Interesting answer, Julia. May I ask you why you wouldn't be interested in someone who was retired?

Not to speak for her but I have read other womens comments when their hubbys retire and many times the guy drives them nuts cuz he is underfoot all the time and micro-managing! [:D]

My above statement was made in the negative and oddly phrased, but if you look at what the word "or" means, it might make more sense.... someone employed or retired is where my interests lie, although I would date another student, also

I read it as she wouldn't get involved with somebody who was not either employed or retired.

Thank you for the translation. I guess it was the comma that threw me off, because I read it that she would not be interested in someone who was not employed & that she wouldn't be interested in someone who was retired. My bad. Going back to school for reading comprehension 101 now.

"...neither employed nor retired" would avoid ambiguity. I think...

i think you might be onto something.

I think I clarified it fine when I said it was not what I meant about three times now[8|]

Moving right along.........

LaTigresse -> RE: Women: Realistic or Gold Diggers? (7/8/2011 8:51:52 PM)

I work and I expect anyone that is living in my home to work also. For various reasons.

My sister has been dealing with her S.O. being unemployed, off and on, for almost a year. To say it has been stressful would be an understatement. My heart goes out to her.

These two are not mutually exclusive. Being in a stable job says something about a person's character. It says they are responsible, it says they are adult, and it speaks to their trustworthiness. On the other hand being unemployed could mean a person is not stable in their life.

I agree, it's kind of a no-brainer. I have never sought a relationship when my finances were not in order. And to a large extent during this single parenting phase, I have largely avoided entanglement out of deference to my kids.
And frankly, I think the notion that someone had to do a study more reflects that people are out of things to do studies on.

realistic.

i think you cut off a very important part of that article. this is what was in place of your ellipses:

75% of women wouldn't marry someone who was unemployed, and 65% wouldn't tie the knot if they themselves were jobless.

This. When my ex was unemployed, the stress level went through the roof in our house. Why start a marriage out that way? I noticed that the article specifically said marrying someone who is unemployed, not would women date someone who is unemployed.

Also, lots of unemployed people are looking for jobs anywhere in the country they can find one. It would kind of suck for a woman or a man with a good job to get married, then have hir unemployed spouse get a good job offer... 1500 miles away.

Not necessarily so LadyP. I'm unemployed more or less by choice. I have my disability pension which allows me to scrape by and I am content to live on that until I find a job I really want. If I never find that job, that will suit me just fine as well. I am loving the freedom and the ability to spend my day doing what I want. I am happier, healthier and far less depressed than I was when working, and my self-esteem is just fine.

Hey .. you told me you hung out at a women's fitness club and had a velvet wand stand "one zap a loonie' is what I though was on your sign.

Sorry, but people get depressed when they aren't employed because it takes away part of the essence of who they are.  They aren't writing novels or planning romantic dates.  They are feeling the effects of losing their jobs and/or job hunting and working on keeping their self-esteem.

I just had to chuckle when I read this. I am right now sitting across the table from my sister who lost her job two years ago and so she...wrote a novel! Just published it last month. :)

Yay for your sister! Tell I say congratulations!!! If you tell me the name of it, I'll buy a copy.

Generalizations amuse me. [:D] Not that I don't do it myownself, don't get me wrong, because surely I must. My friends tell me I'm human so I'm pretty sure I have all those human-type flaws.

That's not work! that's a self-supporting hobby.

Congratulations to your sister!  Though I would point out that she is the exception, not the rule.
