhetoric.

in the words of peter griffin "men aren't fat, only fat women are fat." =p

philslave, certainly you realize your own posts are about as chock full of (negative) gender-specific rhetoric as it gets?

(i'm always amazed at how irony is often so lost on those who commit it. =p)

Oh pardon me again, you claimed to be a scientist (I guess you got your degrees from the same place where the imaginary girlfriend comes from) and so I assumed wrongly that you would be able to understand the concept of obesity, but instead you wiggly and try to distract. Yes, women carry more body fat naturally (duh, well spotted, they need it to be able to give birth), that doesn't make them obese. It's 2% more obese women than men in this country, so that also makes a lot of fat guys. I guess you are one of them and that's why you have to bitch about women so much.

I think MarcB said it quite well here: http://www.collarchat.com/m_3754628/mpage_2/tm.htm

You couldn't be easier to spot if you'd be waving a flag. I guess not being accepted by one of the dommes, femdom couples, switch women or the poly households you wanted to join made you even more bitter than usual. Poor diddums...

PE is mandatory in the US as well. Not sure where you are going with this. I also know many who play weekend quarterbacks, and not from the recliner.

Pure statistics often don't take into account anything past the norm making any data coming from them fallible.

Like women who are very short with big busts often are above the BWI while being perfectly fit, because boobs are not taken into account.
Or women who truly are just big boned, and perfectly proportionate within that.
Do your statistics take into account pregnant women, or just lob them in with the obese cause ya know, they've got a few extra pounds on them?

Unless the whole education system in Australia has dramatically changed, PE was very much a mandatory part of the education system in Australia.

We got a few Antipodeans here, maybe they could chime in? Sports and physical education no longer mandatory in schools? Would surprise me because people from the land of Oz tended to take it very seriously...

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Why is Australia so Athletic? and the U.S. so bad per capita? (7/6/2011 11:53:07 AM)

Life for the young is very different than when I was growing up. Dad and I were doing yard work the other day, a beautiful sunny weekend day, and there were NO CHILDREN PLAYING OUTSIDE. I commented on how life had changed, and he pointed out that we hadn't any video games or the like, and everything is ORGANIZED now. Very true. If we wanted to play baseball, someone had a glove, someone had a bat, someone had a ball, and we had a game! No need for play dates, coaches, fields, ANY of that. We all rode bikes everywhere, roller skated, PLAYED.

Now gym, class, I despised utterly! I've never seen the point of games, and the competition baffled me.

But Phil mentioned Olympic athletes. Really, Phil? You're using that as a comparison? Then shouldn't Russia and eastern Europe be the most fit countries? We don't have huge Olympic teams because training is ALL privately funded. A young person with talent might get a scholarship to university, but it's the rare one who has parents with the wherewithal or the desire to sacrifice everything in order for their child to be a top athlete of Olympic level.
