I don't really see hostility to transgendered people here so much as the fact that the many people will be wired to be either heterosexual or homosexual, and not necessarily personally attracted to someone whom they might perceive as having characteristics of both genders.
I am not personally attracted to women, so I would probably not be attracted to a transgendered woman because I would see her as a woman and respect her as such. That doesn't mean we can't be friends, or that I do not support her in her gender identity. It just means I'm not wired to be sexually attracted to women, so we won't be dating.
In fact I meticulously avoid dating pre-transition transgendered women that I am attracted to, the ones that still look masculine enough to trigger my interest. I like pretty boys. It would not be respectful for me to date someone and encourage them to retain their masculinity when what they need is to be supported in their femininity. I can do that as a friend, but not as a partner.
I do think transgendered people are beautiful in their strength of conviction for being who they are inside, but I don't think they are unwelcome here. Not wanting to date someone is not the same thing as disrespecting them.
