i always thought being kinky meant admitting to doing the shit our grandmothers didn't admit to.
That reminds me of a story.....

My grandfather died quite young, and my grandmother outlived him by 40 some odd years. To make ends meet, she took in university students as boarders. She had a rule of no boyfriends or girlfriends allowed up in the rooms.

When my cousin was going to university, he stayed at her place, and one evening he came home to find her pacing up and down and fretting about the male boarder who had his girlfriend up in his room and had been up there for about 1/2 an hour. My cousin was just about to go remind the guy about the rule, when they came downstairs with a bottle of champagne and asked my grandmother to drink a toast with them as they had just become engaged.

Well, the toast was drunk and the couple went back upstairs and didn't show their face again all weekend. My cousin half jokingly confronted my grandmother about her apparent hypocrisy  She smiled at him the way grandmothers do when you're being cute and said:

"You don't buy a book without looking between the covers first."

I can't speak on that since I'm not now and never was "a drunk frat girl who defines herself by how hot she is." I'm speaking of my own experience as an average-looking but very hot sexually 39 year old woman who has taken on more than one man at a time. It was hot and very empowering to see what it did to them. Just because you "fail to see" doesn't make it not so.....luci

When I was a kid (after I had learned to add), I figured out that I was born 7 months after my parents got married.... hmmmm... so being the kinda kid I was, I asked/confronted my mother about... ummm... how that came to be...
she said basically the same thing as your grandmother... what else could she say? [:D]

I kind of see your point.

When I think of sluts, I don't think of what people do in their bedrooms, I think of how they act in public, and their reasons for making the sexual choices they do.

See, how you described yourself, as a "very hot sexually 39 year old woman" - I have no problem with that. It is empowering for you to do what you want sexually, no matter what other people think of it.

I made that point earlier - about how people should call themselves sexually open, or highly sexual, instead of "slut" - because to me slut is just the negative word.

I think the idea of reclaiming the word just doesn't sit well with me. If you take that drunk frat girl type, the one with playboy tattoos who is tagged in pics making out with her friends and simulating sex at parties...that girl's the same, whether she's calling herself a slut or being called a slut by guys. I think for young women especially, the idea of "reclaiming" the word slut is a disaster. They're just turning themselves into sexual objects to amuse guys, they're still getting judged for it, the only difference is they've deluded themselves into thinking it's in their best interest.

I don't believe that reclaiming words like that has much social effect on acceptance. And I guess more to the point, I have a problem with accepting that sort of culture for young women. Nobody respects them for being sluts. They just have more friends on facebook.

slaveluci -> RE: Meaning of the word "slut" (7/8/2011 8:07:16 PM)

Yeah, you make good points. It's funny because as sexually free as I am in private, I am the anti-slut in public. It's not that I'm hypocritical about it, it's just that I'm not the typical hot-looking "slut" people have pictured when someone is that sexually liberated. I am not ugly but I am but average and a big girl at that. To top it all off, I am a librarian. I often chuckle to myself at the difference between how I feel/am and what I must look like to others. So not the typical "slut" type but oh so much so in my private life...lol...

Usage technically defines the meaning of words, not the dictionary, which records the widest meanings, in usage, of a given word.

Most words don't change radically in meaning, but pejoratives as a class have been something of a verbal football in the last Hundred years or so, as we emerge from theocratic feudalism, which, being a caste based system, relies heavily on use of pejoratives to maintain caste boundaries.

As such, many pejoratives have no "meaning" per se, i.e., they are not necessarily descriptive - "thief" is a a descriptive pejorative, it refers to a specific transgression of a universal standard of behavior - "slut" can mean a lot of different things, but as a pejorative, it refers to a strictly subjective standard of behavior, and implies, but does not spell out, any specific transgressions of same.

As discussed previously, the last time this came up (like Two weeks ago), etymologically it's a contraction of "slatternly", which simply means sloppy in general, the feminine of slob, and does not specifically imply anything about sexual habits.

I personally lean towards Kalikshama's understanding, and the "ethical slut" as sort of the current "tonal center" of the word as she is used.

MasterMagnus321 -> RE: Meaning of the word "slut" (7/9/2011 11:48:11 AM)

slut:
c.1400, "a dirty, slovenly, or untidy woman," probably cognate with dialectal Ger. Schlutt "slovenly woman," dialectal Swed. slata "idle woman, slut," and Du. slodder "slut," but the ultimate origin is doubtful. Chaucer uses sluttish (late 14c.) in reference to the appearance of an untidy man. Also "a kitchen maid, a drudge" (mid-15c.; hard pieces in a bread loaf from imperfect kneading were called slut's pennies, 18c.). Meaning "woman of loose character, bold hussy" is attested from mid-15c.; playful use of the word, without implication of loose morals, is attested from 1660s.
"Our little girl Susan is a most admirable slut, and pleases us mightily." [Pepys, diary, Feb. 21, 1664]

IrishMist -> RE: Meaning of the word "slut" (7/9/2011 6:13:36 PM)

Fast reply not aimed at anyone in particular

I made my comments earlier and have not bothered to answer any other replies on this thread, mainly because it's a 'lost cause'. We all know what the dictionary definition of the word slut is; and we all know that 99% of the time, when that word is said to another, it is meant in a derogatory way. What most seem to be missing is that for those who the word is aimed at...we really, truly, don't care how another views us. We call ourselves sluts, whores...any name you wish to say to us to describe the fact that we like sex...and we like a lot of sex...with a lot of different people...it does not matter because WE are ok with it.

I like sex. I liked it at 13 years of age...and I like it now.
I like sex with different partners. I liked it at 13, and I like it now.
If I have a different partner every day of the week...so what? I am enjoying myself. The many different partners are enjoying themselves.
If that makes me a slut in the eyes of 'society'...so what? The only person who has to live with MY decisions is ME.

I don't mind the negative connotations that are associated with such words. If it makes someone else feel better to call me such a name, then go for it. Who am I to take away your glory

To me,  a slut means user=friendly.    It doesn't mean she will be a slut with the randowm male whore, however.    M

~FR~

Hah! Great thread.

I'm one of those women who has slut in her profile. My definition fits one of the dictionary ones - a promiscuous woman. Now, the woman part - well, I was born with XX markers in my genes, and so I claim female as my sex. Simple, eh? Not the ONLY definition ofwoman in 2011, but the one usually least debated.
The promiscuous bit (thank you to whomever it was that posted the dictionary definition) that applies to me is - 'casual/random'.
Does that mean I lack discretion? Hell no!! I'm picky as all get out, in fact, and have rarely been considered 'easy'. It means that if I WANT to have sex with you - I will. Casually. Randomly. And I'll enjoy the fuck out of it, in the process. I claim the word to highlight the fact that I don't have a lick of shame in doing so.

K.

HisPhedre -> RE: Meaning of the word "slut" (7/16/2011 10:15:32 AM)

Jumping in very late here to add my $0.02.

I agree with many of the posters who stated that slut as it applies to them is not a pejorative. They are taking it to themselves as described in the book "Ethical Slut". I just bought the book for the first time, 6 moths ago.

For me personally, I enjoy hearing the word "slut" being applied to me as long as the person using it to me is My Lord. I am his slut and no one else's. It's something that he and I enjoy saying.

Now with that being said, I have an ongoing contest with my Mom (of all people!) trading pejorative names/titles back and forth.

Me: Bitch
Her: Tramp
Me: Slut
Her: Hussy

and so on, until we can't think of something or someone repeats one. We find it amusing as all hell to see if we can stump each other. The titles get longer and longer as the contest goes on. Such as "lady of questionable morals" and so on. (I just remembered the "Urban Dictionary", I will win a couple next time.[:D]

The person who is the recipient of the word/name/title will determine how a word/name/title is defined for them. It will become a personal definition for them. It may not be the most widely accepted or common definition for the world at large, but's it's their definition to be used by them as they see fit for themselves and the relationship they have.

Again, my $0.02 and personal opinion.
