quote:
ORIGINAL: LaTigresse DG...with people like you around, we all tend to become more than a little calloused about words that used to be a lot more shock worthy. Call me whatever floats your boat. If I don't give you, or the words you use, the power to matter to me in any way, shape, or form........then you are nothing more than pixels on a screen. Kinda like the adults in Charlie Brown. "wha wha wha wha wha whaaa". Obviously you do allow others, and the words they use, the power to affect you. It is foolish to assume everyone is the same. Ah - I see that this was the comment that sparked the fire. I think I see why. La T, this really isn't something I can agree with. Once you've interacted with someone, begun to respect their view even partially, begun to have even a slight recognition as a human then, yes, it becomes progressively more difficult to treat them as mere 'pixels on the screen', from what I've experienced of myself and of nearly all others who use these boards regularly. I *will* feel it if someone with whom I've connected in that way is offensive towards me. If I didn't, what would I be? Re your first sentence - I think I'd be too calloused to care. In fact I'd go as far as to say I'd be less than human if that were to happen. I'm not able to block off the connection between myself and other people that enables this propensity for the words of others to affect me - and, most of the time, I'm glad I'm not able to.
