Oops, nevermind. I was complimenting you on being able to get one sentence out without "fuck" in it. Then I re-read. [:-]

I'm trying to work out what the word slut means.

Since you have access to dictionaries, I assume you're looking for the definitions of the word in the opinions of other CollarMe members.
I use it primarily either in the "promiscuous" sense or the "hot, sexual, and delicious" sense. It's generally very clear which meaning I'm using, in context.

DG...with people like you around, we all tend to become more than a little calloused about words that used to be a lot more shock worthy.

Call me whatever floats your boat. If I don't give you, or the words you use, the power to matter to me in any way, shape, or form........then you are nothing more than pixels on a screen. Kinda like the adults in Charlie Brown. "wha wha wha wha wha whaaa".

Obviously you do allow others, and the words they use, the power to affect you. It is foolish to assume everyone is the same.

I do, However, I imagine the people out here are too dense to understand the meaning of words or think words possess an entirely different meaning than their actual definition.

People should be affected by words. it is our language whether written or spoken. It is stupid and short sighted to suggest otherwise. The people that are chiming in as if they have no impact are being thick. I have seen far too many of you affected by the words from complete strangers to indulge you any further in this charade.

People are routinely affected by they words they read and hear. It's really stupid to suggest otherwise.

So are you saying we are to take your words at face value and really believe you are an irredeemable fucktard......or in the light of humour as I have always done?

You see, however you INTEND your words to come across...........I and only I, have always controlled how they affect me. You may intend them to be completely derogatory and nasty but I have always read them as the rantings of a failed stand up comic. Usually humorous, even if often over the line of what I would put up with in my daily life.

Earlier this week a homeless person under the influence of something, walked/staggered off the sidewalk into the street in front of me. I nearly hit him. He let forth a stream of profanity cursing me, my lineage, and a few other interesting things. I can promise I did not take those words to heart. The only effect they had was in showing his own issues. I suppose I could have ALLOWED him to make me feel bad but..........why?

I cannot control the intent......or how anyone using any particular word feels about that word. I can control how it affects me.

Am I to believe I AM a goddess extraordinaire and jump up and down screaming "Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" just because some dweeb writes me that I am on the other side? I think not. No more than I am going to be bothered that some dweeb on this side calls me a cunt.

I know myself better than either of the above dweebs......so their words are just 'Wha wha wha wha whaaaaaaaaa"

DesFIP -> RE: Meaning of the word "slut" (7/8/2011 5:49:48 AM)

I am totally fascinated that people are just now saying that no one should use the word slut in a sex positive meaning when it has had that meaning for nearly 15 years. Language changes. This word is an example of that. It changed 15 years ago with the publication of The Ethical Slut. Plus the subsequent theater production of it.

Why DG gets off on flogging a dead horse is beyond me. But hey, YKINMK.

domiguy -> RE: Meaning of the word "slut" (7/8/2011 7:25:14 AM)

All I am saying is that words have meanings. It is the routine out here to try and create meaning or substance out of something that doesn't exist. Words like community, submission, dominance and slut, as well as so many others, routinely are given the bdsm treatment.

LaT way to go in ignoring the words of a homeless man. Wasn't Jesus a homeless man under the influence of something?

Fuck off. I love using absolutes, in that they are always wrong. Go, whores, Go!

Saying words have meanings is quite different than saying words will always affect a person. Context and the individuals using the words have a far greater impact than the actual words themselves.

As far as meanings........language is an ever changing, and fluid thing. If it wasn't, a dictionary from 50 years ago would be sufficient and never need updating. Everyone would understand legalese and the bible would have no thee or thou in it.

I hate the word with a passion - but it is useful as a filter.... I see "slut" in a sub's profile (or esp screen name), I've read enough and head for the 'X' in the top right corner.

I mostly agree with this. I wouldn't say that I hate the word with a passion. I don't hate things as a general rule. But when I see a profile loaded with "bitch", "cunt", "slut", etc. then I know this is not a match for me.

Those words, and others like them, all indicate to me a stronger focus on sex than relationship with unspecified quantities of degradation thrown in. I see the use of such words (in public profiles, not in private) as indicative of a "BDSM-norm mindset" and that is wonderful for a lot of people (say... people frequenting a BDSM web site) but not for me.

Except that we've agreed that Slut can and does mean "promiscuous woman", so I'm not sure there's all that much misunderstanding about the meaning of the word?

The next step is to engage in a torrid debate, with much looking-up of online dictionaries, over the definition of promiscuous.

I'm going to stick my neck out, and say that the term is most often used to describe a woman who likes to fuck a lot. It doesn't necesarily imply she'll fuck anything, just that she likes to fuck.

And what the fuck is wrong with that?

So using the word slut is simply a way of saying "I'm a happy, sexually active, horny woman... do you have a problem with that, biatch?"

Now, I doubt you have a problem with women being happy and sexually active, or even "promiscuous", so your problem seems to be one of semantics?

Except that it also means other things, and THAT is the point. It doesn't just mean a promiscuous woman. My daughter is NOT promiscuous, she has had 1 sexual partner period, virgin till the age of 18.

Yet she is most certainly a slut. She is an impudent, impertinent, and flippant girl. And she IS slovenly, you should see her disaster of a room!!

The word has a several current meanings and a multitude of  past meanings that are no longer current, and some newer meanings that are just becoming current. To argue otherwise is to relegate yourself to the ranks of the willfully ignorant.

English is a living language that is constantly evolving and changing, words are being coined and redefined every day...that is its strength, that is its beauty, that is its power and allure. As languages go, English is a slut.

I have to admit that I find it hysterically funny that A FUCKING KINK SITE can spend 11 pages working out whether it's OK to be a slut or not.

Sometimes I seriously wonder what "kinky" means. Does that actually mean, "I'm pretty much the same as everyone else I just think I'm more sexually evolved?"

Dictionaries are records of the ways in which words are used. The way we speak defines their contents, not vice versa. That said, for most people, most of the time, 'slut' is a pejorative term, regardless of whether or not we think it's OK for women to fuck a lot.

Except for one occasion (when one hideous old baggage on the Mistress forum used the word as a term of contempt), I've liked its use when applied to me. But I wouldn't use it to a woman, exactly because of that more widespread, pejorative usage when applied to them (which extends a long way back in history, too). When applied to myself, though *by the right person* the pejorative sense of it only adds to the fun. [;)]
