in schools!!

http://news.yahoo.com/california-lawmakers-pass-bill-teach-gay-history-012938470.html

" A bill to require California public schools to teach the historical accomplishments of gay men and lesbians passed the state Legislature on Tuesday in what supporters call a first for the nation.
Governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, has not said publicly whether he supports the bill, which he has 12 days to sign or veto once it reaches his desk later this month. If he takes no action, the measure would become law automatically.
The bill gained final passage from the state Assembly on a vote of 49-25, without a single Republican supporting it. The measure cleared the state Senate in April...."

Not to rain on the parade........

I have nothing against gay people. But this is about as lame as Black history month. What now we are going to segregate history when we can't segregate ourselves ? What's next, Irish history, People with bad backs history, Camel smoker's history, Toyota driver's history ?

You want to bring people together, how about just HISTORY ? And then those who learn will learn who was gay, who was fat, who drank Pepsi or Coke ?

T^T

Sad thing is when in St Louis black history month was big, the kids did lots of reports etc..... came to tn and there was not a mention of it being black history month. and that is why i think they should celebrate, so these rednecked, inbreed fucks will take their dixie flags and have them feed to their asses!

Wanna bet that we inbred fucks in TN show a lot less overt racism than you cosmopolitan folks in St Louis?

tammystarm -> RE: CA lawmakers pass bill to teach gay history (7/6/2011 8:32:47 AM)

hey im from tn. im just saying..... there are still a ton of back woods communities that still wave there rebel flags and wear there white robes. And yes there is alot less racism from what i can tell in stl than here. But than again, i came from the city of stl back home to the back woods of tn.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: CA lawmakers pass bill to teach gay history (7/6/2011 8:40:46 AM)

when Termy figures out how to get the people who write up history curriculums and text books to include the achievements and history of everyone together, then he can whine about how lame a "history month" or "history unit" is.
personally, i don't believe in "history months," but i see them as necessary, because without them you get "white men came to america and ruled it. the end."

I have to agree with this.

Why does a person's orientation, race, gender, et cetera matter so much? I'm trying to raise my daughter to be blind to these things, and accept people for who and what they are as people, just like my parents raised me. Damned hard when the schools are telling kids that this and that "group" is different from her own.

I don't see this as progress. I see it as a patronizing step backwards. "Look! Gay people can make history, too!"

tammystarm -> RE: CA lawmakers pass bill to teach gay history (7/6/2011 8:42:30 AM)

exactly! im all for the history months, because they are needed until they are found as important in our childrens history books as all the founding fathers, abe lincoln, stuff. PS at least tn is coming around to gay pride!

Maybe I just lucked out with really phenomenal teachers, but I never got that sort of one-sided viewpoint in my history classes.

ArizonaBossMan -> Another reason for school choice (7/6/2011 8:45:55 AM)

The national education association and it's state counterparts long ago were out of the caring for children, educating children business. This is a perfect reason to have real school choice. I can't imagine having kids in public schools in california. At least we have charter schools here in arizona so parents can escape the propaganda mills called public schools. Hell, they were bad when I was in public school back in the 60s and 70s. As a college professor, I see the results today.. not good.

do you know how many times i've argued with people who literally said "do you ever see black people doing anything good? what were they doing while white people were discovering and creating everything?"
people REALLY believe that, because history is already segregated.

like it or not, we are not collectively at a point where we can say "omgz color/orientation/whatever doesn't matter" because it does.

Peddle your blather on your own dime and on your own time. Stop infecting others. Just curious.. what percentage of california teachers send their kids to PRIVATE SCHOOLS? haha. You all know the answer to that. They won't eat in the same room they poop in. That's the answer.

Well, that is sure language that will make for a more unified nation.

Glad to see that slurs against the south are still in style here.

As for the OP, I think it is a good thing.  The more we show the good things any group of people has done to make things better for all of us, the more we realize we are all in this together, not separately.

I am of this opinion as well. However, I also agree with Termy. I think its important that gays and other minorities get recognition in our educational system, it bothers me that a special course or month or unit must be set aside for that purpose. I have a similar love/hate with Pride days and parades. I am bothered by anything which sets gays apart from the rest of the population.

The only difference between me and a straight girl is the genitalia of the people I am sexually attracted to. Whether you are turned on by a Willy or a Wendy seems a pretty shaky basis on which to define a person. I wish it didn't matter if the cock I take up me is made of skin or plastic, but it seems it does to many people. And since it does matter to so many people, then setting aside a little time to point out that certain people who are admirable also happen to be gay seems a sensible thing to do.

tazzygirl -> RE: CA lawmakers pass bill to teach gay history (7/6/2011 8:55:36 AM)

!/3 of CA teachers send their kids to private school.... not enough to impress me.

tammystarm -> RE: CA lawmakers pass bill to teach gay history (7/6/2011 8:57:18 AM)

probably cause like most of us they cant afford to either! and private schools are getting just as bad as public schools. SAD! Ahhhh America when will you ever get out of your diapers and into a car!
