Wouldn't shock me... it's a place where people still die of starvation and they basically scored a truly massive percentage of the technical service related jobs that used to be done by US workers.

Very limited social programs. "must be nice"? Its no coincidence. You cant give away your cake and eat it too.

This had nothing to do with the presence or absence of social programs.

Enjoy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_external_debt

You can click on the little thingys to rearrange the list by the various fields either ascending of descending.

Interesting to see the number of countries receiving foreign aid that are well down on the list of what they owe anyone. Mexico especially.

If I were British I would be worried about their place however. I happen to know fully 70 some percent of their external debt is short term (i.e. less then a year in term) , a modest raise in interest rates woudl be lethal. The US has about 22% in short term loans, or so it is alleged.

Ireland and Luxemburg top the list as to debt/percentage of GDP, I don't know how any Luxemburg resident plans to pay off his 3.7 million some USD share of it.

Donations? Maybe we could fix him up with a couple of loans instead. That'll help him fit in better when he gets there...

Being debt free most certainly does.

Those are listings of Gross Debt and very misleading, unless you think that what those countries are owed will be forgiven. Net debt is far more relevant if the country doesnt have a track record of waiving debt.

Asia will inherit everything within 40 years. The US will have had an empire for a very short amount of time.

I thought you guys had been quite careful not to call it an empire?

Apparently Marie Antoinette "Let them eat cake"( or so it's commonly attributed) thought so too.
Look where it got her.

That isn't even her best line, sadly.
One of her maids told her that the peasants were revolting. Marie Antoinette's reply? "Don't worry, dear: you'll soon get used to how revolting they are."

I thought you guys had been quite careful not to call it an empire?

Ron Suskind, quoting an unnamed Bush aide (later identified as Karl Rove) in a New York Times Magazine article:

The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." ... "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
