That's great if you're involved with retail on the web. Keep in mind, however, that a good majority of self-employed, business owners don't do retail and have nothing more than a token presence on the web.

I am planning on a blog/site for my clients with tax updates and the like, but that's for the future.

I do want to add that for me "self employed" and "business owner" are essentially the same, the issue os scale is just semantic. Either way, the success or failure is up to the owner.

im finding that less and less true

facebook has 750 million users a great place for any business to be

and treasure lots my clients dont do retail

lets take for example georgia and your a dentist

you could have a site on dentistry with stuff on 5 ways to healthy teeth youtube videos

and be no1 on google for dentist in georgia

mobile is big, my blogs are mobile optimsed so they can be viewed on a mobile/cell phone

opportunities abound

unless the excpected 'audience' is like myself and many of my friends: get a blurb/invite/popup/ etc from a business we are not either interested in or familiar with..

there spammers not businesses pop ups were on there way out in 2000

its like trying to win le mans with a lada or a lambourghini

a lada will get you there eventually

greedy

popups were deemed a good idea in late 90's

but as with eveything they were used the wrong way as well as the right way

when a business uses pop ups im sure they didnt say hey lets not use them because 1 person out of 10,000

didnt like them

its like junk mail today people all over say it doesnt work but i still get it

cold calling doesnt work but we still get it

I work for myself, or own a business. Whichever. There are two of us, though I do the internet thing.

Work when I want, but I always have some work that needs to be done, I still haven't went on vacation in years though I could now, I generally work some amount every day, I work from 2 - 12 hours a day. I work in my shorts or underwear about half the time, I itch my balls occasional. I sometimes watch movies when I should work. I sometimes have to stay up 24 hours to complete something, as I work best working from start to finish. I don't have a boss, I can tell anyone to fuck themselves at anytime, with little consequence.

Business model.
Steps.....
0. Read a bunch of stuff, spend hours and hours looking up information, learn to do some programming language, stick to that language, learn it until you never have to look things up (or rarely), read a bunch more stuff, spend hours and hours looking up information, learn about windows server or apache, learn javascript reasonably well, learn about why webpages get indexed, note gaps when you are surfing, for possible sites to build in neglected areas. Read some more, learn about your database of choice, learn basic security methods, learn some more stuff, read some more, start the list over while doing all the other steps.
1. Build Website with information of interest to some group of people, preferably based on the presumption of information a person looking to buy something would try to find.
2. Google, Yahoo, Bing comes and indexes site with information.
3. People search on Google, Yahoo, Bing.
4. A few percent of the visitors click ads or, marked affiliate links.
5. Google, EPN, CJ pays money.
6. Deposit money in checking account
7. Eat food with money, buy plastic junk with money, watch strippers with money, buy hemorrhoid cream with money, buy flea collars with money.
8. Don't get any credit from partner, or family which treat you like you are unemployed even though you make more than they do now, because the "internet is not a "job"; Go back to step 1, also proceed to step 9 and/or 10 sporadically.

9 If year greater than 2.5 (Start to save to Buy rental property to further diversify income. )
10. Upgrade Server.

There you go.

Do, that for 3 years, and you'll have a good income. Year one you'll be eating ramen noodles probably. Year two you can start having hamburger with an occasional steak, Year three eat what you want, Year Four, don't get lazy!!!

i have a friend here came from nigeria where his dad had business met him doing an it degree and not noodles but he ate beans on toast now 10 yrs later earns 500,000 pounds a year

spends 3 mnths of yr in turkey working with a large client

you have to be motivated

he had 18 rental properties in london then 2 yrs ago sold it and bought dev in manilla

u have to be dedicated

I have had in the past an enterprise of my own, but I have become a retiree. I am unlike you, in that I was enslaved to my business, and thus it is that I am now able at my young age to have leisure as my life. The joy of one's own enterprise is great, it is how a person can know the value of effort and the rewards thereof.

David, it pleases me that you have success and that you derive pleasure from that which you do, this is as it should be. However as that is, your boastfulness here and upon other threads, is unseemly in the extreme. Such an attitude is greatly crass, a boorishness not worthy of one who would present as a role model.

The greater the success of one's efforts, the greater is the humility due, as this success is but granted to you, it is as a reward for diligence, not as a result. Pride and boastfulness of such an extent will displease the Gods, and that which they have granted they will withdraw. Wealth is a measure, not of one's worth, but moreso of the favour shown by one's God or Goddess. It is a gift given, not a thing that is due to you. It has not been earned, but rather granted. Mend this flaw of character and rewards greater still will come to you.

For the last year and a half I've worked for a corporate someone and I have to say it sucks big donkey cock. Spend 10 minutes with Human Resources and I understand why people walk into their work place and start shooting it up.

Previously I would have to back track to about 94 as the last time I wasn't working for myself. Things continue the way they are and I can be back to working for myself next summer.

It is always funny listening to people talk about how they want their own business so they can do whatever they want and not have a boss. The blank looks you get when you explain the number of hours and effort you put into running a business are priceless. Not to mention the complete lack of comprehension when I tell them I have a new boss every time I started a new project. The person writing the check is the boss cause if they aren't happy you get no money.

i can afford to pick and choose whom i work for

at mo i have 3 big clients who pay around 500 per month also lots little clients

and while big ones tend to be local little ones are all over world

and yes i worked lots harder when i was in it

the real boon is the residual

im putting together my own membership site at mo

dunno how much ill charge maybe around $30 about then if i just get 100 members thats a lot

residuals where its at

and doesn't have to be internet businesses have set up membership site for a dentist and a keep fit instructor

its def lot easier these days i love it most my friends moan and gripe about lack opportunities out there but actually think theres more opportunities now than ever

From someone doing the internet startup thing with one primary employee (hi), even though there's some flexibility around working primarily online (location wise) I definitely wouldn't recommend it for anyone wanting a lot of sleep or lazy days. I'm typically working 12-14 hours/day, 7 days/week. I don't have much of a commute, which is great, but the time saved in not getting on a train or jumping in a car is just replaced by working longer or earlier.

It depends on the area and your ambitions though, I guess. I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg wasn't kicking his feet up and going on vacation when Facebook first pulled in $200,000, but for some people that would be the definition of building a successful business.

LOL....sleeping when you want???? Let's see...I put in on average 16 to 18 hours a day, seven days a week. I last had a vacation that lasted more than a week, in 1998. I travel often and can't remember the last time I slept past 8AM...most days I am up at 6, after getting to bed at around 2 AM.

Yes my business is very successful and we've gotten/are getting through this miserable ongoing recession really well...but that is because I put in the hours needed to make us recession-proof - adapting the business constantly, creating new products, managing partnerships with other firms and affiliations, keeping up with constant regulatory changes and tax changes, overseeing projects, handling HR issues, teaching employees, handling all the client contact....etc...etc...etc..

The way I learned it, owning your own business is defined this way.... "working 15 hours a day for yourself over 7 days a week instead of 8 hours over 5 days a week for somebody else".

More truthful words were never uttered...

If you have found a way to do what you are claiming....then my hat is off to you.
