IrishThorns -> Spam Filter (7/5/2011 10:04:44 PM)

Does anyone know what triggers the Spam Filter or how long it lasts? I'm not looking for links to the FAQ (already been there), but numbers ad quantifiable data.

LadyPact -> RE: Spam Filter (7/5/2011 10:24:30 PM)

As I understand it, one of the reasons the spam filter works so well against mass mailings, cut/paste messages, etc is because the guests of the site don't know the exact number that triggers the filter.  For example, if it was common knowledge that five messages that all said, "hi, how are you" would restrict out-going mail, it would make it less effective because people would just resort to sending four.  I happen to think that keeping it undetermined is much more clever.  (Oh, I'm sure the Mods know, but it's so much better than they don't tell.)

There have been a lot of updates to this site in the four years that I've been here.  In My opinion, that spam filter is by far the best to help eliminate the ability of folks to send spam to people who didn't want to receive the crap in the first place.

IrishThorns -> RE: Spam Filter (7/5/2011 10:41:49 PM)

Hmmm. It takes 5 minutes (maybe) to set up a new Hotmail and CollarMe account, so this seems effective only at blocking people concerned with keeping their accounts active. Once you shut off an account, if I recall correctly, after 2 days the name is available again. So I contend that knowing the spam filters settings does nothing for its effectiveness, as it only stops the honest anyways; people who would actually abide by the numbers, if known.

myotherself -> RE: Spam Filter (7/5/2011 10:45:59 PM)

In addition to what LadyP said, there is a button on the received mail message that says "Report as spam and delete".

So when people get stuff that is clearly generic cut-and-paste drivel or the lazy-ass "hi how r u do u hv msn?" bollocks, we know what to do.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Spam Filter (7/5/2011 10:48:43 PM)

Actually that's not true about the username. I deleted an old account several weeks ago & your statement here made me curious. I just tried to open a new account with that username, all other info different & it said the username was already taken, even though when I searched by that name, it didn't show up at all.

Yes, and the people who send that drivel are generally the same type that will simply create another account once they can send no more. Spam stopped? Nope, same UBE, different name.

Good to know, I had deleted an account before and it gave me 2 day warning when I tried to re-log in with it. Basically said it wasn't really gone for 48 hours, and I could reactivate. Nice to know they lock names forever.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Spam Filter (7/5/2011 10:54:59 PM)

Yes, that person who I used to be here will go down in infamy!!! LOL Unlike Fetlife, when one deletes an account here, their posts on the forum remain. So it would be pretty confusing if they let someone else use it down the road.

Yes.  I often forget that not everyone will be as honest or forthright as they should be.  While some people would get hit by the mail restriction and take into account that they are probably bothering people with their actions, others really just don't care how much they might be annoying others.  It would be nice if everyone were considerate, read profiles, wrote original messages, etc.  I guess we just can't count on everyone to be that polite.

One of the first lessons I ever learned about this is that you are only as good as your name and the reputation associated with it.  Of course, not everybody believes in that and someone who doesn't wouldn't mind just creating name after name, not caring about that or the dozens of people they must be making a nuisance of themselves to in the process.

so we give them a bit of grief and cause them a bit of hassle - seems only fair, if they are being dickheads.

Sure they can open a new account and feed us the same BS all over again, but then they'll trigger the spam filter again, and have to go through the hassle of setting up yet another account.

One would hope that idiots like this would eventually figure out that the best way to behave is to be a bit more grown-up and stop spamming people with their shit, but sadly experience shows that some people are just too stupid to cope with the real world and grown-up behaviour.

I couldn't give a toss if they create a new account - I shall continue to 'delete and report as spam' as long as they continue to behave like a twat.

I guess some people view it like fishing. Why spend all night hand crafting a fly lure and maybe get a bass, when you cast a net far and wide and almost certainly catch something.

From a straight guys perspective, when I look at profiles of the opposite gender in my age range, I have to automatically discount a minimum of 75% of those as some sort of scam. I don't know how those numbers work out for other gender preferences, but if anyone could shed some light on it for me I'd be grateful.

Please, do, I'm not decrying that it shouldn't be done. But it does kind of remind me of an associate I had in the Navy. He'd use the most retarded pick-up lines you could imagine on maybe 50 or 60 girls a week. And take home 5 or 6 of them. He said he 'was just playing the numbers game'. As long as they're successful, reporting them won't make a difference.

myotherself -> RE: Spam Filter (7/5/2011 11:10:35 PM)

Seriously, it makes a difference.

Instead of getting half a dozen pieces of retarded spam in my inbox every day, I now get one or two pieces a week.

Also, I worked with a guy who had the same kind of approach as your friend. He reckoned that if he asked 10 girls to dance in a club, one would say yes. And if he asked 10 girls who danced with him to have sex, one would say yes. He never went home alone.

But what he did do was go home with desperate, lonely women. He got himself a reputation as someone who would fuck anything that said yes, which meant that the more discerning women he really wanted to have a relationship with wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

Some confuse 'quantity' with 'quality'. If you want quantity, then spam. If you want quality, then you're going to have to put in a lot more effort.

The inbox tidbit is good to know, seems like it does work then. Yeah, my friend got the same reputation, luckily he got to move every 3-4 years as he changed commands, and some of those cities are BIG, so he remained nameless in the crowd to most women. As for me, I'd rather craft something elegant and unique, when given something to work with. However, among my age group, profiles seem to be somewhat lacking in inspiration for me to work with, so I end up asking questions. And that seems to have gotten me in some trouble.

What good does it do for a fisherman to through out his lure knowing that the line will be cut?  Even if you get a bite, any woman that *does* respond will see that the spam filter has been activated on the prior name.  That informs the mail recipient that would have written back, that a person is plastering mail to every woman in the area.  Even if you write back the woman who might respond under a different name, the crap mail has already put a bad taste in her mouth from first contact mail.

Even if you keep sending mail to people in your area over and over under different screen names, it isn't that hard to figure out what's happening.  Especially from males with the same method of operation.  Plus, who wants to start anything up with someone who casts a wide net?  Most women know they are worth the well crafted lure and appreciates the male who knows that skill is much better than chance.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Spam Filter (7/5/2011 11:33:07 PM)

I am very selective. And I'm not really looking that hard so if the initial email is one of those wide net ones, I'll just delete it unread. If you don't send me something unique, I won't even bother. This is only one place where I might meet people who interest me. The main place I meet people is out in the wide world of reality.

I agree, the crafted lure approach is more my modus operandi. Part of casting the wide net is some amount of subtlety, because no one wants to meet that guy. Another posters personal testimonial about the amount of crap mail she receives having decreased shows that the system is, in fact, effective. That's what I was asking about. The others were worst case scenarios and hypothetical.

awwww...*blushes* [:D]

I actually met my Master on this site, as well as my (now) best friend and a whole host of other people.

Some I contacted because they sounded interesting, so I sent a tailored message to that effect.

Some contacted me, and said something sweet or interesting about something I'd mentioned on the message boards or in my profile.

One of those was Master. Right from the start I thought to myself he was a nice guy - not pushy, and seemed genuinely interested in ME, not just my 'submissiveness'. We conversed for a while online, and by the time we met in r/l we knew a lot about each other. We met for a 'quick coffee' that took nearly 3 hours in the end, with both of us gabbing nineteen to the dozen [:D]

Had he sent me a generic message or *shudders* a txt-spk spam, I would have deleted the message unread. His little bit of effort resulted in something rather wonderful.
