If I call ANYONE on a business matter and do not get a response in what I FEEL is a reasonable amount of time I will not be their customer for long. Bad customer service is one of my pet peeves. Especially if they handle a problem poorly.

bad customer service is not good

but just because there not hanging on the phone waiting for people to ring

i was in sainsburies the other day there was only person on the tills a long queue and 2 people talking and 1 person telling people who could tell that there were free self service tills

the main job of a food retailer is to sell stuff to customers and only 1 out of 4 was doing this

same with answer phones they were invented to take messages

its just diff business methodologies leveraging resources

some do it some prefer not to

thats all

self employed here. Not looking to hire anybody, ever.. Not looking for drama and complication of having an employee.

Well thats simply a very different handling of the issue in the UK or different to how my dad handled it (he managed a big DIY store like the B&Q's in the UK) and in the final years of his employment life he had the rule in his store that if a customer has to wait more than five minutes to be able to pay his/her goods, then they are entitled to 5 Euro IF not all checkouts are being staffed (cause if all are staffed then there is nothing you can do about it, but if they weren't then they could claim it).

That way he made sure that customers as well as his employees get the fact that customer service DOES matter.

In regards to your view not being that important to answer that soon...well....if my ex doesn't answer his customers in a timely manner huge contracts (and potential subsequent business with them) will be lost....it means he loses work out of it and quite frankly if he ruins his company not only would that impact on him and his staff, it further would devalue his company when he will sell it one day to retire...

it simply isn't an "oh so easy just fun" job all the time.

My ex does enjoy his job and of course the fact that he works for himself...but if you employ people it also is a damn huge responsiblity, one I would not want to have

as a customer:

if the phone rings and rings and nobody answers in less than 12 rings (on a good day for me), then that business can say buhbye to me.

as a CSR:

4 rings is the limit... the person in front of me can HEAR the phone ringing. The person calling has no idea that I have someone in front of me.

Guess what the person calling is likely to do?

i would say it has pluses and minuses. for one, its hard to get any work done at home. and it gets boring. but, i think ppl who run their own businesses are usually more talented than ppl who don't so props to them ( and me including) :)
